To check whether a video is ready for a 24/7 YouTube stream, inspect the file’s actual audio and video streams, decode and watch or listen to the entire recording, test its end-to-start loop in the exact playout setup you plan to use, and verify the live preview in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. A metadata scan can reveal technical problems, but it cannot prove that a file will loop cleanly or stay on air for 24 hours.
What “ready” means for a continuous stream
A file can have a familiar extension and still be missing audio, use unexpected codecs, contain damaged sections, or pause when it reaches the end. Readiness has two parts: the media must play correctly, and the complete playback-to-YouTube path must behave correctly.
- File integrity: the container and streams can be read and decoded from beginning to end.
- Content quality: picture and sound are as intended, including during transitions.
- Live compatibility: the playout application and encoder send YouTube a stream using supported settings.
- Continuity: the file loops as expected and the playback process, connection, and stream remain stable.
There is no universal automated “24/7 ready” pass threshold. You need to test the actual file in the actual playout and streaming setup.
1. Inspect the file’s streams and metadata
Do not rely on the filename extension alone. A media probe such as FFprobe can report the container, duration, and information about each video and audio stream. FFprobe’s documentation describes its use for displaying multimedia stream and format information: FFprobe documentation.

For a local file, a basic command is:
ffprobe -hide_banner -i "your-video-file.mp4"
Review the reported format and duration, then check every stream. Confirm that the file contains the intended video and any required audio, and that its dimensions, frame rate, audio sample rate, and channel layout make sense for your program. If FFprobe reports an error, an unexpected stream, or an implausible duration, investigate before scheduling the stream.
This is an inspection, not a complete integrity test: a file can report plausible metadata and still fail partway through playback.
2. Decode and review the entire recording
Play the whole file in a trusted media player or decode it from beginning to end. Testing only the first frame or a short opening segment can miss damage later in the recording.

- Watch for corrupted frames, black gaps, freezes, accidental cuts, and aspect-ratio or scaling problems.
- Listen for unintended silence, distortion, clipping, abrupt edits, or audio that drifts out of sync.
- Check the beginning and end specifically: some players behave differently at the file boundary than during ordinary playback.
- Confirm that the audio track you expect is actually selected and audible.
If the file fails to decode or contains a defect, repair or export a corrected version, then repeat the full-file check on that exact version.

A continuous YouTube stream often depends on a player or automation system repeating prerecorded material. The looping behavior belongs to that software, not to the media file by itself, so test in the application you will actually use.
- Load the exact file you inspected into the intended player or playout application.
- Enable its repeat or playlist-loop setting, if needed.
- Watch and listen through the final seconds, the transition, and the next opening. Repeat the boundary several times.
- Look for a blank interval, stuck frame, pause, audio pop, sudden silence, or an unintended change in volume or picture.
- If you use a playlist, test transitions between every adjacent item as well as the final-to-first transition.
A loop that works in a desktop media player may not behave identically in a separate encoder or automation tool. Test the application that will feed the live encoder.

4. Match the outgoing live feed to YouTube’s guidance
The file’s properties and the encoder’s live output are related but not interchangeable. YouTube’s live encoder guidance covers ingestion settings; its separate upload-encoding recommendations are for uploading videos and should not be substituted for live-stream settings.
YouTube’s current live guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video ingestion, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. The recommended keyframe interval is two seconds, and YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and check the current table when configuring your encoder, since recommendations can change.

Examples of H.264 live encoder recommendations
The figures below are YouTube Help’s live encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026. They are not file-corruption thresholds or proof that a file will loop successfully.

| Live output format | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
Use the row for the intended live output and verify the matching codec, resolution, and frame-rate entry in YouTube’s current live settings table. YouTube’s separate SDR H.264 upload guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends 8 Mbps for 1080p at standard frame rates (24/25/30 fps) and 12 Mbps at high frame rates (48/50/60 fps). Those upload figures describe a different workflow, not live ingestion or file readability; see YouTube’s video upload encoding settings.
Other settings worth checking
- Use CBR for the live encoder output.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval where possible; do not exceed four seconds.
- Use AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube supports 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS only with AAC.
- YouTube’s advanced recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Its guidance specifies 44.1 kHz stereo audio, or 48 kHz for 5.1.
- Make sure the available upload bandwidth can sustain the configured stream. A file that plays locally does not guarantee that your internet connection can transmit it steadily.
Do not re-encode a source file merely because its bitrate differs from a live encoder recommendation. The encoder’s outgoing feed is what must be configured to match the live guidance; bitrate recommendations do not diagnose whether the source file is damaged.
5. Run a private or unlisted live test
Before the full run, send the exact playout output to YouTube and inspect the Live Control Room preview. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Its live encoder guidance also provides the relevant setup context.

Fix preview or stream-health problems before launching the continuous broadcast. Keep the test representative: a still image or silent segment cannot reveal issues that occur with motion or sound.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Rehearse the long run
A short preview verifies only a short preview. Where practical, conduct an extended rehearsal that reaches at least one file loop. Confirm that the playout process continues, the loop boundary is clean, the source remains accessible, and power and network connectivity stay stable. This is an operational precaution for a 24/7 use case, not a duration YouTube mandates.
After launch, continue monitoring picture and sound and check the stream’s availability through its watch page. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends testing before a stream, and its live streaming tips include operational advice for broadcasts.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFprobe cannot identify the file or reports errors | The container or one of its streams may be unreadable or damaged. | Try opening and fully decoding the file; if it fails, make a corrected export and inspect that version. |
| Picture plays, but there is no sound | The file may lack an audio stream, or the playout application may have selected the wrong track. | Inspect the audio streams, select the intended track, and confirm audible sound in the live preview. |
| Playback pauses or flashes at the loop boundary | The player or playlist may insert a gap or handle repeat transitions differently. | Test the end-to-start transition repeatedly in the actual playout application and adjust its loop or playlist setup. |
| YouTube preview has unstable picture or sound | Check encoder settings, the selected audio, and whether the connection can sustain the outgoing bitrate. | Compare the live output with YouTube’s current ingestion guidance, then run another representative test. |
| The live event is not visible where expected | The event’s visibility or watch-page availability may not match the intended test or launch. | Check the event and its visibility in YouTube Studio, then verify the channel/watch page and a mobile view. |
Copyright and channel-policy checks still matter
Technical readiness does not grant the right to broadcast the material. Before scheduling a long stream, confirm that you have the necessary rights for the video and every included music or audio track, and review YouTube’s rules for live streaming and reused content. A technically valid file can still be blocked, claimed, or create channel-policy problems. For a practical preflight, use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist; it does not replace YouTube’s policies or legal advice.
