Before you edit: make sure the livestream archive exists
YouTube can automatically archive a livestream if it is less than 12 hours long. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. If there is no archive in Studio, there is no archived video to edit using the steps below. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
For an archived livestream, a Content ID claim is made after the stream ends if you choose to archive it. This is separate from live copyright scanning, which can interrupt a broadcast while it is in progress. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.
Back up the video before saving an edit
Download a copy of the archive or use Google Takeout before you edit. YouTube says that, since June 2025, changes saved in Studio Editor cannot be undone using Revert to original. Treat each saved edit as permanent in the editor and keep your own copy in case you need the untouched recording.

Open the claim in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, open Content and locate the archived livestream.
- Open the video’s copyright notice, then select View details.
- Find the relevant claim and open Take action.
- Choose the edit that best fits the archive: Replace song, Erase song, mute all sound in the claimed segment, or Trim out segment.
The labels and available options are YouTube Studio’s documented workflow; on-screen wording can change, so follow the options shown for the specific claim. YouTube Help: Remove copyright-claimed content from videos.
Choose the least destructive edit that clears the claim

These are YouTube’s documented options and trade-offs; they are not a guarantee that a particular edit will succeed. Whichever action you choose, the entire claimed audio must be addressed. For replacement, the new track must cover the full claimed section; for muting or trimming, the affected interval must be fully covered or removed. If claimed audio remains, the claim may not be released.

Preview, save and verify the result
- Preview the edited section before saving. Listen for remaining claimed music, check the start and end boundaries, and make sure you have not removed dialogue or program audio you meant to keep.
- Save the edit and wait for YouTube to process it. Studio shows processing status and an estimate; processing time varies, and you cannot make other edits to that video while this edit is processing.
- When processing finishes, reload the page. Confirm that the edit appears as intended and that the copyright claim is gone.
If the claim remains, review the claimed interval and check whether any claimed audio was left in place. You can make another edit after processing, but remember that saved changes cannot be reverted to the original through Studio Editor.
If the claim is mistaken, consider a dispute instead
A Content ID claim is not automatically a copyright strike. Depending on the claim and territory, it can block a video, allow the claimant to monetize it, or track its viewership. If you believe the claim is wrong and are confident you hold the necessary rights, YouTube provides a dispute process; YouTube says it does not mediate copyright disputes. If you used licensed music, check that the licence covers the archived livestream and the relevant rights and territories. If the claim is valid, removing or replacing the claimed material is an alternative to disputing it. Choose based on whether preserving the original sound and picture matters more than clearing the claim through an edit.
