Use Playwright Test to capture a page at a defined tablet viewport, then compare each run with a reviewed reference screenshot. Choose a registered tablet preset when you want to emulate a particular device, or set the viewport dimensions directly when the goal is to test a responsive breakpoint. Keep the browser and rendering environment consistent so unrelated differences do not swamp the layout changes you want to catch.
Set up a tablet screenshot test in Playwright
Install Playwright Test in your project if it is not already present, then add a test that selects a tablet context, opens a stable route, and asserts its screenshot. This example uses the registered iPad (gen 7) preset; device names can differ by Playwright version, so check the registry for the version installed in your project.
import { test, expect, devices } from '@playwright/test';
test.use({ ...devices['iPad (gen 7)'] });
test('tablet landing page has the expected layout', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('tablet-landing.png');
});
Playwright’s emulation documentation explains device parameters and viewport overrides. The PageAssertions API documents screenshot assertion options.
Use a deliberate viewport for breakpoint coverage
A device label is not a substitute for knowing the dimensions being tested. If you want to test a specific responsive breakpoint, use a project or browser context with explicit viewport width and height. You can also override the viewport after applying device configuration. Record the dimensions and browser project alongside the test so the baseline represents the intended test target.

Choose the capture area
Use the default viewport screenshot when the visible tablet layout is the concern. Use a full-page screenshot if the entire document layout matters; use a component-level screenshot when you need a focused check. Full-page images can make diffs harder to diagnose when a small component change is what matters. Playwright supports viewport and full-page capture options in its screenshot assertion API.
Build and review the visual baseline
The first execution creates the reference image. Later executions compare the new capture with that baseline. Commit the snapshot with the test so changes are reviewable, and inspect the image diff before updating the reference. A changed image may be an intended redesign, a rendering variation, or a real regression; accept a new baseline only after deciding which it is.

- Define the target. Choose a device preset or explicit viewport dimensions and note the browser project.
- Stabilize the page. Use predictable test data and wait for meaningful page readiness rather than capturing while layout or content is still changing.
- Run the test to create the baseline. Review and commit the generated snapshot in the same environment used for future comparisons where practical.
- Inspect every diff. When a later run changes, decide whether the design change is intentional or a defect before updating the expected screenshot. Playwright documents baseline and snapshot-update workflows in its visual comparisons guide.
Make tablet screenshots stable enough to trust
Visual tests are sensitive to more than CSS. Playwright notes that browser rendering can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Run baseline generation and subsequent checks with the same browser and operating-system environment where practical; pinning the browser version and keeping CI settings consistent also helps isolate application changes from environment changes. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guidance.
Screenshot assertions wait for two consecutive captures to match before comparing the final capture with the expectation. This helps with transient rendering, but it does not make an unstable page deterministic. If ads, timestamps, rotating content, or other volatile regions cause noise, use Playwright’s documented stylesheet option to filter dynamic content. Avoid masking large areas: a mask that hides the very region where tablet layout can break weakens the test.

What a tablet screenshot test covers—and what it does not
A tablet screenshot test checks the rendered page at the browser context’s chosen dimensions and configuration. It is useful for catching visual shifts such as an unexpected navigation wrap, clipped content, or a changed column layout. Its result is tied to the viewport or preset, browser engine and version, operating system and rendering environment, and capture scope. A single preset therefore does not represent every tablet or every breakpoint.
Emulated device settings are sufficient for automated screenshot comparisons; a physical tablet is optional for manual checks and is not required to run this workflow. If your product supports several tablet widths, add deliberate viewport targets for the breakpoints you care about rather than treating one device profile as universal.

Common problems and fixes
- The device preset is undefined. The name may not exist in the installed Playwright version. Check that version’s device registry and use an available name, or set width and height explicitly.
- Snapshots change in CI but not locally. Compare browser version, operating system, headless mode, settings, and other rendering conditions. Generate and review baselines in the environment that will run the test when possible.
- The screenshot is captured before the page settles. Make test data predictable and wait for the page state that matters. The assertion’s consecutive-capture check cannot compensate for continuously changing content.
- Diffs contain timestamps, ads, or rotating content. Filter known dynamic content with a stylesheet, but keep the mask narrow enough that layout defects remain visible.
- The diff is too large to diagnose. Reduce the capture scope to the viewport or a relevant component unless full-document flow is what you are verifying.
- A snapshot update seems to fix the test. First inspect the image diff and confirm the UI change is intentional. Updating a baseline without review can bless a regression.

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; the API accepts common screenshot-API parameter names, which can make switching easier. Its clean-shot workflow accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step switchable. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. These are capture-service capabilities; they do not replace Playwright’s baseline-and-diff workflow for regression assertions.
For a quick capture, set a tablet viewport using the supported API parameters for your chosen dimensions. The following cURL request captures Stripe as a WebP image; replace the target URL with your own. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
