There is no single monthly electricity cost for a PC running a kids’ stream around the clock in India. The estimate depends on the PC’s average power draw at the wall and your household’s local tariff. As simple 30-day examples, a steady 50 W draw uses about 36 kWh (units) and 100 W uses about 72 kWh. These are calculations, not measurements of a typical streaming PC.
Estimate the monthly electricity use
Use the PC’s average AC wall draw, not the wattage printed on its power supply. The calculation assumes that draw stays steady for 24 hours a day over a 30-day month:
Monthly kWh = average wall watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × 30

For example, 50 W ÷ 1,000 × 24 × 30 = 36 kWh. One kWh is commonly called one electricity unit in India. Actual use can vary with the PC’s hardware, playback resolution, browser or app, GPU acceleration, encoding, background activity, peripherals and whether a display remains on.

Turn those units into a rupee estimate
Multiply the additional kWh by the marginal energy rate on your household bill. India does not have one universal domestic rate for this calculation: the applicable tariff depends on the state, DISCOM, consumer category, consumption slab and any subsidy or adjustment. The Ministry of Power states that “Electricity tariffs in India are determined by the Appropriate Electricity Regulatory Commissions under the Electricity Act, 2003.” Ministry of Power: electricity tariff.
Example using Lakshadweep’s FY 2026–27 domestic rates
The Lakshadweep Department of Electricity lists normal domestic energy charges of ₹3.55/kWh for the first 100 units, ₹5.30 for 101–200, ₹7.70 for 201–300, ₹10.05 for 301–400 and ₹13.05 above 400. It also lists a fixed charge of ₹25/kW/month. At those energy rates, 36 additional kWh would cost about ₹128–₹470 and 72 additional kWh about ₹256–₹940, depending on the slab or slabs they fall into. These are energy-charge illustrations using Lakshadweep’s rates only, not a national estimate or a full bill calculation. Apply your own bill’s rate
- Find the DISCOM and domestic tariff category on your latest bill.
- Check the applicable energy slabs, subsidy and any fuel or other adjustment shown for your account.
- Estimate how the PC’s additional units fit into your household’s total monthly consumption; they may span more than one slab.
- Multiply the added units in each slab by that slab’s energy rate, then account for applicable charges shown on your bill. Do not assume fixed charges rise in proportion to the PC’s energy use.
The Central Electricity Authority lists tariff-and-duty compilations, but a nationwide marginal domestic rate for an unspecified household is not established here. CEA tariff-and-duty reports.
Measure the PC instead of guessing its wattage
A plug-in electricity usage monitor or watt meter can measure the wall-side draw. Choose one suitable for your local outlet and the connected load. If it records accumulated kWh, leave it connected during several hours of representative stream playback and use the energy reading alongside the elapsed time to estimate average draw. Include the monitor and peripherals if you want their combined bill impact.

ENERGY STAR’s computer guidance describes testing power from an AC source and treating off, sleep and idle as distinct states. An old ENERGY STAR stakeholder test annex showed one desktop averaging about 57 W at idle; a 2006-era Category A desktop specification set a 50 W idle limit. Those are historical examples, not predictions for a current PC or its streaming workload. ENERGY STAR: computers.
For a fair comparison between two PCs or setups, measure both under the same playback conditions and include the same display and peripherals in each reading.

What to count for a 24/7 kids’ stream
- Measure during the actual playback method and resolution you plan to use; a brief idle reading may not represent playback.
- Decide whether the display, speakers, router or other equipment belongs in your estimate. Measure and include only the devices whose electricity cost you want to count.
- Use your household’s tariff and total consumption, not an assumed national per-unit price. The PC’s added use may fall into more than one slab.
