Switch programs in the playout or encoder system that sends your audio and video to YouTube—not in YouTube’s broadcast scheduler. Prepare each program as a selectable or scheduled item in that system, keep it connected to the same YouTube stream, and check the outgoing feed before relying on an automatic handoff. The exact controls depend on the software or service you use.
Where the program switch happens
A 24/7 YouTube broadcast has two distinct parts: the YouTube live event and the audio-video feed supplied to it. YouTube supports encoder-based streaming, where software or hardware sends the stream content. The encoder or playout setup is therefore where you select or schedule the radio programs and make the handoff. YouTube’s encoder guide describes an encoder as the component that converts content into a digital format for streaming.
YouTube Studio scheduling helps configure and promote a broadcast event. The YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes broadcasts and their lifecycle states; neither source describes YouTube’s event scheduler as a radio-show playlist or timed program scheduler. Changing the broadcast’s state is not the same as changing the program in its outgoing feed.
Set up program changes in your playout system
- Prepare the programs. Add each show or recording to the playout or encoder system you intend to use. Determine whether it supports manual selection, a timed schedule, or both.
- Configure the YouTube destination. In the chosen encoder, select or enter YouTube as the destination and provide the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s setup guidance then has you start the encoder and, where applicable, go live through Live Control Room. Treat the exact menus as tool-specific rather than assuming they match across applications.
- Plan the handoff. Set the order and intended start times in the system that plays the programs. Check whether it supports the transition you need—for example, a clean cut or an audio fade—and whether a schedule continues unattended. The YouTube materials establish the connection to the encoder, not controls for cueing shows or crossfading audio.
- Preview the outgoing feed. Before depending on a schedule, confirm that the correct program is reaching the encoder output and that the transition behaves as intended. Monitor the live output during handoffs, especially when first configuring an automated sequence.
- Keep the existing broadcast in mind. A change of program in the feed need not mean that the YouTube broadcast itself has been replaced. If you need a separately scheduled YouTube event or a particular watch-page and archive arrangement, plan that separately in YouTube Studio.
Choose a setup that fits continuous radio
YouTube lists OBS as open-source software for recording and live streaming, Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos, and AJA HELO Plus as a standalone hardware encoder. The directory describes the HELO Plus’s PlayToStream function as scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. Those listings identify possible categories of tools; they do not establish that every product offers radio-show scheduling, timed transitions, or a particular level of reliability. Confirm those requirements with the specific product documentation before building your schedule around it.

- Software encoder or local playout: Check whether the application can play multiple programs and schedule their handoffs, and consider who will monitor it and what happens if the computer or connection stops.
- Cloud playout: Check support for timed program changes, monitoring, recovery, and the YouTube watch-page and archive workflow you want.
- Dedicated hardware: Confirm that its playback and scheduling functions match your program format and continuity needs; a hardware encoder is not inherently required just to switch shows.
Compare options on scheduling, operator involvement, continuity through handoffs, monitoring and recovery, cost, and archive workflow. YouTube’s directory does not compare providers on those radio-specific features or costs.
Plan the YouTube broadcast and archive separately
For a scheduled YouTube event, YouTube’s guidance describes setting it up in Studio and starting the encoder when it is time. For first-time live streaming enablement, YouTube notes that activation can take up to 24 hours; that is not a universal delay for starting every stream. YouTube also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If your operation runs continuously, account for that stated duration boundary when deciding how to structure broadcasts and archives; the guidance does not establish archive behavior for streams lasting 12 hours or longer.
