Use Puppeteer’s page.screenshot() with omitBackground: true to save a webpage as a transparent PNG. Add fullPage: true for the full document, or use clip to capture a region. The option removes Chrome’s default white canvas; it does not make a background transparent when the page itself paints one.
Capture a transparent PNG with Puppeteer
Puppeteer gives you control over Chrome navigation and screenshot options, including the transparency setting that the Chrome command-line screenshot reference does not document. The following is a runnable JavaScript example using the documented Puppeteer API. Install Puppeteer in your project with npm install puppeteer before running it.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.screenshot({
path: 'capture.png',
type: 'png',
omitBackground: true,
// Add fullPage: true if the whole document is required.
});
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The .png filename and explicit type: 'png' make the intended output clear; PNG is also Puppeteer’s default screenshot format. The omitBackground option is false by default. Set it to true to hide Chrome’s default white background and allow transparent pixels in the capture. See the Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions documentation.
This example uses headless: true, the Puppeteer launch option shown in Chrome’s documentation for its current Headless mode. Chrome’s Headless mode guide describes that mode and its Puppeteer example.

Choose the capture area and wait condition
Capture the viewport, whole page, or a region
By default, the screenshot captures the viewport. Set fullPage: true to request a capture of the full page, or provide clip to constrain the screenshot to a specific region. Puppeteer documents fullPage as false by default and exposes clipping through the screenshot options. Check the API reference for the current option shape and details.
Wait for the page state you actually need
waitUntil: 'networkidle2' is a useful starting point and appears in Puppeteer’s screenshot guide, but it is not a guarantee that every site has finished rendering. Pages that load content after network activity settles may need a wait for a meaningful selector or application state instead. Pick a condition that matches the page; a fixed delay can be used when necessary, but it may either wait longer than needed or capture too soon.

Why the result may not look transparent
omitBackground: true makes Chrome’s default background transparent; it does not erase opaque backgrounds defined by the webpage. If the PNG still looks solid, inspect the target document’s CSS—especially the html and body backgrounds—and remove or override the background that the page paints. The output also depends on whether the page’s assets and content load before capture.
Chrome command line: useful for a quick opaque screenshot
For a one-off screenshot where transparency is not required, Chrome’s CLI can capture a PNG at a specified viewport size:

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=412,892 https://example.com
The command saves screenshot.png in the current working directory. Chrome’s CLI reference also documents --timeout as a maximum wait before capture, including when a page is still loading. Its documented screenshot flags cover sizing and timeout, but do not show a transparency option, so use Puppeteer for the explicit transparent-background workflow. See the Chrome Headless command-line reference.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; its documentation describes the API. For a PNG capture of a page:

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See ScreenshotNeo for plan details. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
Troubleshooting
- The PNG has a white or colored background: Confirm
omitBackground: trueis set. If white remains, the page likely paints an opaque background in CSS; inspect thehtmlandbodystyles and adjust them for the capture. - The screenshot is blank or incomplete: The page may not have reached the state you need when capture ran. Replace or supplement the network-idle wait with a wait for the relevant selector or application state.
- The capture cuts off below the viewport: Add
fullPage: truefor the full document. Useclipwhen you want a particular region rather than the viewport or entire page. - Chrome CLI output is not transparent: The documented CLI screenshot options do not include a transparency flag. Use Puppeteer’s
omitBackground: true. - The command does not save where expected: Chrome’s CLI screenshot is saved as
screenshot.pngin the current working directory; check the directory from which you launched Chrome.
Reliability and cost considerations
A screenshot captures the rendered state Chrome has at that moment, so navigation timing, page CSS, loaded assets, authentication, and dynamic content can affect the output. Choose and validate the wait condition for the particular site rather than assuming that network idle means all visual work is complete. Puppeteer and Chrome documentation do not establish a general performance figure for this workflow, so capture time will depend on the page and environment.
