First determine whether the audio/video drift is already present in a local recording or appears only in YouTube playback, and whether the offset grows or stays roughly constant. A growing offset points to a timing or clock mismatch; a steady offset is usually a start-time alignment issue. Those cases need different fixes, so do not begin by adding a fixed delay.
Diagnose where and how the sync problem develops
Record or inspect output from the same setup that sends the stream. Compare synchronization near the beginning with synchronization later, and compare the local recording with YouTube playback. This separates a source or encoder timing problem from one that appears farther along the ingest and delivery path.
- Play the local recording with FFmpeg’s player and statistics enabled:
ffplay -stats path/to/local-recording. The displayed playback statistics include audio/video synchronization drift. Check near the start and again later. - If the local recording gradually drifts, investigate input timestamps, capture-device clocks, and audio resampling.
- If the local recording stays in sync but YouTube playback does not, check encoder output, YouTube ingest health, the archive, CPU load, and the outbound connection before changing audio timestamps.
- If the offset is approximately constant rather than increasing, investigate a measured start-time mismatch instead of treating it as progressive drift.
This comparison helps locate the problem, but it cannot identify a specific root cause without the FFmpeg command, input devices, and recording. FFmpeg’s resampler documentation and advanced options documentation explain the relevant timestamp controls.
Correct audio timing only when timestamps are a reliable reference
FFmpeg’s aresample filter can compensate for timestamp differences by filling or trimming samples, or by stretching or squeezing audio. With the swr resampler, async=1 enables filling and trimming; larger values set a maximum amount of sample stretching or squeezing per second. The default is zero, which means no compensation.

As a diagnostic trial, add this audio filter to the command that produces the stream or recording:
-af "aresample=async=1:first_pts=0"
This is not a universal drift fix. It can help only when the audio timestamps provide a meaningful reference to follow; it cannot make unrelated or unreliable device clocks agree. The first_pts=0 setting assumes the first audio presentation timestamp should be zero. Depending on the input, that can add initial silence or trim samples with negative timestamps. Check the start and later sections of a local recording, listen for artifacts, and remove or adjust the option if the start becomes wrong or the sound is damaged.

Use timestamp offsets for a fixed start-time mismatch
Do not use a fixed offset to chase an error that keeps growing. FFmpeg provides two distinct controls for aligning inputs at the start:
-itsoffsetadds a specified offset to the timestamps of an input. Use it only when you have measured how early or late that input starts.-isyncadjusts one input’s timestamps against a reference input’s start time. FFmpeg says the timestamp sources should derive from the same clock source for expected results.
In particular, -isync is not a cure for independent capture-device clocks that drift apart. A fixed offset may align the beginning while leaving the later stream out of sync.

Check the encoder and YouTube ingest path
When the local recording is synchronized but the YouTube stream is not, inspect both the encoder and YouTube’s Live Control Room rather than speculatively changing audio timestamps, codec, bitrate, or latency.
- Review the Live Control Room preview, stream-health indicator, and any messages about ingestion or audio/video settings.
- Check the stream directly in the encoder and inspect a local archive. Look for encoder errors and unusually high CPU load.
- If encoder output appears healthy, check the outbound internet connection.
- Verify that the encoder is using a currently accepted ingest format and audio/video configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS; its guidance also identifies incorrect stream format or audio settings as possible ingestion errors.
YouTube recommends representative tests: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” It also advises: “Continuously monitor streams for audio and video quality.” Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and stream health guidance and live-streaming troubleshooting guidance for current settings and Live Control Room messages.

Verify the repair before streaming an event
- Run a test with audio and movement representative of the actual stream.
- Keep the test running long enough to see whether the offset remains constant or grows.
- Review the local archive, then check YouTube playback and Live Control Room health messages.
- If drift returns, compare the same checkpoints again and note whether it first appears locally or only after ingest. That result determines whether to revisit source timing and resampling or investigate the encoder and delivery path.
Common symptoms and what to check
| What you observe | What it suggests | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The local recording drifts progressively. | Source timestamps, audio resampling, or clock mismatch may be involved. | Inspect the input timing and test aresample compensation only if timestamps are a useful reference. |
| The local recording is in sync, but YouTube playback drifts. | The issue may arise in encoder output, ingest, or delivery. | Check encoder errors, archive, CPU load, Live Control Room messages, and the outbound connection. |
| The offset is present from the start and stays roughly constant. | A start-time mismatch is more likely than progressive drift. | Measure the offset and consider -itsoffset; use -isync only when its shared-clock requirement is met. |
| Enabling resampling makes the opening audio worse. | first_pts=0 may not match the input’s initial timestamps. |
Remove or tune the setting, then inspect the opening and later audio again. |
| YouTube reports an ingest or audio/video settings error. | The configured stream format or audio settings may be incorrect. | Match the current YouTube ingest guidance and resolve the specific Live Control Room message. |
