Use H.264 High Profile if you want to follow YouTube’s general recommendation for pre-recorded uploads. YouTube’s upload guidance names High; it does not list Main as an equal alternative. That is a recommendation, not a claim that a Main-profile file cannot be uploaded. The guidance does not compare the profiles’ compatibility across devices or editing software.
High vs. Main: which profile should you choose?

If you are choosing specifically to match YouTube’s stated general upload recommendation, select High. If your export preset only offers Main, the cited guidance does not guarantee whether that particular file will process; test the export or consult your editing software’s format documentation.
Recommended settings for a pre-recorded upload
YouTube’s general upload recommendations specify the following settings. They concern uploaded videos, not live-stream ingestion.
- Container: MP4, with no edit lists and the moov atom at the beginning of the file (“Fast Start”).
- Video codec and profile: H.264 High Profile.
- Scan and frame structure: progressive scan, two consecutive B frames, and a closed GOP with GOP length equal to half the frame rate.
- Entropy coding and chroma: CABAC and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling.
- Bitrate mode: variable bitrate (VBR). YouTube says no bitrate limit is required and supplies recommended rates as references.
- Frame rate: encode and upload at the rate used to record the video. YouTube lists 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps as common rates; other rates are acceptable.
- SDR color: BT.709.
- Audio: AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio at 48 kHz; channel configuration depends on the audio setup.
These are YouTube’s published recommendations for general uploads, not a guarantee that every file with different settings will fail. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings for the current full specification.

Choose a bitrate by resolution and frame rate
The following are YouTube’s SDR upload recommendations. Match both the resolution and frame-rate group; these are reference rates, not a stated mandatory ceiling.

These figures are YouTube’s upload references; they are not measured quality outcomes or universal thresholds. Use the frame rate actually recorded rather than converting footage solely to fit a bitrate row.

When the video is HDR
The SDR guidance above is not a complete HDR workflow. YouTube’s HDR instructions call for correct metadata for the transfer function (PQ or HLG), Rec. 2020 primaries, and the Rec. 2020 non-constant-luminance matrix. They recommend VP9 Profile 2, AV1, and HEVC/H.265 for HDR because they support 10-bit encoding and HDR metadata at reasonable bitrates. H.264 10-bit is listed as workable but requires very high bitrates. Follow the dedicated YouTube HDR upload guidance for HDR exports.
Do not use live-stream settings for uploaded playlist videos
A pre-recorded file uploaded to YouTube uses the upload guidance above, which specifies VBR. A live encoder sends a real-time feed and has separate ingestion settings; YouTube’s live-stream guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR). Do not substitute its bitrate table or CBR instruction for the pre-recorded upload recommendations. See YouTube’s live encoder settings if you are configuring an actual live stream.

A playlist of uploaded videos remains a collection of uploads; merely arranging files in a playlist does not turn their export settings into live-ingestion settings. If you are separately broadcasting pre-recorded video as a live stream, follow the live workflow for the encoder output.
Color and audio checks before uploading
Color
If uploaded colors look wrong, check that the transfer characteristics, color primaries, and matrix metadata match the mastering. YouTube recommends BT.709 for SDR. Its upload troubleshooting guidance covers color metadata checks.

Audio
For general uploads, YouTube lists AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio at 48 kHz. The appropriate channel configuration depends on the audio you are delivering; preserve the intended mix rather than treating a particular channel count as universal.
Common export problems and what to check
- Your preset offers Main but not High: YouTube’s general recommendation names High, but does not state that Main files fail. Check the editor’s export documentation or test a short sample upload.
- The upload has unexpected color: verify that transfer characteristics, primaries, and matrix metadata match the mastered source; for SDR, check BT.709.
- The file is intended for HDR: do not rely on the SDR color and profile advice alone; verify HDR metadata and use the dedicated HDR guidance.
- A live stream buffers or drops frames: that is an encoder-ingestion issue, not a pre-recorded upload-profile choice. Use YouTube’s live settings for the stream output, including CBR.
- The video frame rate differs from the recording: export at the recording frame rate where possible; YouTube says to encode and upload at the same rate.
