Dismiss the modal first, confirm it is gone, then capture the page. In Playwright, the right method depends on whether you are dealing with an overlay drawn inside the web page or a browser JavaScript dialog such as alert(), confirm(), or prompt().
Identify which kind of modal is blocking the page
A page overlay is part of the website: it may be a cookie notice, newsletter prompt, sign-in dialog, or other element layered over page content. Dismiss it through the site’s own close button or other normal control.
A JavaScript dialog is browser-managed rather than a page element. Playwright handles these dialogs differently: it dismisses them automatically by default. A page overlay and a JavaScript dialog therefore should not be handled with the same locator or close-button logic.
Dismiss a predictable page overlay with Playwright
If you know the overlay is expected, wait for its close control, click it, and wait for the overlay to disappear before taking the screenshot. Use selectors that match the actual page; the example selectors below are illustrative and must be replaced with selectors from your target site.

})();If the site has no accessible dialog role or button name, inspect the page and use a selector for its actual close control. Avoid clicking a broad selector such as every button on the page: it can trigger unrelated actions or dismiss the wrong interface.
Handle an overlay whose appearance is unpredictable
When a page overlay may or may not appear, Playwright’s locator handler can respond when an action or auto-waiting assertion checks the page. The handler does not run just because an overlay appears while the script is idle. Register it before the action likely to encounter the overlay, and still ensure the overlay is gone before capture.

})();Use an explicit close-and-wait sequence instead when the overlay is a known part of the workflow. A handler is useful for uncertain timing, not a substitute for deciding what should happen when the overlay appears.
Handle JavaScript alert, confirm, and prompt dialogs
Playwright automatically dismisses JavaScript dialogs by default. If you register a dialog listener, the listener must explicitly accept or dismiss each dialog; otherwise, the page can remain blocked and subsequent actions can stall.

Use a locator screenshot for a specific component. Playwright scrolls the element into view; if another element covers it, that covering element can affect the result.

Playwright supports CSS-pixel and device-pixel screenshot scaling. Device-pixel scale can produce larger images on high-DPI displays, so choose it when the added detail is useful and the resulting file size is acceptable. See Playwright’s screenshot documentation for capture options.

Troubleshoot a screenshot that still shows the modal
- The close click times out: The modal may not have appeared, the selector may not match this site’s markup, or the button may not be visible yet. Inspect the page and target the actual close control rather than assuming a universal selector.
- The screenshot catches the overlay: Wait for the modal itself to reach the hidden state after clicking; a completed click does not by itself prove the overlay has disappeared.
- The page appears stuck after a dialog: If you registered a JavaScript-dialog listener, make sure it calls
accept()ordismiss()for every dialog. - A locator handler did not run: Handlers run when Playwright performs an action or auto-waiting assertion that checks the page, not simply when the overlay appears during idle time.
- The element screenshot is obscured: A locator screenshot scrolls the target into view but does not guarantee another page element is not covering it; inspect the covering element and capture after it is removed or moved.
