Neither approach guarantees uninterrupted viewer playback, and a supervisor may not detect a process that is alive but stalled.
Choose the recovery method for the failure
First determine what “disconnects” means in the FFmpeg log and process state. A temporary publishing failure with FFmpeg still running calls for output recovery inside FFmpeg. If FFmpeg has terminated, it needs an external supervisor configured to restart failed processes.
| Approach | What it handles | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg FIFO muxer output recovery | Temporary output or network failures while FFmpeg continues processing | Does not relaunch an exited process; it does not guarantee recovery from every failure or uninterrupted viewer playback. |
| External process supervisor | Relaunching FFmpeg after it exits, according to the supervisor’s restart policy | May not detect a process that remains alive but has stalled unless a separate health check is configured. Supervisor setup depends on the deployment. |
These layers can be combined: FIFO recovery for temporary output errors and a supervisor for process exits. The FFmpeg documentation supports the FIFO output-recovery example; it does not specify a supervisor configuration or establish a universal health check.
Configure FFmpeg to recover from temporary RTMP output failures
FFmpeg’s official FIFO muxer documentation provides this example for streaming to an RTMP server while continuing real-time processing during a temporary network failure and attempting recovery every second:

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v -map 0:a rtmp://example.com/live/stream_name
This is a pattern to adapt, not a drop-in production command. Replace INPUT, the encoding and stream mapping choices, and the example destination with values for your workflow. Obtain the current ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room; use a placeholder in scripts you share or publish, and keep the actual key private.
What the options do in this pattern
-f fifoselects FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer;-fifo_format flvspecifies FLV as the underlying output format.-attempt_recovery 1enables attempts to recover after an output failure, and-recovery_wait_time 1sets the wait between attempts to one second in the documented example.-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1is part of the documented example. The documentation describes continuing real-time processing and attempting recovery; it does not promise that every frame will be preserved.
Check the installed FFmpeg build and its matching documentation before relying on these options or their behavior. Recovery attempts do not guarantee that YouTube accepts the reconnect, that the live event remains continuous, or that viewers see a seamless transition.

Restart FFmpeg if the process exits
FIFO output recovery operates inside the running FFmpeg process. If FFmpeg exits, configure an external process supervisor to launch it again under the restart policy you choose. The appropriate configuration is specific to the operating system and supervisor; the documentation cited here does not define a systemd unit or another supervisor’s syntax.
Consider separately how your deployment will detect a process that is still running but no longer making progress. A basic restart-on-exit policy may not catch that condition; a health check or watchdog is a separate, implementation-specific layer. Confirm behavior with the supervisor and FFmpeg logs rather than assuming a live process is publishing successfully.

Check YouTube’s ingest settings and RTMPS connection
Confirm the URL and stream key
YouTube’s encoder setup calls for entering the Live Control Room server URL and stream key in the encoder. The YouTube Live API also exposes primary and backup ingest addresses, including primary and backup RTMPS addresses. YouTube describes the backup address as an option for simultaneously sending the content; it is not, by itself, a process-restart instruction.
Use the endpoint and key currently shown for your stream. Do not publish a live stream key in a public script, issue, or example: it is a credential used by the encoder.

For RTMPS connection or SSL errors
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Check that the URL uses the RTMPS protocol and the correct server endpoint. For relevant SSL errors, YouTube recommends specifying port 443; for connection timeouts, it advises checking the server URL and whether the encoder supports RTMPS. These checks address connection setup, not automatic restarting.
Troubleshoot a YouTube stream that stops publishing
- Check whether FFmpeg exited. Read the log and inspect the process. If it ended, review the supervisor’s restart policy and its logs. If FFmpeg remains running and reports a temporary output failure, check whether the FIFO recovery options are supported and configured as intended.
- Verify the destination credentials. Confirm the current server URL and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room, then confirm that FFmpeg is publishing to the intended endpoint with the correct key.
- Check RTMPS details if applicable. For an SSL error, verify the RTMPS protocol and server and consider YouTube’s port 443 guidance. For a timeout, verify the URL and RTMPS support in the encoder.
- Separate input problems from output problems. FFmpeg’s HTTP
-reconnectoptions concern the HTTP protocol implementation. They are not a general fix for an RTMP output disconnect, and they will not relaunch a terminated FFmpeg process. Use FIFO output recovery for the documented RTMP case and a supervisor for process exits. - Inspect Live Control Room after a restart. Check the stream’s actual state rather than assuming a restarted encoder has resumed the same live event. YouTube’s setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and describes ending a stream by stopping encoder output; it does not establish that restarting the publisher preserves broadcast continuity.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an FFmpeg process to supervise on your own computer. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
