YouTube Live cannot play MP4 files directly from an external drive. To broadcast them as one live stream, keep the drive connected to a computer, play the files in OBS Studio using its VLC Video source, and send OBS’s output to a YouTube Live event. A YouTube playlist is different: it organizes videos already hosted on YouTube.

How do I stream a playlist of local MP4 files to YouTube Live?

Use OBS Studio as the encoder between your local files and YouTube. OBS plays the MP4 files in the order you choose; YouTube receives the resulting live video feed, not access to your drive.

  1. Check channel access. Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live event and open its Live Control Room to get the stream settings. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential that tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat it like a password: do not show it in screenshots or share it publicly. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
  2. Prepare the files. Connect and mount the external drive before configuring OBS. Confirm that each MP4 plays, decide the order, and avoid renaming or moving files after adding them to the playlist. Keep the drive connected and available throughout the broadcast.
  3. Add the playlist in OBS. In the Sources dock, click + and select VLC Video. Add the MP4 files in the desired playback order. Turn on Loop Playlist if the sequence should restart after the last file; leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence. OBS requires VLC to be installed for the VLC Video source to appear; its documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. See OBS Project: Media Sources.
  4. Set up the YouTube output. In OBS, open Settings > Stream and configure the service and stream settings using the information from YouTube Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private. Start streaming from OBS, then inspect the event preview in Live Control Room before making the stream public or beginning the event.
  5. Rehearse the full setup. Test the same resolution, frame rate, scene, audio, and file order you intend to use live. Verify that the files advance correctly, sound is present, the external drive stays available, and the YouTube preview looks right. YouTube recommends testing before going live, monitoring stream quality, and keeping about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. That 20% is an operational recommendation, not a guarantee that a connection will be stable. See YouTube Help: Streaming tips.
  6. Keep a backup when the event matters. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local archive. An archive is not assured for a longer stream: YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. See YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

Can I use videos from an external hard drive in a YouTube live stream?

Yes, if a computer can read the files and an encoder plays them into the live output. YouTube does not read the external drive itself. The drive must remain connected and mounted while OBS is using the files; if it becomes unavailable, playback may stop or a file may be missing. OBS’s local-file support does not establish any automatic recovery behavior after a drive disconnect, so check the drive and playlist and rehearse again before going live.

Which playlist should I use?

What you want to do Use Important distinction
Let viewers watch a sequence of videos already hosted on YouTube Create and share a YouTube playlist Its entries are YouTube videos, not files stored only on your drive. Private videos require sharing permission for viewers. YouTube Help: Share playlists.
Broadcast local MP4 files together as one live output Play them in OBS with the VLC Video source, then stream OBS to YouTube The files must remain accessible to the computer, and OBS’s VLC playlist source requires VLC.

How do I play local videos in a YouTube livestream?

For one file, OBS’s built-in Media Source supports MP4 and can loop that file. For a sequence of files, use VLC Video so you can add multiple files as a playlist and control looping or shuffle. Avoid adding each file as a separate overlapping source if your aim is to play them sequentially.

Troubleshooting

  • VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu: Install VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC, as specified by the OBS Project.
  • Only one file plays: Check that all files were added to the VLC Video playlist and are in the intended order, rather than added as separate sources that overlap.
  • A file is missing or playback stops: Check whether the external drive is still mounted and whether the source still points to the file. Do not assume OBS will recover automatically after the drive disconnects; test the repaired setup before reconnecting to the live event.
  • The YouTube preview looks poor or viewers report buffering: Check stream health, OBS output settings, and upload bandwidth under representative conditions. YouTube recommends around 20% headroom above the total upload bitrate, plus a rehearsal and ongoing monitoring. YouTube Help: Streaming tips.
  • A YouTube playlist link does not show local files: That is expected. A YouTube playlist contains videos hosted on YouTube, not MP4 files on your drive. YouTube Help: Share playlists.

Copyright and live-stream rules

Before streaming, check YouTube’s current eligibility and live-stream rules and make sure you have the necessary rights to the video and audio. A file playing successfully from your drive does not by itself establish that you may broadcast it. Copyright or other policy issues can affect a live stream or its archive.
