Disable animations in a page screenshot
For a viewport screenshot, add the option to page.screenshot():

Capture one element without animations
Use the locator screenshot method when the output should contain a single element. Set animations: 'disabled' explicitly: locator screenshots allow animations by default.

What Playwright does to animations
Playwright documents animations: 'disabled' as stopping CSS animations, CSS transitions, and Web Animations. The details matter if the page’s appearance depends on an animation’s end state:
- Finite animations: Playwright fast-forwards them to completion. This can fire the
transitionendevent. - Infinite animations: Playwright cancels them to their initial state for the capture, then plays them again after the screenshot.
So this is a capture-time animation treatment, not a general-purpose pause for the page. Timers, video, canvas drawing, changing data, and other dynamic content may still vary. For those, stabilize the application or suppress the volatile content separately.

Choose the right screenshot API

For a visual assertion, Playwright Test waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing the image with its baseline. That stabilization helps with transient rendering changes, but does not make separate test runs identical if their environments or page content differ. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guide.
Make visual comparisons repeatable
Disabling animation removes one source of variation. For dependable baseline comparisons, also keep the capture environment consistent: Playwright notes that rendering can differ with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode.

If a page includes content that changes independently of animation, use an appropriate stabilization approach for that content. Playwright’s screenshot stylesheet option, stylePath, can be used to filter dynamic or volatile elements in screenshot comparisons; consult the visual comparisons guide for its use. Avoid treating animation disabling as a substitute for controlling data, timers, or other page state.
Troubleshoot inconsistent screenshots
- The animation still appears to move: Confirm the option is on the screenshot call itself. For element captures, use
locator.screenshot({ animations: 'disabled' }); it is not the locator method’s default. - The element is captured at its final state: That is expected for finite animations, which are fast-forwarded to completion. If you need a different visual state, set up that state separately before capturing.
- An infinite animation looks reset in the image: Playwright cancels infinite animations to their initial state for the screenshot and resumes them afterward.
- Images still differ between runs: Look for dynamic data, timers, video, canvas, or other changing content, then stabilize or filter those separately. Also compare the browser and host environments used for the baseline and current run.
toHaveScreenshot()is unavailable: It is a Playwright Test assertion. Use the test runner for that assertion, or usepage.screenshot()orlocator.screenshot()when you only need an image.
