This makes the computer boot; it does not, by itself, relaunch your streaming app or resume the interrupted YouTube broadcast. To protect the VOD, also record a local copy and check YouTube Studio after an outage.
Set the PC to power on when electricity returns
The feature is controlled by motherboard firmware, not by YouTube or the streaming app. Its name and location vary by motherboard and PC model, so identify your exact model and consult its manual if the menu differs.
- Identify the motherboard or PC model. Use the model printed on the system or motherboard, or check the manufacturer’s system information utility or documentation.
- Enter BIOS/UEFI during startup. Use the key shown on screen or specified in your system manual; the key varies by manufacturer and model.
- Find the power recovery option. Look under Power Management, APM, or a similarly named section. Common names include Restore AC Power Loss, Restore after AC Power Loss, After Power Failure, and AC Power Recovery.
- Choose Power On. This tells supported firmware to start the system when AC power returns. On ASUS’s documented example, the path is Advanced > APM Configuration > Restore AC Power Loss. MSI documents Settings > Advanced > Power Management Setup for specified models. These are model-specific examples, not universal paths. ASUS explains its setting here; consult your exact board’s manual for the correct option and route.
- Save changes and exit. Use the firmware’s save-and-exit command; changing the option without saving will not apply it.
Power On, Power Off, or Last State?
Choose Power On if you want the PC to boot whenever power is restored. Power Off leaves it off. Last State restores the earlier power state in ASUS’s example: if the computer was off before the outage, it may remain off. Other firmware may use different wording or offer different options. ASUS’s explanation of the choices and MSI’s model-specific guidance can help, but your system manual takes precedence.
Test it safely
Do not deliberately cut power to a working gaming PC while it is streaming or writing a recording. If you choose to verify the setting, first close applications and protect any important files; test only when disconnecting AC power is safe for your equipment and circumstances. Intel describes disconnecting and reconnecting AC as a test for its server system, but that procedure is specific to that system and is not a blanket instruction for every PC. What happens to the YouTube stream after the PC boots?
Firmware power recovery solves only the power-on step. The cited motherboard documentation does not establish that OBS or another streaming application will launch, reconnect to YouTube, or continue the same live broadcast after a reboot. Treat those as separate software and broadcast-recovery problems; do not assume that an automatically started PC means the stream has resumed.
When you regain access to the system, check YouTube Studio’s Live content for an archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. That is not a guarantee that an outage-interrupted stream will be fully preserved. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. Read YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

Protect the VOD with a local recording
A local recording is a separate copy, not a way to restart the computer or restore the live broadcast. Before a future stream, enable recording in your streaming software and save to a drive with enough free space. During the stream, verify that the recording file exists and is growing. If the PC loses power, the file may be incomplete or unusable, so check it rather than assuming it is intact. YouTube also advises creators to record a local archive as a backup. Troubleshoot when automatic startup does not work
- The PC stays off after power returns: Confirm that the setting was saved, that it is set to Power On rather than Power Off or Last State, and that you changed the correct firmware option for your model.
- You cannot find the setting: Check the manufacturer’s manual for your exact motherboard or PC. The feature may have a different name, menu location, or availability on your system.
- The PC boots but the stream is offline: That is consistent with the setting’s scope. Check whether the streaming application started and whether it has reconnected; the firmware setting alone does not establish automatic app launch or stream resumption.
- The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete: Check YouTube Studio’s Live content, but do not treat server-side archiving as guaranteed—especially for streams longer than 12 hours or streams interrupted by a power failure. Use a local recording for future backup.
- The PC shuts off during outages and files are at risk: A UPS is an optional way to provide short-term backup power, but it cannot guarantee continuity through an extended outage. It does not replace the firmware setting or a local recording.
