To keep website text legible in a printed screenshot report, preview the page with print CSS enabled, check contrast and reflow, then inspect a sample of the actual screenshot or PDF at the size readers will view or print it. There is no universally correct font size, screenshot scale, or printer setting; the final artifact is the test that matters.
Choose the right output: screenshot or PDF
First decide what the report needs to preserve. A screenshot is a fixed visual record of the rendered page. A PDF is produced through the browser’s print workflow, which may apply the website’s print-specific styles. Neither format is guaranteed to be sharper or more legible in every case. Preview the print presentation and inspect the actual output rather than assuming one format will solve readability problems.
Preview the page with print styles enabled
- Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Open the Rendering panel. If it is not visible, open the DevTools More tools menu and select Rendering.
- Under Emulate CSS media type, select print.
- Review the page as it appears with its print styles active. Check text, layout, and any content that moves, disappears, or becomes crowded.
- When finished, return the emulated media type to No emulation before inspecting the normal screen view.
Chrome documents this workflow in its CSS features reference. If you control the website, adjust its print CSS and repeat the preview. If you do not, use the browser’s available output settings and create a test capture before producing the report.

Check contrast, size, and reflow
Contrast
Text can be difficult to read even when it is large enough if its color does not stand out from the background. Chrome’s accessibility guidance describes contrast checks in DevTools and suggestions for color changes; use them to find issues before capturing the page. Chrome’s readability guidance reports that 83.9% of the top million home pages had a low-contrast text issue in February 2022, citing WebAIM Million 2022. That is a historical statistic about web pages, not a measurement of printed screenshot reports.

Text size and reflow
Assess whether text is large enough in the report’s intended viewing conditions, and check whether enlarging it or narrowing the available layout causes content to become clipped, overlap, or disappear. Chrome’s accessibility reference describes resizing the viewport to assess reflow and whether content remains available without loss of information.
Do not rely on a single type-size or zoom target as a guarantee. The right result depends on the page, the report’s layout, and the size at which readers will use it.

Make and inspect a sample report
- Capture one representative page using the output format you plan to deliver.
- Place it in the report at the intended dimensions, rather than judging only the original browser view.
- Inspect the report on screen at its expected reading size. If readers will print it, inspect a printed copy at the expected paper size as well.
- Check small text, low-contrast areas, page breaks, and any content that may have shifted or been cut off.
- If something is hard to read, revise the site’s print styles or the capture and report layout, then make another sample.
The cited Chrome guidance provides preview and accessibility checks, but does not establish a universal font size, DPI, scaling percentage, paper format, or printer setting that guarantees legibility. Treat the final report artifact as the decisive check.

Does print-media emulation create the final PDF?
No. It previews the website’s print CSS in DevTools; create a separate PDF or screenshot to inspect the deliverable.
