What Browserbase MCP can do
Browserbase describes its MCP server as cloud browser automation using Browserbase and Stagehand. Its product overview mentions screenshot capture, but the current setup page lists six tools—start, end, navigate, act, observe, and extract—and does not name a dedicated screenshot tool. The v3 release notes say browserbase_screenshot was removed. So the product’s general screenshot capability does not establish a current MCP screenshot command. Connect an MCP client to Browserbase
Use the hosted Streamable HTTP server
Browserbase recommends its hosted Streamable HTTP option for most users. Configure your MCP client with the endpoint https://mcp.browserbase.com/mcp and supply an API key from the Browserbase Dashboard. Prefer an authorization header when your client supports it:
Authorization: Bearer YOUR_BROWSERBASE_API_KEYThe setup documentation also accepts x-bb-api-key as a header. It retains the browserbaseApiKey query parameter for compatibility with clients that cannot set headers, but marks that method deprecated. Use the current header method where possible; avoid placing a secret in a URL unless your client requires it.

Reload and inspect the available tools
- Save the server entry in your MCP client using the hosted endpoint and API-key authentication format supported by that client.
- Refresh or reload the MCP connection so the client fetches the server’s current tool list.
- Confirm the tools shown by the client. The current setup documentation names
start,end,navigate,act,observe, andextract. - If the client shows a screenshot tool, inspect its actual input schema and server version before asking the agent to call it. Do not assume the old
browserbase_screenshotname still works.
Ask the agent to navigate to the page
Once connected, ask the agent to start or reuse a browser session and navigate to the target URL with the current navigate capability. For example: “Open https://example.com and tell me when the page has loaded.” The exact tool arguments depend on the schema exposed by the connected server, so use the client’s tool description rather than copying arguments from an outdated example.
Verify screenshot support before requesting an image
After navigation, inspect the client’s live tool list for a screenshot or capture operation. The reviewed current setup documentation does not list one, and the v3 release notes explicitly record removal of browserbase_screenshot. Although Browserbase’s overview broadly describes screenshot capability, the available sources do not establish a replacement MCP tool name, input schema, or invocation. If no current screenshot tool appears, the agent cannot be expected to produce a screenshot through that documented MCP toolset. Check the documentation for the exact deployed server version rather than trying the removed tool name.

Both approaches still depend on the tools exposed by the server version you run; choosing a transport does not restore a removed screenshot tool.
Troubleshooting Browserbase MCP
- The client cannot connect: confirm the hosted endpoint is exactly
https://mcp.browserbase.com/mcp, then check that the client supports the documented Streamable HTTP transport. - Authentication fails: obtain a valid Browserbase API key from the Dashboard and pass it using
Authorization: Bearer YOUR_BROWSERBASE_API_KEYor the documentedx-bb-api-keyheader. Use the deprecated query-parameter fallback only if the client cannot set headers. - The expected tool is missing: refresh the MCP connection and inspect its current tool list. The setup page names six tools and no dedicated screenshot tool; the v3 notes say
browserbase_screenshotwas removed. - The agent navigates but returns no image: navigation is not proof that screenshot capture is exposed. Check the live tool list and schema for a screenshot operation before asking the agent to call one.
