Yes—an independent project made the original Halo: Combat Evolved playable in a browser, according to an October 1, 2026 report. That is not the official Halo: Campaign Evolved, which launched July 28, 2026. The official game supports Xbox Play Anywhere for eligible digital purchases, while the browser project is separate and its current availability is not established.

Can you play Halo in a browser?

PC Gamer reported that developer Mitchell Hynes created a browser-playable version of the original Halo: Combat Evolved using a decompilation effort. The report described mouse-and-keyboard play and multiplayer functionality. Hynes reportedly said the project had seen almost 20,000 games across 115 countries in its first five hours; that is an early usage figure attributed to the developer, not independently audited adoption data. PC Gamer’s October 1, 2026 report covers the project.

This browser project is independent and should not be confused with the official Halo: Campaign Evolved. The available reporting does not establish whether the browser build remains live, how reliably it works now, whether its multiplayer remains available, or what permissions its developer obtained. The report is not a legal ruling, so its description does not settle the project’s legal status.

What is Halo: Campaign Evolved?

Halo: Campaign Evolved is the official Halo release relevant to Xbox Play Anywhere. Xbox announced its July 28, 2026 launch for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud, Steam, and PlayStation 5. Xbox also announced day-one availability through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Those platform and subscription details describe the official game, not the browser project. How Xbox Play Anywhere applies to Halo

Xbox describes Play Anywhere as a way to play a supported game across Xbox consoles and Windows PCs using one eligible digital purchase. Halo Support specifies that the same Microsoft account is used. For Halo: Campaign Evolved, this cross-device access applies to digital purchases only. A physical copy—including the Collector’s Edition—works only on the platform for which it was purchased and does not grant access on the other supported platforms. The Halo Support editions page gives the title-specific distinction; Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere overview explains the program.

Xbox Wire described the Halo feature this way: “Play it on both console and PC at no additional cost with XBOX Play Anywhere.” That statement concerns playing the supported digital purchase on Xbox and PC; it does not mean that a purchase from Steam or PlayStation grants an Xbox Store entitlement.

Why Xbox Play Anywhere is being described as surging

Xbox’s own dated milestones show the catalog growing, but they do not establish a live total or explain what caused the expansion. Xbox Wire reported more than 1,000 Play Anywhere games in its August 28, 2025 update, then reported more than 1,500 games and 500 development teams in its March 11, 2026 GDC recap.

Xbox-reported milestone Date and source What it establishes
More than 1,000 games August 28, 2025; Xbox Wire August update A dated catalog count above 1,000.
More than 1,500 games and 500 development teams March 11, 2026; Xbox Wire GDC recap A later dated catalog count and team milestone.

The figures support saying that Play Anywhere expanded between those Xbox updates. They do not provide a precise growth rate, a current catalog count, or evidence for why the program grew.
