For a long video you plan to loop on YouTube, start with a HandBrake Creator or web preset, then use Constant Quality if you care more about consistent visual quality than hitting an exact file size. Test a representative section before encoding the full video: there is no single RF value that suits every source. HandBrake compresses the saved file; a separate live encoder handles YouTube’s stream bitrate, keyframes, and connection requirements.

Recommended HandBrake workflow

HandBrake’s Creator presets are designed for web hosting services such as YouTube. A Fast 1080p30 preset can be a broadly compatible starting point, but do not let it silently change a source that has a different resolution or frame rate. Review the preset’s changes before encoding. HandBrake’s preset guidance is at Official presets.

  1. Open the source and choose a web-oriented preset. Start with a Creator/web preset appropriate to your intended output. Check the Summary and Video settings for resolution, frame rate, encoder, and filters; preserve the source’s actual dimensions and motion unless you have a reason to alter them.
  2. Choose the rate-control mode on the Video tab. For visual quality without a precise file-size target, choose Constant Quality. HandBrake recommends it unless a target size is genuinely necessary. For a target average bitrate or size, choose Average Bitrate instead; HandBrake recommends multipass for this mode, which can take up to twice as long. See Constant Quality vs Average Bit Rate.
  3. Begin with the encoder’s default or a neutral speed preset. The speed preset shifts the balance among encoding time, quality, and file size. Slower settings may make sense for an offline encode when time is available, but there is no universally correct speed setting for every computer and source. Change it only after a short test shows a useful improvement.
  4. Keep the source frame rate unless conversion is intentional. HandBrake’s Same as Source/VFR behavior preserves variable frame rate; choose Constant Frame Rate only when you specifically need constant output timing. The frame-rate documentation is marked draft, so confirm labels in your installed HandBrake version: Frame rate.
  5. Encode and inspect a representative segment. Include detailed scenes and motion, then check both image quality and resulting size. Use this test to decide whether to change quality or output resolution before committing to the full runtime.
  6. Lower resolution only if the detail loss is acceptable. A smaller frame generally takes less space and processing, but removes image detail. Do not downscale a source solely to chase a smaller file if the result no longer looks right for the channel.

HandBrake’s quality guidance explains why a specific RF value cannot be prescribed without knowing the source and quality threshold: Adjusting quality. No particular RF value or output size is guaranteed for an unspecified video.

Constant Quality or Average Bitrate?

Mode Use it when What to expect
Constant Quality You want a chosen visual-quality level and do not need an exact output size. HandBrake varies bitrate with the content; file size depends on the source and quality setting.
Average Bitrate You need an average bitrate or a size target matters more than encoding speed. Targets a selected average bitrate. HandBrake recommends multipass, which may take up to twice as long.

These modes describe the saved-file encode. They are not the live-stream bitrate setting. The distinction matters because compressing a source file and sending a real-time stream to YouTube are separate jobs.

Set the live encoder separately for YouTube

When software or a cloud service sends the loop to YouTube over RTMP/RTMPS, configure that live encoder according to YouTube’s ingest guidance. YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, with no interval over 4 seconds. Choose bitrate according to the actual live output resolution, frame rate, and ingest codec—not the HandBrake RF setting or the compressed file’s average bitrate.

H.264 live output YouTube recommended bitrate YouTube minimum bitrate
1080p30 14 Mbps 5 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p30 or 720p60 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
480p30 4 Mbps recommended; minimum not stated here not stated here

These are YouTube’s published live-ingest recommendations and minimums for H.264, checked October 3, 2026; they are not HandBrake output targets. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, with separate bitrate guidance by codec. Its other stated recommendations include up to 60 fps, progressive scan, square pixels, AAC or MP3 audio, stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings before configuring your encoder, since recommendations and labels can change.

Common problems and fixes

  • The finished file is larger than expected: Constant Quality does not target a fixed size. Test a higher RF value or reduce resolution only if the resulting quality remains acceptable; inspect the result rather than assuming a size based on duration.
  • The picture looks soft or loses detail: Avoid unnecessary downscaling and compare a detailed test segment. Restore source resolution if the smaller output is visibly inadequate.
  • The encode takes too long: Encoder speed presets trade time against compression behavior. Return to the default or choose a faster preset, then compare a short test for acceptable quality and size.
  • The stream buffers or reports poor health despite a good file: Check the live encoder’s bitrate against YouTube’s guidance and the upload connection’s reliable capacity. A HandBrake quality value does not set the live bitrate; monitor YouTube stream health while testing.
  • Motion or timing looks wrong: Preserve the source frame rate unless conversion is needed. If constant output is required, select Constant Frame Rate intentionally and verify the resulting playback.
  • YouTube interrupts or rejects a loop: Check the live encoder connection and stream health, and confirm you have the rights to every video and audio element. A successful HandBrake encode does not grant permission to rebroadcast copyrighted material or guarantee compliance with YouTube policies.

Prepare the source and channel for a long-running loop

Keep an original copy of the video before experimenting with compression. For a continuous channel, check the encoded file from beginning to end for unintended blank frames, abrupt audio changes, or a loop point that is distracting. YouTube’s copyright rules still apply to a pre-recorded video sent as live content, and eligibility or monetization decisions are separate from whether the stream technically works. Review YouTube’s applicable Community Guidelines and copyright information before using material you did not create or license.

Or let it run in the cloud

HandBrake prepares the video file; it does not keep a YouTube live stream running. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. See StreamNeo.
