One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo keep a website’s header and hero section visible in a thumbnail, compose the capture for the thumbnail’s final shape: set a useful browser viewport, then capture that viewport or crop to a specific element or region. Resize proportionally and check the result at its actual display size. There is no universal thumbnail size or crop position; the right dimensions depend on where the image will appear and how the page lays out.
Choose the thumbnail shape before you capture
Start with the destination card or thumbnail. Find its required pixel dimensions and aspect ratio, then decide how much of the page needs to fit. A very wide, shallow card may show the navigation and only the top of the hero; a taller frame can include more hero content. The sources document ways to set capture dimensions and crop regions, but do not establish a universal size for website thumbnails.
Plan around the page as it renders at the chosen width. Responsive navigation may collapse, the hero may reflow, and text or imagery may shift when the viewport changes. The capture viewport is therefore part of the composition, not just a technical setting.
Pick the right capture method
| Method | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport capture | The browser view can include the full header and the part of the hero you want. | Simple framing, but the chosen height may include extra page content or cut off lower hero details. |
| Element or coordinate-region capture | The target section or desired composition has a known selector or position. | More control, but selectors and coordinates must match the page’s rendered layout. |
| Full-page capture followed by a crop | You need a record of the entire page or cannot directly capture the desired area. | Useful for archiving, but a second crop is usually needed to produce a compact thumbnail. |
The capture-website project documents viewport width and height, full-page capture, and coordinate-based clipping. Its clip option cannot be combined with either an element capture or full-page mode. OpenGraph.io’s screenshot API documentation describes dimensions, full-page capture, element selectors, and selectors for excluding content.

Capture and crop the header and hero
- Set the target dimensions. Use the aspect ratio and size required by the destination. Do not stretch the screenshot to fit; a distorted header or hero is harder to recognize.
- Choose a viewport width. Set it so the page uses the layout you want, including the desired navigation and hero arrangement. Capture-website documents
widthandheightsettings for this purpose. - Check whether the viewport contains both sections. If it does, use a viewport capture. If the header and hero do not fit together, adjust the viewport height or use an element or coordinate-region capture.
- Position the crop deliberately. Keep the entire header and enough of the hero to communicate the page’s design. Shopify’s CropRegion documentation lists top, bottom, center, left, right, and explicit-region crop options. A top-oriented crop can help retain the header, but confirm the hero remains inside the crop.
- Resize proportionally and inspect at display size. Wagtail’s 6.0.2 image documentation describes focal-point-aware cropping and preserving image proportions rather than deforming them. View the finished thumbnail at the size readers will see; revise the crop if either section disappears or becomes too small to recognize.
When a full-page screenshot is the wrong starting point
Full-page capture records the scrollable page, which can be useful for documentation or an archive. A long image reduced into a small card, however, can make the header and hero occupy only a small part of the thumbnail. For a compact preview, use a viewport, element, or region capture when the chosen tool supports it, or crop the full-page image afterward. With capture-website, clip and fullPage are mutually exclusive.
Or skip the browser setup
