Make the application’s RTL locale and state explicit before the assertion: a screenshot checks rendered pixels, not whether your app selected the correct language or direction.
Set up an explicit RTL test scenario
Use the same locale, route, test data, viewport, and interaction state that you want to protect. Prefer your application’s real locale mechanism or test fixture; do not depend on a browser default to make the page right-to-left. The example route below is illustrative only—replace it with the route or setup your application actually uses.
Give each materially different state its own named baseline. For example, a default page and the same page with its navigation menu open should not share one screenshot expectation.
Capture and compare a screenshot
This Playwright Test example sets a fixed viewport, opens an illustrative Arabic-locale route, checks that the page is ready, and compares the rendered page with a named baseline:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('RTL landing page', async ({ page }) => {
await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
await page.goto('/?locale=ar');
// Replace this with an assertion for the application's RTL-ready state.
await expect(page.getByRole('main')).toBeVisible();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('landing-rtl.png');
});
On the first run, Playwright creates the reference screenshot; a missing reference is expected until that image exists. Review the generated baseline and commit it through your normal version-control review. Later runs compare the current capture with that reference. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation for the screenshot workflow and configuration details.
A visual match alone does not prove that the intended behavior occurred. Add ordinary assertions for relevant behavior—for example, that the menu opened or the expected localized text is present—so a pixel diff is not the only signal about what happened.

Choose RTL coverage that represents your interface
Decide which locale and interface states need independent expectations. Useful RTL-specific scenarios depend on your product, but may include navigation placement, text alignment, icon direction, form labels and controls, and mixed Arabic or Hebrew text with Latin text or numerals.
- Locale and state: Cover each supported RTL locale and distinct interactive state that should render differently.
- Viewport: Include the desktop, tablet, or mobile widths where your layout is expected to work.
- Browser and platform: Choose the environments that matter to your product, and plan to generate and compare their baselines consistently.
- Visual and semantic requirements: Use screenshots for appearance, and add interaction or accessibility assertions for behavior and structure.
Keep captures stable and baselines trustworthy
Match the baseline environment
Browser rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare baselines in the same environment where practical; otherwise, environment changes can create diffs unrelated to an RTL layout change. Playwright documents these sources of variability in its visual comparison guidance.

- Clear visuals. Fluid motion: A 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms MPRT deliver smooth, tear‑free motion across work, gaming, and streaming for clearer, more fluid viewing.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star* certification reduces harmful blue light while preserving stunning color quality without compromise. *TÜV Rheinland 3-star eye comfort certification.
- Wide viewing angle: Get consistent views across a wide 178° /178° viewing angle.
- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Stabilize application state
Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing the final capture with the expected image. That helps avoid capturing a render that is still changing, but it does not make your data or application state deterministic. Control test data and wait for the actual ready state your page requires.
Hover effects are included when present at capture time. If hover is not part of the scenario, move the pointer away from hover-styled elements before taking the screenshot. If a region is genuinely volatile, screenshot styling can hide it, but mask narrowly: hiding a region that is part of the behavior under test can conceal a regression.

- CURVED FOR ENHANCED ENGAGEMENT: An immersive viewing experience with a curved monitor that wraps more closely around your field of vision; It creates a wider view, enhancing depth perception and minimizing peripheral distraction
- SMOOTH PERFORMANCE FOR SEAMLESS CONTENT: Stay in the action when playing games, watching videos, or working on creative projects; The 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur so you don't miss a thing in fast-paced moments¹
- MORE GAMING POWER: Gain the edge with optimizable game settings; Color and image contrast can be adjusted to see scenes more vividly and spot enemies hiding in the dark; Game Mode adjusts any game to fill the screen so you can view every detail²
- KEEP IT EASY ON THE EYES: Care for your eyes and stay comfortable, even during long sessions; Advanced eye comfort technology certified by TÜV reduces eye strain by minimizing blue light and reducing irritating screen flicker²
- INCREASED VERSATILITY: Connect to more; Plug devices straight into your monitor for increased flexibility, making your computing environment even more convenient
Set diff tolerances deliberately
Playwright documents threshold as the acceptable perceived color difference per pixel; its documented default is 0.2. maxDiffPixels limits how many pixels may differ and is unset by default. Start with settings strict enough to reveal meaningful changes. Adjust them only after inspecting real diffs and understanding the rendering variation; do not increase tolerance just to make an unexplained failure pass.
For an intentional design change, update references with npx playwright test --update-snapshots, then inspect the changed images before accepting them. Updating a baseline changes the expectation; it does not establish that the new appearance is correct.

Check accessible structure separately
If the requirement includes accessible roles, names, or hierarchy, add an ARIA snapshot assertion alongside the visual check. Playwright’s ARIA snapshot matcher compares the current accessibility tree with a template; it complements a screenshot rather than replacing it. See the ARIA snapshots documentation. Screenshot assertions require the Playwright Test runner, as noted in the PageAssertions API documentation.
Troubleshoot common screenshot-test failures
- The first run reports a missing screenshot: This is normal before a reference exists. Review the generated image, then add it to version control.
- The page looks left-to-right despite an RTL test name: The test name does not set locale or direction. Use the application’s actual RTL locale setup and assert that the intended page state is ready before capture.
- A diff appears after a machine or browser change: Rendering can differ across hosts and browser configurations. Compare in a consistent environment and inspect the images before changing tolerances.
- The screenshot changes between captures: Control test data and wait for a stable application state. The consecutive-match wait does not remove arbitrary dynamic content.
- A screenshot changes when the pointer moves: Hover styling is part of the captured render. Move the pointer to a location that does not trigger hover styling when hover is outside the scenario.
- An update-snapshots run makes the test green but the page may be wrong: The command updates the reference only. Review the before-and-after images and confirm the intended RTL behavior independently.
- A visual test passes but accessible order or names are wrong: Pixel comparison does not assert accessibility-tree structure. Add an ARIA snapshot or other appropriate semantic assertion.

If you need a screenshot outside your Playwright visual-baseline workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-request API can capture a URL as an image or PDF; for example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture:
Quick Recap
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
