Use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion to compare each browser’s rendering with its own approved baseline. Configure Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit as separate projects, keep the environment and page state stable, and review image diffs before updating snapshots. These per-browser checks catch changes within each engine; they do not make the engines’ screenshots identical or replace a direct comparison of browser compatibility.

What “Chrome” means in a Playwright project

Playwright’s standard browser project is named chromium. It launches Playwright’s Chromium build, not branded Google Chrome by default. Firefox and WebKit projects likewise use Playwright browser builds rather than branded Firefox and Safari. If you specifically need to test a branded browser, treat that as a separate target and verify the available Playwright channel and environment for your setup.

Playwright documents that its Firefox build tracks recent Firefox Stable with Playwright patches. Its WebKit build derives from recent upstream WebKit and can include changes before they reach Safari or other WebKit browsers. Consequently, a passing WebKit screenshot test is evidence about that Playwright WebKit build in your test environment, not proof that the branded Safari app renders identically.

Configure Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit projects

In a Playwright Test configuration, declare one project for each engine. The same test file then runs under all three projects, while project names keep their screenshot references distinct.

import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';

export default defineConfig({
  testDir: './tests',
  projects: [
    { name: 'chromium', use: { browserName: 'chromium' } },
    { name: 'firefox', use: { browserName: 'firefox' } },
    { name: 'webkit', use: { browserName: 'webkit' } },
  ],
});

Install the Playwright browser builds required by your project using the installation instructions for your Playwright version. In CI, make sure the runner has those builds available and use a consistent image or operating-system setup for both baseline creation and comparison.

Write a visual regression test

Navigate to a deterministic page state, perform the interactions needed to reach the view you want to approve, and assert the screenshot. For example:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('checkout summary renders as approved', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('/checkout');
  await page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Order summary' }).waitFor();

  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('checkout-summary.png', {
    fullPage: true,
  });
});

On the first run, Playwright creates a reference screenshot. Review that image and commit it with the test if it represents the intended appearance. Later runs compare the actual screenshot to the reference and fail the assertion when differences exceed the configured tolerance. With multiple projects, Playwright uses project names in snapshot paths, so each browser gets its own reference rather than sharing one engine’s image.

Create or intentionally refresh references

Run the test for all configured projects to generate references for each. When an intended UI change causes failures, inspect the expected, actual, and diff images before refreshing anything. Use Playwright Test’s --update-snapshots option only after deciding the changed appearance is correct; review the resulting snapshot changes in code review like other test artifacts.

Keep baseline and comparison runs stable

Visual output can vary with the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, fonts, and other environmental factors. Microsoft Playwright’s visual-comparison guidance recommends running in the same environment used to generate the baseline. For reliable CI, keep the runner image, Playwright version, browser builds, viewport, device scale factor, and headless configuration aligned between baseline updates and ordinary test runs.

Control the page state

  • Use fixed test data and deterministic account or locale state.
  • Wait for the specific UI state you intend to capture rather than relying only on elapsed time.
  • Avoid taking the screenshot while data, transitions, carousels, timestamps, or asynchronous widgets are still changing.
  • Use screenshot styles to hide or normalize volatile regions when their content is not part of the behavior under test. Styles can also filter elements such as iframes.

Playwright screenshot assertions disable animations and hide the caret by default, which reduces two common sources of noise. Do not assume that this stabilizes every source of change: third-party content, time-dependent text, random IDs, and changing images may still need explicit control or masking.

Keep screenshot scale consistent

Playwright’s screenshot scale setting can use CSS pixels, producing one output pixel per CSS pixel, or device scale, producing one output pixel per device pixel. Device scale can create larger images on high-DPI contexts. Keep the scale and viewport consistent between baseline and comparison runs; otherwise, image dimensions and pixel-level differences may change even if the page’s CSS has not.

Choose tolerances without hiding regressions

Playwright offers a color-difference threshold and limits on the number or proportion of differing pixels. The documented default YIQ color-difference threshold is 0.2. A threshold controls how sensitive the comparison is to pixel color changes; maxDiffPixels and maxDiffPixelRatio cap the changed area allowed before the assertion fails.

await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('checkout-summary.png', {
  fullPage: true,
  threshold: 0.2,
  maxDiffPixelRatio: 0.01,
});

The example’s ratio is an explicit project choice, not a universal recommended value. Start with the default behavior, inspect representative diffs, and set limits based on the visual risk of the component. A generous tolerance can suppress harmless antialiasing noise, but it can also let real layout, color, or missing-content defects pass. Avoid increasing tolerance merely to turn a failing test green.

Distinguish cross-browser differences from regressions

There are two different questions to answer:

  • Regression: Did Chromium, Firefox, or WebKit change relative to that engine’s approved rendering? Compare each run with that project’s own baseline.
  • Compatibility: Do the browser engines render the same product view differently in ways users will notice? Compare the browser outputs to each other and investigate meaningful differences.

Separate baselines answer the first question; they do not by themselves answer the second. Different engines can legitimately differ in font rasterization, layout details, or native rendering behavior. If actual Safari behavior is important—for example, for Safari-specific capabilities—include testing in the branded Safari environment rather than treating Playwright WebKit as a complete substitute.

Troubleshoot common failures

Every run shows widespread pixel changes

Check whether the baseline and current run use the same operating system or CI image, Playwright version, browser build, viewport, device scale, and headless mode. Differences in fonts or rendering environment can alter many pixels at once. Restore a consistent environment before changing tolerances.

Only one project fails

Inspect that project’s actual and diff images. An engine-specific rendering difference may be expected, or the application may have a browser-specific defect. Do not copy another project’s baseline over it; each project represents a distinct rendering context.

The screenshot changes between identical code runs

Look for dynamic content, asynchronous loading, animation, blinking carets, timestamps, random data, and third-party widgets. Wait for a meaningful readiness condition, use stable fixtures, and hide or normalize only the regions that are irrelevant to the assertion.

A small-looking visual change fails the assertion

Open the diff image and determine whether the affected pixels represent a real issue, such as shifted text or a missing border, or harmless rendering noise. Then decide whether a narrowly chosen threshold or pixel limit is appropriate. Keep the default or current limit when the visual change is meaningful.

The baseline update produces unexpected files

Check which projects were run and inspect the project-specific snapshot paths. Multiple project references are expected because each browser should compare against its own approved image. Update only references whose changed appearance has been reviewed and accepted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Playwright compare PNG, JPEG, and WebP screenshot baselines?

The visual assertion workflow described here uses Playwright Test’s screenshot assertion and its generated snapshot references; this guide does not establish support for other file formats as baseline inputs.

Should I use a screenshot API instead of Playwright for browser compatibility tests?

No. A URL screenshot API is useful for hosted-page capture, but the workflow here depends on running the same test in Playwright’s browser projects and comparing each engine with its reviewed baseline.
