To stream a pre-recorded playlist as a scheduled YouTube Live event, schedule the event in YouTube Studio and send it a continuous program from an encoder or hosted playout service. Put breaks into that outgoing program—YouTube’s cited guidance does not document a native feature for inserting timed breaks between playlist items.

How the workflow fits together

YouTube schedules and hosts the live event; a separate encoder or playout service supplies the video program. A “playlist” in this setup means a sequence of media files played into the live stream, not a YouTube Live playlist with built-in break controls. YouTube’s encoder instructions cover connecting an encoder, but not authoring a playlist or adding timed breaks. YouTube’s encoder setup guide is the reference for the platform connection.

For a dependable workflow, prepare one continuous output that contains the videos in order and the break material at the intended times. A break could be a slate, intermission video, silence, or other content your playout tool can insert. If you choose a hosted service, verify that it supports the exact break behavior you need; scheduling or repeating a playlist alone does not establish timed-break support.

Before you schedule the event

  • Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. See Get started with live streaming.
  • Prepare the media and break assets. Decide the playback order, whether the sequence repeats, and the duration and content of each break. Check that the selected encoder or service can produce that exact sequence.
  • Check rights and YouTube policies. Make sure you have the rights needed for every video, music track, and other element. A live presentation does not remove copyright obligations. Also consider whether the channel’s overall programming offers enough original value for YouTube’s monetization rules; permission to use media and eligibility for monetization are separate questions.
  • Choose an unattended operating plan. A local encoder requires the computer and its media source to remain available throughout the broadcast. A hosted playout service may avoid that local-computer requirement, but confirm its controls and limitations before relying on it.

Schedule the YouTube Live event

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select Manage.
  2. Choose the option to schedule a stream and enter the event details, including its title, description, visibility, and planned start time.
  3. Review the event settings and schedule it. YouTube says scheduled streams can be promoted, may appear in subscribers’ feeds as upcoming, and allow viewers to opt into reminders. The available settings are described in Manage live stream settings.
  4. Keep the scheduled event selected in Live Control Room when configuring the encoder, so the outgoing program is connected to the intended event rather than another stream.

Build and send the playlist with scheduled breaks

1. Assemble a continuous program

Use an encoder or playout tool that can play the source files in sequence. Place the break content directly into the program at the desired points, or use an explicit timed-break feature in the selected tool. Set ordering, repeat behavior, transition or gap behavior, and break duration there. These are playout controls, not settings established by the YouTube scheduling workflow.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0

2. Connect the encoder to the scheduled event

In the encoder, select YouTube if offered, or enter the stream URL and stream key supplied by YouTube. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe both connection approaches. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or share it with anyone who should not be able to send video to your channel.

3. Check preview and start behavior

Before airtime, confirm that the scheduled event is receiving the expected picture and audio in Live Control Room. Check the encoder’s scheduled-stream behavior as well as YouTube’s event controls: whether starting or stopping the encoder also starts or ends the event depends on the relevant auto-start and auto-stop settings. The OBS Project’s YouTube with OBS Studio guide discusses those settings, but interfaces and behavior can change by version. Verify them in the versions you are using.

Approach What the cited material supports What to verify for scheduled breaks
Local encoder YouTube supports scheduled streams fed by an encoder using the stream URL and key. OBS has guidance for connecting to scheduled YouTube events. Playlist order and repeats, gap duration, break graphics and audio, unattended operation, and how the current encoder and YouTube settings handle starting and stopping.
OneStream Live Its pre-recorded streaming guidance describes scheduling prerecorded broadcasts and repeats. Whether the current service supports timed breaks within a playlist, the plan required, destination support, and storage or retention limits.
Restream Its playlist guide describes creating and scheduling a video playlist for YouTube and other destinations. Whether the current service supports timed breaks within a playlist, and current plan and feature limits.

The cited OneStream Live and Restream pages establish scheduling or playlist workflows, not the timed-break behavior needed here. Ask the service or test the exact workflow before depending on automatic breaks.

Archive and runtime considerations

YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Treat that as YouTube’s stated platform behavior, not a guarantee for every event; check the current encoder guidance before relying on an archive. If the broadcast is intended to run longer, plan how viewers will access recordings and how you will verify the event afterward.

Troubleshooting

  • The scheduled event does not show an incoming preview: confirm you selected the right event, that the encoder is connected to its stream URL and key, and that the key was entered correctly.
  • The encoder starts but the YouTube event does not go live: review the scheduled-stream auto-start setting in the encoder and the event state in Live Control Room. OBS’s guidance notes that auto-start and auto-stop affect whether encoder actions also start or end a scheduled event; confirm current behavior in both interfaces.
  • A break is missing or begins at the wrong time: inspect the playlist or timeline in the playout tool. YouTube’s documented scheduling and encoder setup does not add timed breaks between files.
  • Playback stops between files: check whether the selected tool supports continuous sequential playback and how it handles transitions, gaps, and file changes. Those details must be verified in that tool.
  • The stream key may have been exposed: replace or reset it in YouTube’s live-stream settings, then update the encoder before the next broadcast.
  • The recording is unavailable after the event: check event duration and YouTube’s current archiving guidance; the cited guidance specifies automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours.
