Set the streaming audio bitrate in OBS
- In OBS Studio, open Settings → Output.
- Find the streaming audio bitrate control. OBS documents audio bitrate as part of streaming output setup; the exact controls can vary by installed version and output mode.
- Use the default setting unless you have a reason to change it. OBS gives around 160 kbps as general streaming guidance and advises using a lower value if upload speed is limited. This is not a rain-stream benchmark.
- Apply the change and test the stream before relying on it for a continuous broadcast. OBS recommends checking that settings work and the stream runs smoothly before the first live broadcast: OBS Studio Overview Guide.
There is no rain-sounds-specific bitrate figure established by the cited OBS guidance. A higher audio bitrate is not automatically better for this use case; consider the destination’s current requirements, your stable upload capacity, and whether the existing default already meets the destination’s requirements.
Choose an audio encoder compatible with your destination
Use the ordinary, widely supported audio path unless your streaming destination specifies otherwise. OBS describes AAC as widely supported and used by nearly all streaming services. It describes Opus as higher quality but less compatible. Confirm the current requirements of the service you stream to; the cited guidance does not establish a platform-specific bitrate ceiling or required sample rate for an unspecified destination. Audio bitrate is not video bitrate
The audio bitrate setting controls the audio stream, not the video bitrate. If you see dropped frames or disconnections during a long broadcast, investigate connection stability and whether the available upload capacity can sustain the configured stream bitrate. OBS’s connection guidance addresses video bitrate and stable upload capacity; changing audio bitrate alone will not resolve every connection problem. Test a 24/7 stream before depending on it
Run a test broadcast and confirm the sound is present, levels are appropriate, and the stream remains stable before treating the setup as continuous. Pay attention to whether the destination accepts the audio format and settings, and check playback at the destination rather than relying only on OBS’s local meters.
If you keep separate configurations for different destinations or situations, save them as OBS Profiles. Profiles store output settings, and OBS gives separate service or home/mobile configurations as examples. See OBS Profiles (published 2022-01-14).

Common problems and what to check
- The audio setting is missing or different: Check the installed OBS version and output mode, then locate the streaming audio bitrate control under Settings → Output. The precise controls may differ by configuration.
- The platform rejects the stream: Verify the destination’s current official audio format and bitrate requirements. The general OBS recommendation does not establish requirements for every service.
- The stream disconnects or drops frames: Check stable upload capacity and the stream’s bitrate configuration. Treat this as a connection issue, not automatically an audio-bitrate issue; use OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance.
- You need different settings for separate destinations: Save a separate OBS Profile for each configuration and verify the selected profile before going live.
