There is no single conversion command that fixes every YouTube Live “format” rejection. First check whether your stream is configured for RTMP/RTMPS or HLS: they require different output. RTMP/RTMPS generally means producing a compatible encoded stream; HLS means producing a correctly packaged, rolling playlist of transport-stream segments and sending it to YouTube’s HLS ingest URL.
First identify what “playlist” and ingest protocol mean here
The error, FFmpeg command, playlist contents, and stream protocol are not specified, so the precise cause cannot be determined from the rejection alone. “Playlist” may mean an HLS .m3u8 playlist, or a text list that FFmpeg reads to combine or loop input files. Those are different situations: an input playlist can be read successfully while its codecs or output packaging remain incompatible with YouTube.
In YouTube Live Control Room, check which protocol is configured for the stream key and copy the matching ingest details. Then gather the exact error, the full FFmpeg command, and the playlist’s first lines. Remove stream keys, tokens, and private URLs before sharing them. These details help distinguish playlist parsing, codec, muxing, and protocol problems.
| Configured protocol | What the output needs | Latency consideration |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP or RTMPS | YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio. Check the encoded stream properties, not just the filename extension. YouTube’s encoder settings | Use this path when you intend to send a continuous encoded stream. |
| HLS | TS segments, a rolling playlist, and HTTPS POST or PUT delivery to the HLS ingest URL provided by YouTube. YouTube’s HLS setup requirements | HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP streaming; YouTube’s ultra-low-latency option is turned off when HLS is selected. YouTube encoder settings |
If the stream uses RTMP or RTMPS
Check codecs before changing the container
YouTube’s current RTMP/RTMPS encoder table lists H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio. A container or extension change alone does not turn an unsupported video codec into H.264 or change an audio codec. FFmpeg stream copy likewise preserves the input codecs and encoded properties; it is useful for compatible streams that only need remuxing, not for correcting an incompatible codec.

Inspect the inputs and the command’s output settings. If the input codecs are incompatible, encode the output to codecs accepted for the configured protocol. If the codecs are already compatible, investigate other encoder settings and whether the output is being sent to the correct ingest endpoint. Use YouTube’s resolution- and frame-rate-specific bitrate recommendations rather than assuming one rate suits every stream.
Use bitrate guidance for the actual output
For 1080p at 30 fps using H.264, YouTube Help lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate in its live encoder settings table, accessed 2026. Those figures apply to that resolution, frame rate, and codec; they are not a universal setting or proof that bitrate caused a format rejection. Consult the table for other output combinations: YouTube live encoder settings.

If the stream uses HLS
Meet YouTube’s segment and playlist requirements
HLS is not simply an RTMP stream saved as a playlist. YouTube requires a specific HLS package and upload behavior:
- Use MPEG-TS (TS) segments. YouTube states: “Segment Format: must be TS (Transport Stream).”
- Keep segment duration between one and four seconds.
- Do not use byte-range mode.
- Use a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
- Deliver segments and playlist updates with HTTPS POST or PUT to the HLS ingestion URL supplied in Live Control Room.
- For HLS, YouTube lists H.264 and HEVC video, and AAC, AC3, and EAC3 audio.
See YouTube’s current requirements and setup flow at Set up live streaming using an encoder with HLS. Its HLS option does not offer YouTube ultra-low latency.

Configure FFmpeg’s HLS muxer for the real endpoint
FFmpeg’s HLS muxer can generate playlist and segment files and upload them over HTTP. Its documentation describes a PUT example that uploads MPEG-TS segments and periodically updates the M3U8 playlist. That example explains FFmpeg’s behavior; it is not a YouTube endpoint. Use the actual HTTPS HLS URL generated for your stream, and confirm the receiving endpoint accepts the selected HTTP method.
Read the options and example in the FFmpeg HLS muxer documentation. In particular, the muxer’s method option controls HTTP upload behavior. Do not copy the manual’s illustrative server URL into a live YouTube command.

Choose the right kind of conversion
| Problem | What changes it | What does not fix it by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Input video or audio codec is not accepted for the selected protocol | Re-encode to a codec supported for that protocol. | Renaming the file or changing only its container. |
| Codecs are acceptable, but the container or muxing is wrong | Repackage/remux into the output format required by the ingest path, if the encoded streams can be retained. | Stream copy when the underlying codec is incompatible. |
| HLS playlist or delivery requirements are not met | Generate TS segments and a compliant rolling playlist, then upload with HTTPS POST or PUT to the provided HLS URL. | Sending a generic M3U8 or using an arbitrary HTTP endpoint. |
| Playlist cannot be read by FFmpeg | Check playlist syntax, referenced file paths or URLs, and the FFmpeg input options for that playlist type. | Changing YouTube’s output codec before confirming FFmpeg can parse the input. |
FFmpeg commands depend on the input media, playlist format, desired protocol, and destination URL. Without those details, a supposedly universal command risks changing the wrong thing or sending a valid output to the wrong ingest endpoint.
Troubleshoot the rejection systematically
- Copy the complete YouTube error. Note when it appears: while configuring the stream, when connecting, or after media begins arriving.
- Confirm RTMP/RTMPS versus HLS. Match the protocol to the corresponding YouTube ingest URL and requirements; do not use an HLS URL with an RTMP output or vice versa.
- Confirm what FFmpeg is reading. Determine whether the input is an HLS M3U8 playlist or a text file list. Check that each referenced file or URL is reachable and that the playlist syntax matches how FFmpeg is invoked.
- Inspect input and output codecs. Compare them with the requirements for the selected protocol. If incompatible, re-encode; if compatible, investigate muxing, playlist packaging, and encoder settings instead.
- For HLS, validate packaging and delivery. Verify TS segments, one-to-four-second duration, no byte ranges, at most five outstanding segments, HTTPS delivery, and the POST or PUT method accepted by the endpoint.
- For RTMP/RTMPS, check encoder settings. Use YouTube’s current table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, including bitrate and keyframe interval guidance. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Retest with the matching stream configuration. Keep the exact command and error text so the next diagnosis can focus on the remaining mismatch.

YouTube Live, copyright, and reused recordings
A technically accepted stream is not automatically cleared for copyright or monetization. Before looping recordings, confirm you have rights to the video, music, and other included material, and review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and monetization policies. Repeating the same material does not itself establish that a channel meets monetization requirements. Stream configuration fixes cannot resolve rights claims or policy eligibility.
