A focused preview of a site’s recognizable header, hero image, or app screen usually works better at small sizes than shrinking an entire long page. Capture a few sites manually; use a screenshot API when you want repeatable capture across many URLs.
Choose what each bookmark card should show
Start with the card, not the screenshot. Decide its aspect ratio and what visual detail will identify the page when the thumbnail is small: a logo and header, a hero image, a document title, or the visible state of an application. Keep the target composition consistent across bookmarks so the page feels deliberate.
A full-page image can be useful when the page’s overall layout matters, but reducing a long page to card size often makes every detail illegible. A consistent viewport and a deliberate crop usually preserve a recognizable page identity better. Pick a capture method

Make thumbnails manually for a small bookmarks page
- Set the card dimensions. Choose the final aspect ratio and display size in your page design before capturing. This makes it easier to frame the same kind of content for every bookmark.
- Open each bookmarked page at a consistent browser size. Use the same approximate viewport for each capture. Scroll or adjust the page only when the intended preview is not in the initial view.
- Wait for the page to settle. Let the useful content, fonts, and prominent images appear. Check that a cookie banner, newsletter popup, chat widget, or loading state is not covering the part you want.
- Capture the visible area. Use your operating system’s or browser’s screenshot function. If the page needs an interaction first, perform it before capturing; note that a logged-in or personalized state may not be appropriate to share publicly.
- Crop and resize a copy. Preserve the original screenshot until you have checked the small version. Crop around the meaningful region, then export a derivative at the dimensions and image format your bookmarks page uses.
- Save and review it in context. Store the image with the bookmarks page’s assets and inspect it at its actual card size. If the site’s appearance changes or the image becomes misleading, capture and replace it.
Automate capture when the list grows
A screenshot API takes a target URL and capture options, then returns an image or a reference to one. Depending on the service, options may include viewport size, full-page or element capture, device emulation, dark mode, output format, and cookie-banner handling. Capture lists those capabilities for its core APIs: Capture API overview. For pages requiring multiple actions or browser state, a single-request API may not be sufficient.
For example, OpenGraph.io documents a screenshot endpoint that accepts a URL-encoded target and an API key. Its documentation lists JPEG, PNG, and WebP output, full-page capture, selector and exclusion options, dark mode, cache behavior, and cookie-banner handling. It also documents a capture_delay from 0 to 10,000 ms and navigation timeouts from 1,000 to 60,000 ms. Its md viewport preset is documented as 1366 × 768, with xs, sm, and lg also listed. Delay and timeout controls help manage capture timing, but a fixed delay cannot guarantee that every site’s client-rendered content, fonts, or lazy images are ready. Test representative pages and inspect the source images before creating small derivatives. For pages you control, a known visual readiness condition is preferable to guessing from elapsed time when your capture tool supports it.

Prepare and save thumbnails reliably
Check the image before making the card derivative
- Confirm the intended content rendered, rather than a blank page, loading screen, consent overlay, or bot check.
- Check whether lazy-loaded images or client-rendered sections are missing. A page may need more time, scrolling, or a different readiness condition.
- Keep a larger source image if you may need to diagnose a failed widget, incomplete hero, or other capture problem later.
Store the image and decide when to refresh
Save generated images somewhere suitable for the bookmarks page rather than assuming a screenshot URL will remain available indefinitely. Set a refresh policy that matches the page’s volatility and your expectations: update after a relevant content change, on a chosen interval, or when someone requests a refresh. Avoid recapturing unchanged pages without a reason.
Retention is service-specific. OpenGraph.io says its generated screenshot URLs expire after 24 hours, so download or cache images you need to keep: OpenGraph.io Screenshot API documentation. That expiry should not be generalized to other services.

Protect the capture workflow
If other people can submit URLs to your application, validate the destinations and apply abuse controls before sending capture requests. Keep API keys on a server rather than exposing them in browser code. Should I screenshot the whole website or just the first screen?
For a small bookmark card, capture the viewport or a selected region that keeps the page recognizable. Use a full-page capture only when the overall page layout itself is what you want to preview.

How do I keep bookmark thumbnails current?
Record when each image was captured and refresh it when the source changes, on a schedule that suits your page, or when requested. Store the resulting image if it needs to outlast the screenshot service’s URL retention period.
Can I use the same thumbnail for every screen size?
You can, but check the crop at each card size. A single carefully composed image may work across layouts; substantially different card shapes may need separate crops from the same larger source.
