Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo start an FFmpeg YouTube stream automatically after a Linux server reboots, run FFmpeg from an enabled systemd service. Set a restart policy and delay so systemd can relaunch FFmpeg if the process exits. If startup depends on the network being configured, order the service after network-online.target—with the understanding that this works only when the server’s network manager has a suitable wait-online service enabled.
What systemd can—and cannot—recover
An enabled service connects the FFmpeg process to the server’s boot sequence. A restart policy can relaunch the process after it exits. That is not the same as recovering from every stream interruption: if FFmpeg remains running but becomes stalled or disconnected, a normal process-exit restart policy may not act. Test the failure modes you care about on your own server, and check the installed systemd and FFmpeg documentation for version-specific behavior.
Use YouTube’s Live Control Room for the current stream URL and key. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions identify RTMPS as RTMP over TLS; choose the RTMPS server URL there if you want encrypted output.
Prepare and test the FFmpeg command
- Find FFmpeg’s executable path. Use the path provided by your server’s package or build, and confirm it before putting it in a service file.
- Test the complete command interactively. Confirm that the input is readable and YouTube receives data before troubleshooting systemd. FFmpeg’s general command form is
ffmpeg [global_options] [input_options] -i input [output_options] output_url; options generally apply to the next input or output, so keep input options before-iand output options before the destination URL. - Use the current YouTube destination and key. Copy them from Live Control Room. Avoid leaving the key in a command that unrelated users can read, shell history, or broadly readable logs.
The example below shows the service structure, not a complete media command. Replace the example paths and arguments with the exact command you have already tested. Do not include angle-bracket placeholders literally.

Create the systemd service
1. Store the stream key with restricted access
For example, create /etc/youtube-ffmpeg.env as a root-owned file readable only by root, with a line such as STREAM_KEY=your_actual_key. Protect it with restrictive permissions, for example chmod 600 /etc/youtube-ffmpeg.env. Do not put the key in a file readable by other users.
2. Write the unit file
Create /etc/systemd/system/youtube-ffmpeg.service with the following structure. Substitute the real FFmpeg executable, input, and output settings. In the destination URL, use $STREAM_KEY as the environment-variable reference; systemd expands it for the process. Verify the precise expansion and directive behavior against the manuals installed on your server.

Description=FFmpeg YouTube live stream

After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
EnvironmentFile=/etc/youtube-ffmpeg.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -i /path/to/video.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/$STREAM_KEY
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
-re is shown as an example input option for a file being sent at its native rate; it is not appropriate for every input or workflow. The copy settings are also examples, not universal recommendations. Use the tested command that matches your media and YouTube ingest settings. Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build supports the chosen input, codecs, and output protocol.
The sample uses Restart=on-failure to retry after an unsuccessful exit, with a five-second delay to avoid an immediate retry loop. An FFmpeg-user service example uses Restart=always and RestartSec=5; whether to use always or on-failure depends on how you want clean exits handled. Check man systemd.service on the target machine for the semantics supported by its installed systemd version.

3. Decide whether to wait for network configuration
The example includes both Wants=network-online.target and After=network-online.target. network.target is primarily an ordering marker; it does not mean that external connectivity is ready. network-online.target is a wait point whose effect depends on the host’s network manager and its corresponding wait-online service being configured and active. Check the server’s network-manager documentation and service status. Waiting can add time to boot.
Even a successful wait-online signal cannot ensure YouTube, DNS, or the media source is reachable. Keep the restart policy and journal available to diagnose failures after launch.

Reload, enable, start, and verify
- Reload unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable the service for normal boot and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-ffmpeg.service. - Inspect its current state:
sudo systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.service. - Read recent service logs:
sudo journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service -n 100 --no-pager. Follow new entries while diagnosing:sudo journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service -f. - In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm that the stream is receiving data. A systemd service showing as active is not by itself proof that YouTube is receiving a usable stream.
Test reboot and failure recovery separately
- Test boot integration. During a controlled maintenance window, reboot the server. After it returns, check
systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.service, inspect the journal, and confirm YouTube shows incoming stream data. - Test process-exit recovery. In a controlled window, stop or terminate the FFmpeg process and observe whether systemd starts it again according to the configured policy. Avoid doing this during a broadcast you need to preserve.
- Test network-loss behavior separately. A network outage is not equivalent to a process exit. Check the logs and whether FFmpeg exits or remains alive while disconnected. Do not assume HTTP-specific FFmpeg reconnect options provide RTMP-output recovery; confirm behavior for your installed build and protocol.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Service does not start after reboot: confirm it is enabled with
systemctl is-enabled youtube-ffmpeg.service, then inspectsystemctl statusand the journal for unit syntax, executable path, permission, or command errors. - FFmpeg starts before usable connectivity: check which network manager is in use and whether its wait-online service is active. The target dependency cannot wait correctly without the appropriate provider.
- FFmpeg exits repeatedly: read the service journal and run the same command interactively under the service’s user and permissions. Check the input path, output URL, key, and FFmpeg build. The restart delay limits rapid retries but does not fix the underlying cause.
- systemd says active, but YouTube receives no stream: inspect FFmpeg’s output and verify the current ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room. An active process may still be stalled, disconnected, or producing an invalid output.
- Stream key appears in logs or is exposed to other users: restrict access to the environment file and unit, review how the command is logged, and replace the key in Live Control Room if it may have been exposed.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to keeping a server and systemd service running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not going live from a camera. See StreamNeo or start your free day.
