If audio starts in sync with your animated story but drifts further out over time, first measure the drift and determine whether it grows smoothly or jumps at a loop or segment boundary. Those patterns point to different causes. A fixed offset usually calls for checking start timestamps; gradual drift calls for investigating audio timing and timestamps. There is no single safe FFmpeg fix without the command, media formats, FFmpeg build, and measurements.
Identify what kind of sync problem you have
Before changing filters or timestamps, compare audio and video at the beginning, after a representative interval, and after a content transition. Note whether the offset stays about the same, grows steadily, or changes suddenly. These observations narrow the investigation but do not, by themselves, prove a cause.
- Fixed offset: Audio and video are already misaligned near the start, and the gap remains roughly stable. Check their start times and any intentional input offset.
- Gradual drift: They begin close together, but the gap grows with playback time. Investigate clock, sample cadence, and timestamp behavior.
- Sudden jump: Sync changes at a loop, file change, or segment boundary. Inspect timestamps on both sides of that boundary and how the incoming media establishes its timeline.
If you can, compare a local recording of FFmpeg’s output with the receiving player or platform. A downstream playback or display issue cannot be distinguished from an encoding issue using the stream title alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMeasure the drift before editing the command
Inspect stream timing with ffprobe
Use ffprobe to examine audio and video start times, durations, and reported frame-rate fields. For example, the FFmpeg cookbook demonstrates inspecting fields such as stream=start_time and frame-rate information. Treat this as an initial check: reported metadata does not establish exactly how your full pipeline behaves, and variable-frame-rate media or segments with different timestamp origins may need closer inspection. See the FFmpeg cookbook’s audio/video sync guide.

Watch playback synchronization with ffplay
Play a representative input or capture with ffplay’s statistics display enabled. The FFplay documentation says the display includes, among other details, the current position and audio/video synchronization drift. Record the observed drift at the start, later in playback, and after a transition. FFmpeg’s documentation also notes that the master clock controls audio-video synchronization; audio is the default master clock in most players, and changing it may be necessary in some streaming or high-quality broadcast cases. The -sync option is described mainly as a debugging aid, not a generic correction.
Preserve the pipeline details
Save the exact FFmpeg command and note the installed FFmpeg version/build, input formats, output protocol, and where the drift is measured. Pay particular attention to -copyts, -itsoffset, -stream_loop, -re, stream mapping, filters, codecs, and output options. Without those details, a proposed command may change the wrong part of the timeline or fail to address the receiver’s behavior.

Choose a correction based on the pattern
For a stable offset, investigate start timestamps
Compare audio and video start times and check whether the command applies an intentional input offset. An offset changes timing by shifting media; it does not correct a mismatch that accumulates as playback continues. Do not use a fixed shift as a remedy for steadily growing drift unless measurements show that it is appropriate.
For gradual drift, investigate audio timing and resampling
A mismatch between audio cadence and stream timestamps can be one possible cause of gradual drift. The FFmpeg cookbook gives -af "aresample=async=1:first_pts=0" as an example to investigate, not a universal or verified fix for every input. Confirm the current meaning and availability of the aresample options in the FFmpeg Filters Documentation for your installed build before trying them.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
An audio filter processes audio; this is not a stream-copy-only adjustment. If the output currently copies audio, applying an audio resampling filter means audio must be decoded and re-encoded. Check the resulting output for both synchronization and audio quality, and keep a known-good command so you can revert.
For jumps, check discontinuities and timestamp flags
First identify the input format and timestamp options. FFmpeg documents automatic correction of timestamp discontinuities for formats that accept them, including MPEG-TS and HLS. It also documents that this behavior is automatically disabled when -copyts is used, apart from timestamp wrapping detection. These conditions make format and flags important to diagnosis; they are not a reason to add or remove -copyts blindly. Consult the FFmpeg documentation on timestamp handling.

Shifting all timestamps to start at zero does not necessarily repair relative audio/video sync: when FFmpeg applies a common shift, the relative differences between audio, video, and subtitles are preserved. Likewise, inspect packet timestamps around a loop or asset boundary before assuming file looping caused the problem.
Check loop and 24/7 behavior separately
A continuous schedule makes it useful to check both smooth drift during an asset and sudden changes at content transitions. It does not establish a special FFmpeg defect associated with 24/7 streaming. If the feed loops files or switches assets, capture or inspect the timing around that transition; a reset or discontinuous incoming timeline is a possibility to investigate, not a confirmed cause.

FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMP as multimedia streaming over TCP/IP and includes an example of publishing with FFmpeg. A VPS or other hosting arrangement can keep a process running, but changing where FFmpeg runs will not correct incorrect timestamps or a clock mismatch.
Common troubleshooting outcomes
- The offset is present from the first seconds: Compare audio and video start times and review any
-itsoffsetor other deliberate timing shift. - The gap grows over runtime: Measure it at multiple points and investigate audio/sample timing and timestamps; verify
aresamplebehavior for your build before testing a filter. - The gap changes at a transition: Inspect timestamps and packets around the loop or segment boundary, and check whether the incoming source resets its timeline.
- The command uses
-copytswith MPEG-TS or HLS input: Account for FFmpeg’s documented discontinuity-correction behavior before altering flags. - Local output looks synchronized but the platform does not: Compare captures and playback paths; the evidence may point to the receiver rather than the FFmpeg output, but the cause remains unconfirmed until isolated.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the sync issue is in your FFmpeg pipeline, moving it to a cloud service will not fix the timestamps.
