You can stream archived game jam VODs continuously by playing the files through a computer-based encoder and sending that feed to a YouTube Live event. YouTube provides the event, stream URL, and stream key; your playback and encoder software must handle looping and recovery. Plan for separate sessions rather than assuming a single 24/7 broadcast will be archived in full.
Before you start: check channel eligibility and VOD rights
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Confirm you have permission to broadcast every part of each VOD, including game footage, music, overlays, and other third-party material. YouTube’s live-stream terms place responsibility for necessary rights on the provider. Game jam participants’ permission to post a VOD does not automatically establish permission to rebroadcast it live.
- Keep the source files available locally or in storage your playback setup can access. The encoder sends the playing feed; it does not, by itself, create a repeating playlist.
Set up a continuous VOD feed
1. Choose playback and encoding software
Use a computer-based encoder that can transmit a video playback feed to YouTube. YouTube describes encoders as an option for gameplay and overlays and documents connecting one with a stream URL and key. The official setup pages do not prescribe a particular file-loop, playlist-repeat, or automatic-recovery configuration, so check the documentation for the playback and encoder software you choose.
Before relying on an unattended setup, verify that it can play your archive files in order, repeat the playlist as intended, keep audio in sync, and recover from a playback or connection interruption. Software encoding is supported; YouTube does not establish that a dedicated hardware encoder is necessary for this use case. Its guidance recommends professional-grade hardware for higher-production events, not as a requirement for replaying VODs. See YouTube’s overview of live-streaming options and encoder setup steps.
2. Create or schedule the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create a live stream or schedule one. Scheduling gives viewers a shareable event page and can provide reminders.
- Review the event’s stream settings. Reusing settings from an earlier stream can carry over configuration, including the stream key, so confirm that the selected event and key are the ones you intend to use.
For the current setting flow, use Manage live stream settings and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your event. Do not publish it in a VOD, chat, screenshot, or public configuration file.

3. Connect the encoder and configure the loop
- Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s setup screen into the corresponding fields in your encoder.
- Select the archive playback source or playlist in your playback setup, and configure repeat or restart behavior there if available.
- Start the encoder and wait for YouTube to receive the feed. Check the preview before going live, then start the event when the image and audio are correct.
The exact names and locations of loop and restart controls depend on your chosen software; YouTube’s official instructions cover the connection, not an unattended VOD-loop recipe. Test a complete pass through the playlist and its transition back to the beginning before leaving the channel unattended.
4. Monitor the broadcast and keep a local backup
Confirm the event is accessible to its intended audience, then monitor picture, sound, and playback transitions. YouTube’s computer live-stream tips recommend previewing and monitoring the stream and keeping a local recording. A local copy gives you a fallback if the live archive is incomplete or the broadcast is interrupted.

Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so an uninterrupted 24/7 event is not a dependable way to create a complete YouTube archive. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
For a channel that needs both continuous playback and dependable recordings, plan deliberate stream sessions and archive handling instead of treating one indefinite broadcast as the master copy. Keep local recordings, and decide how you will preserve or publish the source VODs independently of YouTube’s automatic live archive.

Protect the stream from copyright interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can interrupt or terminate a live broadcast, and a Content ID claim may also appear on an archived live stream after the event ends. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Before broadcasting a game jam archive, check permissions for both the game footage and every audio track, including background music and music captured in the original recording. Where relevant, ask rights holders about YouTube live use and Content ID allowlisting. A VOD having remained online previously does not, on its own, show that its material is cleared for a new live broadcast.

Troubleshooting a VOD livestream
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed
Check that the stream URL and key match the event you created, that the key was copied without extra characters, and that the encoder is running. If you reused stream settings, verify that the carried-over key belongs to the intended event.
The VOD stops instead of looping
The repeat behavior belongs to the playback or encoder setup, not to the YouTube event configuration described in YouTube’s setup guidance. Recheck playlist repeat and end-of-file behavior in your selected software, then test the transition before leaving the feed unattended.
The stream is interrupted or terminated
Check the Live Control Room and any notices from YouTube. A third-party-content match can disrupt a live stream; review the rights for the video and audio and address any claim or restriction with the relevant rights holder and YouTube.
