Open the VLC Video source’s properties in OBS, check that the intended videos are in its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Keep the source visible during a test, and confirm VLC is installed with the same architecture as OBS—64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. These checks address the main documented causes without assuming that every “stops on the last frame” problem has the same explanation.
Check the playlist source and loop setting
- Open the correct source. In OBS, select the scene containing the playlist, then open the properties for its VLC Video source. OBS’s media-source documentation distinguishes VLC Video, which supports multiple playlist items, from Media Source, which plays a single file and has its own separate Loop option.
- Verify the actual playlist entries. Make sure the intended video files are listed in the VLC Video source properties and that each file can play. A playlist in the VLC desktop app does not by itself confirm that OBS has the same items configured.
- Enable Loop Playlist. In the VLC Video properties, turn on Loop Playlist. OBS documents this option as enabled by default and says it restarts the source after it runs out of media files. If the source is a single-file Media Source instead, use that source’s separate Loop control.
- Turn Shuffle off while diagnosing. This makes it easier to tell whether OBS advances through the expected items and returns to the start.
Keep the source playing during the test
OBS documents the default VLC Video visibility behavior as Stop when not visible, restart when visible. If a scene hides the source or you switch to another scene, playback may stop and restart when it becomes visible again. That can look like a playlist failure, particularly if you expect it to continue in the background.
- For a controlled test, keep the source visible in the active scene until the playlist finishes.
- If you need playback to continue while the source is hidden, inspect its visibility behavior in the source properties and choose a setting appropriate to your scene. The desired behavior depends on how you use the source.
OBS’s media-source documentation describes the source controls and visibility behavior.
Confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS
VLC Video relies on VLC libraries, so VLC must be installed for the source to be available. OBS specifically says that users running 64-bit OBS need 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video is missing or behaves unexpectedly, check the installed VLC version and architecture as well as OBS’s version and architecture.

Identify where playback stops
“It only plays one file,” “it does not proceed to the next video,” “it stops on the last frame,” and “the loop feature isn’t working” describe different possible symptoms. Note which one you see before changing versions or rebuilding the playlist:
- It does not advance after one file: Check the listed entries and whether the next file is playable.
- It advances through the list but does not start over: Check Loop Playlist and watch whether the final file actually reaches its end.
- It stops after you change scenes or hide the source: Check visibility behavior and test with the source visible.
- It repeats a playlist file rather than playing the intended video items: Record whether the source is using individual videos or playlist files, such as .xspf files, and note how those items are arranged.
What older bug reports can—and cannot—tell you
Historical reports describe particular setups, not a universal current fix. A 2018 OBS forum thread reported a playlist stopping after one file with OBS 21.0.1 64-bit and VLC 3.0.0 64-bit; one participant said VLC 2.2.4 resolved their case. That is an anecdote about old versions, not a general recommendation to downgrade. Check current supported versions and reproduce the issue before considering a version change. Read the forum thread.

A 2022 issue for OBS 27.2.4 on Windows 10 reported that a directory of .xspf playlist files caused one .xspf file to repeat. It was closed as not planned. This records a specific report; it does not establish that directories or .xspf files generally fail. Read the issue.
Consider an alternative playlist source only if it fits your workflow
If you need folder updates or playlist management beyond the VLC source’s behavior, you can evaluate Media Playlist Source. Its update history reports fixes for playlist progression, including when the same video path appears again (also described as affecting looping a single file). Version 0.1.0 and later requires OBS 31, according to that history. Check the current release notes and platform instructions before installing it. These fixes do not guarantee that it will resolve every VLC-source problem; there has been no controlled head-to-head comparison established here.

Gather useful details if it still fails
If the checks do not resolve the problem, collect enough information to distinguish a configuration issue from a version-specific fault:
- OBS version, operating system, and whether OBS is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- VLC version and architecture.
- The playlist file type, if you use one, and whether the source lists individual videos or playlist files.
- The number and paths of the items listed in the source properties.
- What happens at the failure point: whether playback fails to advance to the next item, finishes the entire list without restarting, repeats an unexpected item, or stops when hidden.
- An OBS log covering a controlled test, if you ask for help troubleshooting.
