YouTube must allow Supers for the channel and stream; an OBS overlay cannot bypass YouTube’s eligibility rules.
Before you set up the alert
Check eligibility in YouTube Studio first. Super Chat and other Supers depend on YouTube’s availability and policy requirements for your location and channel. YouTube says Supers are unavailable for age-restricted, unlisted, private, or made-for-kids videos, and YouTube Giving fundraisers. They are also unavailable when live chat or comments are turned off. Review YouTube’s current Super Chat and Super Stickers eligibility requirements, since availability and rules can change.
These checks apply to the YouTube channel and stream independently of the alert provider. A correctly configured Browser Source can display an alert only when YouTube permits the Super Chat in the first place.

Confirm the stream’s YouTube settings
In YouTube Studio, check that the channel has access to Supers and that the stream’s visibility, audience setting, and live chat allow Super Chat. Make these checks for the specific stream, not just the channel in general.

Connect YouTube and configure the overlay
In StreamElements, connect the YouTube account and create or select a YouTube overlay/theme. Open the AlertBox settings. If you want only Super Chat popups, leave SuperChat enabled and turn off the other event types. StreamElements documents this workflow in its YouTube SE.Live setup guide.

Copy the overlay URL
Copy the overlay URL provided by StreamElements. Treat it as a private link: anyone with access to it may be able to view or use the overlay.

Add it to the OBS scene used for the loop
In OBS, select the scene that carries your looping video. Under Sources, select +, choose Browser, and create a new source. Paste the overlay URL into its URL field and set the width and height to match your stream canvas. StreamElements uses 1920×1080 as an example, not a universal requirement; use your actual canvas dimensions if they differ.
Make sure the Browser Source is visible and sits above the video source in the scene’s source order so the alert appears on top of the video.

Test the overlay before going live
Check that the source is visible and correctly positioned, and use the provider’s test alert if available. If an alert does not appear, verify the overlay URL, whether alerts are paused or muted, and that the Browser Source is enabled and above the video. StreamElements lists these checks in its setup and troubleshooting guide.
OBS itself does not provide stream alerts; the alert is a third-party overlay rendered in a Browser Source. The OBS Project explains this in its alert setup FAQ.

Standard OBS or StreamElements SE.Live?
You can use a provider’s overlay in standard OBS, or follow StreamElements’ SE.Live add-on workflow. Choose based on whether you want to add a separate Browser Source yourself or use the add-on integration. StreamElements’ guide, dated May 8, 2025, specifies OBS v31.x or newer for its SE.Live instructions. That version requirement applies to the add-on workflow; the OBS Project’s general Browser Source alert guidance does not state the same minimum version.

Place the alert Browser Source in the same OBS scene as the looping video and test the composition before you start the broadcast. The overlay instructions do not configure the video loop itself, and they do not establish that every looping-stream arrangement handles alerts identically. Avoid changing loop settings as part of alert setup unless you have separate, reliable instructions for your specific source and OBS configuration.

Do not confuse an alert overlay with YouTube’s “Overlay for breaks” feature. That feature is for breaks and does not create Super Chat notifications; see YouTube’s break overlay instructions.
