Yes, but the right method depends on what you want to stream. Synology documents a Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature for selected camera feeds; it does not document that feature as a way to loop arbitrary video files. For prerecorded videos, you need a separate encoder running on a compatible NAS, and compatibility and sustained performance depend on the specific NAS, DSM version, and encoder setup.

Choose the method that matches your video source

What you want to stream Possible approach Important limitation
A live camera feed Use Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast feature, if available for your setup. Synology’s version 8 help page describes selecting a camera and stream profile. It says Live Broadcast supports H.264; it does not describe looping stored files. Synology Live Broadcast help
One or more prerecorded videos Run a separate encoder on the NAS, for example through a supported container configuration that reads media from NAS storage and sends a looping stream to YouTube. The available documentation does not establish which NAS models or DSM versions support a particular encoder configuration or can sustain a given resolution and frame rate. Treat this as a model-specific project to test, not a universal Synology feature.

Both methods need an encoder destination and a private YouTube stream key. A NAS can avoid keeping a separate computer on, but it does not remove the need for a working internet connection, a suitably capable NAS, or a plan for interruptions.

Check YouTube eligibility and plan the stream

Confirm the channel can go live

YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16. Check the current requirements for the channel in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility help before configuring the NAS.

Create a stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room to create or select a live stream. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup flow at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key like a password: enter it only in the encoder’s private configuration, do not place it in a public compose file, screenshot, or log, and rotate it if it is exposed.
  3. Use RTMPS if the encoder supports it. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL; see YouTube’s RTMPS guidance. Use the exact ingest URL YouTube provides rather than guessing an endpoint.
  4. Start with an unlisted test stream, verify the preview and stream health in YouTube Studio, and only then switch to the intended audience setting.

Broadcast a camera with Surveillance Station

Synology’s instructions are for a camera source. The exact labels and available controls may differ by Surveillance Station version, camera, and NAS setup; consult the help page applicable to your installation rather than assuming every NAS exposes identical menus.

  1. Install and open Surveillance Station, then confirm that the camera you want to broadcast is configured and available there.
  2. Open Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast feature and create or configure a broadcast, selecting the camera and an available stream profile.
  3. Enter the YouTube RTMP/RTMPS destination and stream key from the Live Control Room. Use RTMPS when the feature and destination configuration support it.
  4. Start broadcasting, then check YouTube Studio’s preview and stream health. Synology states that this Live Broadcast feature supports H.264 video. It is not documented as a playlist or video-file looping function. See Synology’s Live Broadcast instructions.

Loop prerecorded videos from a NAS

For stored media, the broad design is: video files on NAS storage → a NAS-hosted encoder/container that can read and loop those files → YouTube’s ingest URL and key. This is not the same as enabling Surveillance Station Live Broadcast. The available Synology documentation does not validate a specific FFmpeg image, DSM configuration, model list, or continuous encoding recipe, so there is no evidence-backed universal click-by-click setup to give for this branch.

Verify compatibility before committing to 24/7 use

  • Check the exact NAS model, DSM release, and container or package support using current Synology documentation for that hardware and software combination.
  • Confirm that the encoder can access the intended media directory and can loop the desired files or playlist without exposing the stream key.
  • Test the intended resolution and frame rate for an extended period on the actual NAS. Observe sustained CPU load, temperature, memory use, and whether the encoder restarts and reconnects after a failure.
  • Test with an unlisted YouTube stream before public use. Confirm that the video and audio are acceptable and that YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream.

Without those checks, a container starting successfully is not proof that the NAS can encode continuously at the intended quality or recover correctly after a NAS, network, or YouTube interruption.

Set encoder quality and upload capacity

Choose settings for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you will actually send. YouTube’s current encoder recommendations call for constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; do not treat one bitrate as universal. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table for the chosen format.

H.264 video format YouTube-listed minimum bitrate YouTube-listed recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations on its settings page, accessed October 3, 2026—not measurements of a Synology NAS or a guarantee that a particular internet connection will maintain the stream.

YouTube recommends keeping upload capacity 20% above the bitrate used for streaming. Use a stable wired connection where practical, account for other devices’ traffic, and test at the time and location the stream will run. YouTube also warns that network interruptions can break a live stream; see its streaming tips.

Plan for interruptions and YouTube archives

A 24/7 goal does not mean any single YouTube live event can be assumed to remain connected forever. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Plan how you will end and restart stream segments, and how you will handle their archives, rather than relying on an unlimited single event. YouTube’s encoder setup help describes this archive limit.

For a NAS-hosted encoder, decide how you will monitor stream health and recover after an internet outage, router restart, NAS reboot, container crash, or key change. A restart policy can help with a stopped process, but it does not by itself guarantee that YouTube will accept a reconnect or that the full setup will recover without attention. Test the failure and recovery paths, and keep the stream key private when diagnosing problems.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
YouTube receives no video Destination URL, stream key, encoder state, or network reachability. Compare the encoder’s configured destination with the current values in YouTube Live Control Room, re-enter the key privately if needed, and inspect the encoder’s private logs for connection errors.
YouTube preview reports poor stream health or video stutters Insufficient or fluctuating upload capacity, competing network traffic, or settings that exceed the connection’s reliable capacity. Check YouTube stream health, reduce the video bitrate or resolution to a supported setting, and retest with the recommended upload headroom.
Camera broadcast does not start Camera availability, selected profile, stream destination, or unsupported video format. Confirm the camera is available in Surveillance Station, review its selected profile and the broadcast configuration, and keep in mind that Synology documents this feature as H.264.
Prerecorded loop stops after a NAS or container restart Encoder/container startup behavior, media path access, or configuration persistence. Check that the encoder starts automatically, can still read the media directory, and reconnects using the current stream destination. Rehearse the restart before relying on continuous operation.
Stream stops after running for hours Network interruptions, host resource limits, or YouTube’s event/archive handling. Review NAS and encoder logs, test sustained CPU and thermal behavior, and plan event segmentation around YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic archive behavior.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to loop uploaded videos on YouTube rather than broadcast a live camera, StreamNeo is a cloud option that avoids making a Synology NAS—or any computer at home—the always-on encoder. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast from a camera.
