Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUsually, restarting a stream does not itself cancel channel memberships—but YouTube does not promise that earnings will continue uninterrupted or that the restarted feed will remain in the same live session. A membership belongs to the channel; a live stream is a separate broadcast session. Check Live Control Room and your channel’s reporting after reconnecting rather than assuming either that the session continued or that a payout was unaffected.
Memberships and the live session are separate
YouTube Help says viewers can buy a channel membership while watching a live stream, and its live-stream settings guidance describes memberships as a channel feature available to eligible channels. That supports an important distinction: a broadcast interruption is not described as canceling channel memberships. Existing membership status is not the same thing as the state of one particular live session.
However, YouTube’s cited guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted membership earnings during a restart, explain payout treatment for every restart scenario, or promise that reconnecting preserves the original session or watch page. Do not infer a specific revenue outcome from the fact that memberships are a channel feature.
What kind of restart happened?
You restarted only the encoder
An encoder sends the broadcast to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key. If you stopped and restarted the encoder, check Live Control Room and the public watch page to confirm whether YouTube shows the feed as live and whether viewers can reach the intended stream. The encoder instructions explain how to start and end a stream, but do not say every encoder restart preserves the same watch page or session.

You ended the YouTube stream, then started another
Ending the feed in YouTube’s live controls is different from briefly reconnecting an encoder. Once you start another broadcast, verify its status and viewing link instead of assuming the previous live session resumed. YouTube’s instructions do not establish a universal rule for how a particular ended-and-restarted broadcast affects membership revenue.
What to check after reconnecting
- Confirm the live state. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and verify that the broadcast is live and that the encoder connection is healthy.
- Check the viewer experience. Open the public watch page and confirm it loads and shows the current broadcast. Do not rely on the prior page or session continuing without checking.
- Review your channel’s own data. Check membership and revenue reporting in YouTube Studio for what happened on your channel. The official guidance cited here does not promise a particular reporting or payout result for an individual restart.
- If the feed keeps dropping, troubleshoot the connection. YouTube says connectivity disruptions can break a stream. Follow its encoder and outbound-network troubleshooting guidance and make sure the connection has adequate upload bandwidth and reliability.
Archive and DVR limits are separate from memberships
YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its DVR guidance warns that DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. A 24/7 broadcast should therefore not be treated as one guaranteed, uninterrupted archived playback. These playback and archive limits do not determine whether memberships continue earning.

Keeping a 24/7 stream online
You can run a broadcast through your own encoder and network, but interruptions remain possible if connectivity fails. YouTube recommends a reliable network and adequate outbound bandwidth; its troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking that the encoder is working and testing connection strength. A hardware encoder may suit a higher-production event, but YouTube’s guidance does not make one a requirement for every stream or say that hardware guarantees uptime or membership income.
