A white screenshot after page.goto() does not point to one specific cause. First check where navigation ended and the main document’s HTTP status; then confirm the page’s expected content is actually present before capturing it. For JavaScript-rendered pages, waiting for a page-specific element is usually a more useful readiness check than relying on network activity alone.
1. Check the destination and navigation response
page.goto() resolves with the main resource response, or with null in documented cases. Redirects resolve with the last response. A resolved navigation does not prove that the page you wanted loaded successfully.
Log the requested URL, final URL, and response status. This example uses Puppeteer’s documented networkidle2 navigation pattern, then checks the response and page title before taking a screenshot:

In headless shell, valid HTTP error statuses such as 404 and 500 do not make goto() throw. Check response.status() explicitly rather than treating the absence of an exception as proof of success. Navigating to about:blank or to the same URL with only a different hash returns null, so handle a missing response accordingly. See the Puppeteer Page.goto() reference.
2. Wait for the content you need, not just navigation
Network idle can be a useful starting point, but it is not a guarantee that a client-rendered application has displayed the view you intend to capture. Wait for a selector that identifies the real content, then check that it contains meaningful data.

A generic selector such as body may appear before the application has populated it. Capture the whole page
Wait for a meaningful page-specific element, verify its content, and then call page.screenshot(). The screenshot API captures the rendered page; it does not determine whether the application has finished loading the data you need.
Capture a single element
If only one component matters, wait for it and use its element handle:

Do not assume network idle means application ready
Some pages continue making requests, while others finish their requests before the useful content is visible. Use the selector and content check as the actual capture gate. Choose a timeout that fits the target page and fail with a useful message if the expected element never appears.

If the expected text and elements are present in the DOM but the captured pixels are white, separate a rendering problem from a readiness problem:

- Run the same navigation in a headful browser and compare the result.
- Inspect page console messages and failed requests for errors associated with rendering or data loading.
- Check whether the site changes behavior when it detects headless rendering. Chrome’s guide describes a headless signal that client-side code can use, but that is an investigation path—not evidence that a particular site is doing so.
- Compare the DOM and screenshot at the same point in the run, after the same readiness condition.
These checks help narrow the cause; there is no universal white-page fix established for every Puppeteer site.
5. Confirm the target format and browser mode
If the URL points to a PDF rather than an HTML page, verify which browser mode Puppeteer launched. The current Page.goto() reference says headless shell does not support navigation to a PDF document. This limitation is specifically documented for headless shell; do not assume it applies to every launch mode. Confirm the actual target and mode before changing the screenshot logic.
6. Troubleshoot by symptom
