Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →You can loop one authorized cartoon video with FFmpeg, publish it to a compatible live-streaming endpoint, and use systemd to restart FFmpeg if the process fails. The setup does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast: network or destination failures can interrupt the stream, and an Ubuntu machine must remain powered on and connected. The examples below are patterns to adapt to your Ubuntu release, installed FFmpeg build, media, and platform’s current ingest requirements.
Before you start
Gather the source video, a stable Ubuntu machine, the destination’s ingest URL and stream key, and the destination’s current requirements for video, audio, container, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. The destination is unspecified here, so no particular encoding settings can be assumed to work everywhere.
- Use media you are authorized to broadcast continuously in the relevant territory. Owning a file or being able to stream it does not grant rebroadcast rights.
- Keep the video in a stable, readable location, such as
/srv/cartoon.mp4. Ensure the service account will be able to read it. - Check that the host has the storage, processing capacity, and network connection needed for your chosen media and output settings. No specific hardware or bandwidth requirement is established here.
- Keep the stream key secret. Do not put a real key in a world-readable service file, shell history, or logs.
Inspect Ubuntu, FFmpeg, and the media
These checks identify what is installed and which streams are present; they do not determine whether your platform accepts a particular output configuration.
- Check the Ubuntu release with
lsb_release -aorcat /etc/os-release. - Check the installed FFmpeg version and build options with
ffmpeg -version. Availability of encoders and features depends on how FFmpeg was built. - Inspect the file’s video and audio streams with
ffprobe -hide_banner /srv/cartoon.mp4. Confirm the stream indexes, codecs, dimensions, and frame rate before choosing maps or deciding whether to transcode. - Read the destination’s current official ingest requirements. Set the output codecs, container, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval to match those requirements; the examples here intentionally do not prescribe values for them.
Loop one cartoon file with FFmpeg
For a single file, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 requests indefinite input looping. Use -re to read the file at real-time pace for live-style output. Input options belong before the corresponding -i. FFmpeg documents file-to-RTMP output with -re; its example does not establish that every destination accepts the same muxer or codecs. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation and FFmpeg complete documentation.

This schematic command selects the first video stream and, if present, audio. H.264, AAC, FLV, and the map selection are examples only; confirm the endpoint’s current requirements and your FFmpeg build before using them.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/cartoon.mp4
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a?
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac
-f flv "$RTMP_URL/$STREAM_KEY"
Set RTMP_URL and STREAM_KEY to the exact values provided by the destination. Avoid pasting a real key into a command that may be saved in shell history. Use an appropriately protected secret file or another suitable secret-handling method, and restrict access to it.
FFmpeg’s documentation also describes a FIFO muxer recovery pattern. This can be relevant to temporary output failures, but it is separate from looping the input and does not guarantee a gap-free broadcast. The documented example is in the FFmpeg complete documentation.

Run FFmpeg as a systemd service
Run FFmpeg directly as the service’s main process so systemd can supervise it. The example below is a unit-file pattern, not a tested, drop-in configuration: adapt the paths, account, secret handling, dependencies, and restart delay to your machine and installed Ubuntu version. It uses environment-file variables for illustration; protect that file so the stream key is not readable by other users.
[Unit]
Description=Cartoon live stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamer
EnvironmentFile=/etc/cartoon-stream.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/cartoon.mp4 -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv ${RTMP_URL}/${STREAM_KEY}
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
In this illustration, the environment file would define RTMP_URL and STREAM_KEY; use permissions that limit access to the service and administrators. Confirm the actual FFmpeg path with command -v ffmpeg. Ensure the streamer account exists and can read both the media and protected configuration. If the machine’s network readiness, mounted media, or other prerequisites differ, adjust the unit accordingly.
- Save the adapted unit as
/etc/systemd/system/cartoon-stream.service. - Ask systemd to load the unit with
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Validate the unit locally with the verification tools available on your system before enabling it.
- Start it with
sudo systemctl start cartoon-stream.service, then inspectsudo systemctl status cartoon-stream.service. - If it is behaving as expected, enable startup at boot with
sudo systemctl enable cartoon-stream.service.
Ubuntu’s Noble systemd.service manual, for its packaged systemd version 255.4-1ubuntu8.17, recommends Restart=on-failure for long-running services. Restart attempts are subject to systemd start-rate limiting; a requested stop does not trigger an automatic restart. A delay such as RestartSec=10 is an example, not a universal setting. See the Ubuntu Noble systemd.service manual.

Understand what recovery can and cannot do
Different failures need different recovery mechanisms. FFmpeg protocol reconnect options apply to supported input protocols and conditions; do not assume they restore an RTMP output connection. FIFO output recovery attempts to handle temporary output failures while FFmpeg continues processing. If FFmpeg exits, systemd can restart the process, which typically creates a new publishing session and may cause an interruption.
| Failure or mechanism | What it can address | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Input-side protocol reconnect options | Some input connection failures for supported protocols and conditions. | They do not automatically restore a disconnected output connection. |
| FFmpeg FIFO muxer recovery | Attempts recovery from temporary output failures while FFmpeg continues running. | Does not guarantee that the destination session resumes without a gap. |
systemd Restart=on-failure |
Restarts FFmpeg after a process failure. | Restart attempts are rate-limited; a restarted process may have to establish a new publishing session. |
| Host, power, or destination outage | Not resolved simply by looping input or supervising the process. | A dead host cannot run FFmpeg, and a destination outage may prevent publishing. |
None of these mechanisms guarantees no gap, no repeated content, recovery from a dead machine, or destination availability. Choose safeguards based on the failure you need to handle.
Verify the live output and troubleshoot
A running service only shows that systemd considers its process active. Check that viewers can actually receive valid audio and video at the destination, and monitor logs and resource use.

- Service will not start: Check
systemctl status cartoon-stream.serviceandjournalctl -u cartoon-stream.service. Verify the unit syntax, FFmpeg path, service account, environment-file permissions, and file access. - FFmpeg exits immediately: Read the journal and FFmpeg error output. Confirm that the installed build includes the selected encoders and muxer, the input is readable, the stream maps exist, and the destination URL and key are correct.
- Service is active but the destination shows no valid stream: Check the endpoint health and its current ingest requirements. Confirm that the selected container, codecs, and stream mapping are accepted; process activity alone does not prove a usable output.
- Stream disconnects and does not return: Determine whether input, output network, FFmpeg, host, or destination failed. Check FFmpeg logs and systemd restart limits. Input reconnect options are not a substitute for output recovery.
- Restarts repeat rapidly or stop occurring: Review the journal and systemd start-rate limiting. Adjust restart delay and service policy to suit the failure pattern rather than allowing a tight restart loop.
- Broadcast is interrupted after a restart: This can occur when systemd relaunches FFmpeg into a new publishing session. Process supervision does not promise a seamless transition.
- Video or audio is missing or rejected: Recheck
ffprobeoutput and stream maps, then compare the encoded output choices with the destination’s current official specification.
Also monitor CPU, disk, and network use on the Ubuntu host. These are operational checks, not evidence of any particular hardware requirement or guaranteed stream quality.
Content and copyright considerations
Continuous cartoon rebroadcast requires rights that cover the specific works, territory, and intended use. A consumer subscription, local copy, or technical ability to stream is not proof of permission. Verify authorization with the relevant rights holder before going live. The copyright safety checklist can help organize questions to review; it does not grant rights.
The procedure here covers one looping file. A playlist or continuously updated schedule needs a separately validated workflow; the sources cited here do not establish an authoritative playlist recipe or seamless transitions between files.
