For a one-off capture of a report at a URL, run Chrome in headless mode with --screenshot and choose a viewport size. Chrome saves screenshot.png in the current directory by default:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,1000 https://example.com/report.htmlReplace chrome with the Chrome executable available on your system and use your report’s URL. For repeatable captures, a specific output path, or a full-page image, use Puppeteer.
Capture a report with Chrome’s command line
Chrome’s headless command-line mode opens a page without displaying a browser window. The --screenshot flag saves a PNG of the rendered page. The command-line reference documents screenshot.png in the current working directory as the default output. See the Chrome Headless command-line reference.
- Open a terminal in the folder where you want the image saved.
- Run the command, replacing the executable name and URL as needed:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,1000 https://example.com/report.html - Look for
screenshot.pngin that folder.
The dimensions passed to --window-size set the browser window size and affect the page layout. Choose dimensions that match the report view you need. The documented simple command does not promise to capture the entire document when a report is taller than the viewport.

Wait for content to render
If the report populates charts or data asynchronously, add a timeout in milliseconds:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,1000 --timeout=5000 https://example.com/report.htmlChrome documents --timeout=5000 as waiting up to five seconds before capture, even if the page is still loading. Without --timeout or --virtual-time-budget, capture happens as soon as the page is loaded. A fixed wait is not a guarantee that application-specific work has finished; adjust it to the report and inspect the output. The same Chrome reference describes --virtual-time-budget as another timing option.

Use Puppeteer for scripts and full-page capture
Puppeteer is a better fit when you need a reusable script, a chosen output path, or options beyond the basic CLI capture. Its screenshot API supports full-page output, clipping, transparent backgrounds, and element screenshots. The following ES module example navigates to the report, sets a viewport, waits for a navigation condition, and saves a full-page PNG:

Set the viewport before navigation and capture so responsive layout is based on the intended dimensions. Do not treat network idle as a report-ready signal
waitUntil: 'networkidle2' is one navigation strategy, not proof that the report’s data, charts, or client-side rendering are complete. If the application exposes a reliable ready element or status, wait for that signal before taking the screenshot. Otherwise, use an appropriate explicit wait and verify the image.
Choose the right screenshot scope
- Full page: use
fullPage: trueto capture the full document rather than only the viewport. - Crop: use the screenshot
clipoption to capture a selected region. - One element: locate the element and call its
screenshot()method. - Transparent background: use the documented screenshot option when the output needs transparency.
Consult the Puppeteer API documentation for the exact option shape supported by the version installed in your project.

Understand what the image contains
A screenshot is an image of the page as rendered by the browser, not a copy of its HTML. Chrome’s --dump-dom option instead emits serialized DOM after Chrome parses the page and executes scripts; it is neither the original HTML source nor a screenshot. See the Chrome command-line reference.
Capturing a local HTML report
The documented Chrome CLI example uses a URL, and Puppeteer’s documented pattern navigates to a URL. A universal procedure for local report files, relative assets, and file-access restrictions is not established by those instructions. If your report is on disk, verify that the file URL works in your environment and that dependent scripts, fonts, images, and data loaded successfully before relying on the screenshot.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
- No image appears where expected: Chrome’s documented default is
screenshot.pngin the current working directory. Run the command from the folder where you want the file and check that location. - The image shows only the top portion: the CLI example sets a viewport but does not establish full-document capture. Use Puppeteer’s
fullPage: truewhen you need the full page. - Charts or report values are missing: the page may render them after navigation completes. Increase the CLI timeout or wait for a report-specific ready signal in Puppeteer; then inspect the captured image.
- The layout differs from the visible browser: set the intended viewport explicitly. Responsive pages can change their layout at different dimensions.
- A local report omits assets: confirm that the file URL and each dependency are accessible in that browser environment. Local-file behavior depends on the report and setup.
- Puppeteer exits without saving an image: ensure the script reaches
page.screenshot()and that the browser closes in afinallyblock, as in the example. Check runtime errors and the output path.

Can Chrome headless save a screenshot as JPEG or WebP?
The cited Chrome command-line instructions describe the default PNG screenshot and do not establish CLI options for other image formats. Puppeteer’s documented screenshot options provide the relevant API-level format controls for scripted captures.
Is `–dump-dom` another way to save a screenshot?
No. It outputs serialized DOM after page parsing and script execution; it does not create an image.
