You can keep a YouTube stream running while a Mac mini’s display is off, but the Mac itself must remain awake. In System Settings > Energy, enable Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off, then configure an encoder with your YouTube stream URL and stream key. “Sleep mode” in this setup means a dark display—not macOS system sleep, which would interrupt local encoding.
Set up the Mac mini to stay awake with its display off
- Connect the Mac mini to power. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Energy and turn on Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off. Apple documents this option for desktop Macs; available settings can vary by Mac. Preventing or delaying sleep may increase power consumption. Apple Support: Set sleep and wake settings for your Mac.
- Set when the display turns off. Go to System Settings > Lock Screen and choose the preferred display-off timing. This controls the display, not whether the computer itself sleeps. Labels and availability may differ by macOS version and Mac model.
- Keep the Mac awake during the broadcast. Do not choose a system-sleep option or otherwise put the Mac mini to sleep while relying on its encoder. The Energy setting keeps the computer awake when its display is off; it does not let an actively encoding Mac stream while in system sleep.
Connect an encoder to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio > Create > Go live to set up the stream in Live Control Room. If the channel has never streamed live, YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. Enable it in advance rather than waiting until the planned start time. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Choose an encoder that runs on the Mac mini, such as OBS, or use a standalone hardware encoder. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video to a digital format for streaming. OBS is listed in YouTube’s encoder directory as open-source software for recording and live streaming at no charge. Check the current OBS and macOS requirements before installing. - In the encoder’s stream settings, enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key shown for the broadcast. These connect the encoder’s output to your YouTube channel. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of public posts and recordings, and replace it through YouTube’s controls if it is exposed.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview and status. Complete any required YouTube Go Live step shown for the selected workflow; confirm that the channel is receiving the intended video and audio before leaving the Mac unattended.
Test before relying on a continuous broadcast
A 24/7 stream is an operating goal, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. Apple and YouTube do not promise that this Mac mini setup will remain online without interruption, and no uptime test or reliability statistic is established here. Test the complete setup in advance and plan for power, network, and encoder interruptions.
- Confirm that the display turns off while the Mac remains awake and the encoder continues sending.
- Verify the stream appears in Live Control Room and that the intended video and audio reach YouTube.
- Check that the Mac’s network connection and power remain available for the intended run.
- If you need a copy of a long broadcast, arrange a separate local recording or archive plan. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not guarantee automatic archiving for a 24-hour broadcast. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Fix sleep, wake, and stream interruptions
- The Mac sleeps when the display goes dark: Recheck System Settings > Energy and confirm Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off is enabled. Verify the display-off timer in System Settings > Lock Screen rather than changing it as though it controlled system sleep.
- The Mac wakes unexpectedly or will not sleep as expected: Apple recommends reviewing sleep settings and background activity. Check sharing services, apps accessing a disk, Spotlight indexing, attached storage or devices, and activity that may wake the Mac. Apple Support: If your Mac doesn’t sleep or wake when expected.
- YouTube stops receiving video: Check that the encoder is still running, its stream settings still contain the correct YouTube server URL and key, and the Mac still has a working network path. These are workflow checks, not a diagnosis that any one cause is responsible.
- You cannot start the first broadcast: If live streaming has not previously been enabled for the channel, allow up to 24 hours for YouTube’s initial enablement process.
- A 24-hour stream is missing from the automatic archive: YouTube’s stated automatic-archive condition is streams under 12 hours. Use a separate recording or archive plan rather than assuming a longer broadcast will be saved automatically.
Mac mini, hardware encoder, or cloud playback?
If the priority is using your Mac mini, the built-in Energy setting and a local encoder are the direct route. YouTube’s encoder directory also identifies alternatives for continuous prerecorded playback; these are alternatives, not requirements for the Mac method.
