Yes—conditionally. A Raspberry Pi may be able to relay a prerecorded gaming video to YouTube Live, especially if it can send the video without re-encoding it. If the Pi must encode video, add overlays, or handle a demanding audio and capture pipeline, its capabilities and the exact setup matter. A Pi 5 has no hardware H.264 encoder, so it relies on its CPU for H.264 encoding.

What do you mean by a gaming VOD stream?

“VOD stream” can describe two different workloads:

  • Relay a prerecorded video: The Pi reads an existing gaming recording and sends it as a live stream. If the video is already compatible and the software can pass through or remux its video, the Pi may not need to encode every frame.
  • Capture and encode live gameplay: The Pi receives a live game feed, perhaps adds overlays or mixes audio, and encodes the result. This is more demanding. The available evidence does not establish that a Pi can run a demanding game and stream it at a particular quality.

The distinction is important: a benchmark for encoding video does not tell you whether a complete capture, overlay, audio, and streaming setup will work reliably.

What the Raspberry Pi 5 can handle

Raspberry Pi Ltd.’s 2026 performance paper says the Pi 5 has no hardware H.264 encoder and uses the CPU for H.264 encoding. In the paper’s encoding tests, real-time 1080p30 in low-latency mode used as little as 60% of one CPU core; its high-quality mode used approximately 100–150% of one core. These are encoding measurements, not guarantees for a full streaming application or every source file, overlay, audio chain, operating system, or cooling setup. For comparison, the same paper reports that the Pi 4 hardware encoder’s bitrate ceiling is approximately 6–14 Mb/s depending on content complexity, and that it cannot produce bitrates below approximately 240 kb/s. Those figures describe the Pi 4 encoder—not a universal streaming limit or a promise that any Pi model can handle a particular YouTube VOD workflow.

Match the file and output to YouTube Live

YouTube’s published live-encoder guidance recommends RTMPS ingest, H.264 video, constant bitrate encoding, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into formats for viewers. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.

A video’s source-file codec and YouTube’s ingest requirements are related but not interchangeable. A file that plays locally may still need to be remuxed or transcoded to produce a valid stream with compatible audio and timestamps. If transcoding is required, the Pi must do more work; the Pi 5 encoding figures above are relevant as a starting point, not proof that a particular pipeline will sustain your target output.

A practical way to test a Pi-based setup

  1. Inspect the recording. Identify its video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, and whether the audio and timestamps are suitable for the streaming software you plan to use.
  2. Choose the least demanding valid path. If the recording is already H.264, check whether your software can pass through or remux the video while producing compatible audio and timestamps. Do not assume this will work for every file.
  3. Set YouTube-compatible ingest. Configure the output for RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), following YouTube’s current guidance.
  4. Test privately or unlisted for the full intended duration. Watch for dropped frames, audio drift, CPU pressure, and interruptions; a brief successful launch does not establish sustained stability.
  5. Add complexity gradually. If you need encoding, begin with a modest target such as 1080p30 and keep overlays or other CPU-heavy tasks limited. The Pi 5 paper’s 1080p30 result is an encoding benchmark, not a guaranteed end-to-end setting.

For live game capture from another device, assess the capture method and whether the Pi must encode or composite the input. Raspberry Pi’s rpicam-vid documentation covers camera video capture/output and network streaming options, but does not document a gaming VOD file-to-YouTube workflow. See the rpicam-vid documentation.

How to choose between a Pi and a more capable setup

Compare the actual workload rather than relying on the device name alone:

  • Video path: Can the source be passed through or remuxed, or must it be re-encoded?
  • Output target: What resolution and frame rate do you need?
  • Extra processing: Will the setup capture gameplay, composite overlays, or mix audio?
  • Reliability: Does it remain stable for the full stream duration?

This is a practical comparison framework, not a published head-to-head test of a Pi against a desktop or dedicated encoder.

Copyright and YouTube channel considerations

Using a recording as a live stream does not remove the need to have the rights to its gameplay footage, music, commentary, or other included material. Check the rights and permissions relevant to your recording before streaming it. A technically valid ingest setup also does not guarantee that a stream or channel will meet YouTube’s policies or monetization requirements.
