To document a website at 100% browser zoom, confirm the page’s zoom is 100%, choose whether you need the visible viewport or the full page, then capture and inspect the image. Page zoom is separate from operating-system display scaling, device pixel ratio, and zoom controls inside the website itself.
1. Confirm the browser page zoom is 100%
Page zoom changes how a website is rendered in the browser. In Chrome, open the toolbar or menu’s Zoom control and check that it reads 100%. The global default is available at Settings → Appearance → Page zoom. Chrome can also save a zoom level for an individual site, so check for a site-specific override if the page does not match the global setting. Manage those overrides under Settings → Privacy and security → Site Settings → Additional content settings → Zoom levels. See Chrome Help: Change text, image & video sizes (zoom).
These controls concern browser page zoom, not your operating system’s display scaling, the device pixel ratio, or a magnification control built into the website. The cited Chrome instructions do not establish a keyboard shortcut, so use the visible Zoom control to verify the setting.
2. Choose what the documentation needs to show
Decide on the capture scope before taking the screenshot. A viewport capture records the current visible screen; a full-page capture includes content beyond the current viewport. If the evidence is about one specific component, Firefox DevTools also supports capturing an individual element.

| Capture | Use it when | Native option |
|---|---|---|
| Visible viewport | You need to document the current screen state. | Chrome DevTools: Capture screenshot; Firefox: Save visible. |
| Full document | The documentation needs content below or above the visible screen. | Chrome DevTools: Capture a full size screenshot; Firefox: Save full page. |
| One element | You need evidence of a particular component rather than the whole page. | Firefox DevTools: Screenshot Node. |
3. Capture in Chrome
- Open the page and verify the browser’s page zoom is 100%, including any site-specific zoom setting.
- Open Chrome DevTools and its command menu. In the DevTools documentation, the viewport action is More options → Capture screenshot.
- For the whole document, choose Capture a full size screenshot from the same menu instead. Google’s instructions distinguish this from the viewport-only command because it includes content not currently visible. See Chrome DevTools: Device mode.
- Save the image, then inspect the crop and page state before adding it to documentation.
4. Capture in Firefox
- Open the page and confirm page zoom is 100% using Firefox’s zoom control.
- Use Firefox’s page screenshot feature and choose Save visible for the current view or Save full page for the full document. Mozilla Support describes both choices in Take screenshots in Firefox.
- For an isolated component, use Firefox DevTools’ Screenshot Node option. Mozilla’s developer documentation covers page and node capture in Taking screenshots.
- Open the saved image and check that it shows the intended element or page extent.
5. Check the result before using it as evidence
- Confirm the image shows the intended page state and not a loading, error, or intermediate screen.
- Check that the crop matches the chosen scope: visible screen, full document, or selected element.
- Verify text and relevant controls are legible at the size readers will see in the documentation.
- Record that the capture was made at 100% browser page zoom if that setting matters to the reader. Do not treat 100% page zoom as a claim about operating-system scaling or the screenshot’s pixel density.
6. Troubleshooting
The browser says 100%, but the page still looks enlarged or reduced
Check whether Chrome has a saved zoom level for this particular site, rather than relying only on the global default. Also distinguish browser page zoom from operating-system display scaling and any zoom control inside the website.
The screenshot cuts off content below the fold
You likely captured the viewport rather than the full document. In Chrome, use Capture a full size screenshot; in Firefox, choose Save full page.
