Run FFmpeg on the Raspberry Pi and use SSH from another device to start, inspect, and stop the streaming process. The Pi still does the encoding and sends the stream to YouTube; SSH is the remote control channel, not a dashboard built into FFmpeg. You need a network-connected Pi with SSH configured, an FFmpeg build that supports your chosen YouTube ingest protocol, and the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio.
How remote control works
A headless Pi has no monitor, keyboard, or mouse attached. Once it is connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet and SSH is enabled, you can sign in from another computer on the network and operate its command line. FFmpeg runs on the Pi; its command-line process reads the configured input, encodes or passes through media as specified, and sends output to YouTube.
Raspberry Pi documents headless setup and SSH through Raspberry Pi Imager: Raspberry Pi headless setup. FFmpeg documents its command-line usage and protocols at FFmpeg documentation. The exact login address, installation steps, and available protocol support depend on the Pi’s operating system and installed package.
Prepare the Pi and confirm FFmpeg
- Set up network access and SSH. In Raspberry Pi Imager, configure the operating system image for headless use, including Wi-Fi or use Ethernet, and enable SSH. Ensure the Pi and the device you will connect from can reach each other. Raspberry Pi Connect is another documented remote-access option; choose it if you need its remote-access service rather than command-line SSH, but the sources do not establish a comparative performance advantage over SSH.
- Connect over SSH. Use the Pi’s reachable hostname or IP address with an SSH client. For example, from a terminal, use
ssh username@raspberry-pi-hostname, replacing both values with the account and address configured on your Pi. If name resolution fails, find the Pi’s current IP address through your router or local network tools. - Check the installed FFmpeg build. Run
ffmpeg -versionto identify the package, then inspect its supported protocols withffmpeg -protocols. Confirm the protocol you plan to use is listed. A package’s capabilities cannot be assumed from the command name alone, and this check does not establish that a particular Pi can encode a particular resolution or frame rate. - Decide what remote operation means for your setup. An interactive SSH session is enough to launch and stop a process while you are connected. If the stream must continue after your SSH connection closes or recover automatically after a reboot or process failure, configure an appropriate process supervisor for your operating system. The right service definition depends on the OS and command; there is no universal service recipe established here.
Get the YouTube stream destination and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into the FFmpeg output configuration.
- Treat the key as a credential. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep it private; do not include it in screenshots, shared command history, or public logs. YouTube’s instructions are at Manage live stream settings.
- If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. YouTube says this action requires channel-owner or manager permission. Update the FFmpeg configuration with the replacement key before the next stream.
Store the key in a protected configuration location and restrict access to it. Be cautious when running commands that place credentials directly in shell arguments: commands may be retained in shell history or exposed to other local users, depending on the system and how it is configured.

Choose an ingest protocol
YouTube recommends RTMPS for standard encoder streaming. RTMPS is RTMP carried over a secure SSL connection, but it will work only when the selected YouTube endpoint and your installed FFmpeg build support the configuration. Check FFmpeg’s protocol list and use the endpoint YouTube provides for the selected stream. See YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and FFmpeg’s protocol documentation.
YouTube also documents HLS ingestion for supported cases, including HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP. That does not mean HLS is automatically the right choice for a Pi: confirm the stream’s codec and configuration requirements in YouTube’s HLS ingestion guidance, then verify that the local FFmpeg build and workload support them.

There is no single bitrate or resolution target that can be responsibly prescribed without knowing the source, resolution, frame rate, codec, and Pi model. Use YouTube’s recommendations for the selected stream format rather than treating a bitrate table as a performance guarantee for the Pi.
Start, monitor, and stop the stream remotely
- Prepare the FFmpeg command for your actual input. Specify the media input, any required video and audio handling, and the YouTube output URL and key. Select the encoder, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval to match the source and YouTube’s current recommendations. The available information does not specify an input or Pi model, so a single complete command would risk encoding the wrong source or exceeding the device’s capability.
- Launch the process on the Pi through SSH. Review the destination carefully before starting. FFmpeg output can expose useful diagnostics in the terminal; do not share logs or command text containing the stream key.
- Check the preview in Live Control Room. For a scheduled YouTube stream, start the encoder, wait for the preview to appear, and then click Go live in Live Control Room. Confirm that video and audio look and sound correct before relying on the stream.
- Monitor stream health. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and inspect audio and video quality during the event. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring the stream: YouTube encoder guidance.
- Stop it from the SSH session. If FFmpeg is running in the foreground of that session, use
qwhere FFmpeg accepts interactive input, or send an interrupt withCtrl+C. If it was launched under a supervisor or in the background, stop it through the same mechanism that started it. Do not terminate an unrelated process by guessing its process ID.
SSH, Raspberry Pi Connect, and RTMPS versus HLS
| Choice | Use it when | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| SSH | You need to issue command-line actions to the Pi and manage an FFmpeg process. | Requires network reachability and SSH configuration; it is not an FFmpeg dashboard. |
| Raspberry Pi Connect | You prefer Raspberry Pi’s remote-access service. | The documentation confirms it as an option but does not establish a comparative evaluation against SSH. |
| RTMPS | You are using YouTube’s standard encoder ingest path and your endpoint and FFmpeg build support it. | YouTube recommends RTMPS; verify support in the installed FFmpeg build. |
| HLS | Your YouTube stream configuration requires a supported HLS case, such as certain HDR or non-RTMP codecs. | Check YouTube’s requirements and the Pi’s FFmpeg build; support for a specific Pi workload is not established. |
Troubleshoot common remote-stream failures
- SSH cannot reach the Pi: Confirm the Pi has power and Wi-Fi or Ethernet connectivity, verify the hostname or current IP address, and ensure SSH was enabled during setup. A headless Pi still needs network access and a remote-access method.
- FFmpeg reports an unsupported protocol: Check
ffmpeg -protocolsand confirm the selected output scheme is supported by that build. Install or use a build with the required support, or choose a YouTube-supported protocol that the build can use. - YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the stream URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm the FFmpeg output configuration uses the matching ingest endpoint and protocol, and make sure the key has not been reset. Never post the key when asking for help.
- The encoder connects but the preview is wrong or absent: Check the input selection, audio/video mapping, codec and stream configuration, then consult YouTube’s guidance for the selected ingest method. Wait for the preview before clicking Go live on a scheduled stream.
- The stream stops when SSH disconnects: The process may be tied to the interactive session. Use a process supervisor configured for your Pi’s operating system if it must run independently of that session; configure and test its start, stop, and restart behavior rather than assuming the SSH session persists.
- The Pi cannot sustain the selected output: The title alone does not identify the Pi generation, source, resolution, frame rate, or encoding choice, so no model-specific performance guarantee is possible. Test the exact workload and adjust the output to a format the device can sustain while meeting YouTube’s current recommendations.
- The stream key may have leaked: Reset it in Live Control Room with an owner or manager account, then update the protected configuration on the Pi.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded videos rather than a live camera or other real-time input, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded material at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo or current plans, then start your free day.
