For a single YouTube Live stream, plan for about 10 Mbps of sustained upload at 720p, 18 Mbps at 1080p30, or 22 Mbps at 1080p60. These are practical targets based on YouTube’s recommended H.264 live bitrates with roughly 20% headroom—not guarantees of uninterrupted streaming. A prerecorded video does not need less bandwidth once it is being sent as a live stream: its resolution, frame rate, codec, and encoder bitrate determine the network load.
Upload speed targets by stream quality
YouTube’s recommended H.264 live bitrates provide a useful planning baseline. The upload targets below add room for normal variation and other network use; YouTube advises leaving “a bit of room (20% recommended).” The targets are rounded practical estimates, not separate YouTube requirements.
| Live output | YouTube-recommended H.264 stream bitrate | Practical sustained upload target |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 or 720p60 | 8 Mbps | About 10 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | About 18 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | About 22 Mbps |
The stream bitrate is the encoder’s outgoing data rate; the upload target is the capacity you want available to that encoder. YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec and settings, so these H.264 figures should not be treated as universal for AV1, H.265, or every quality configuration. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Is 10 Mbps upload enough for a YouTube Live stream?
It is a reasonable target for 720p using the H.264 recommendations above. It is not enough to meet the practical target for 1080p30 or 1080p60. Check the upload speed actually available to the streaming device, rather than relying on a provider’s headline plan speed or a download-speed result. YouTube notes that upload capacity can be lower than download capacity and that people and devices sharing a connection can reduce what remains for a stream. Its streaming tips recommend testing available upload and leaving room for fluctuations.

How to check whether your connection can sustain the stream
- Choose the output first. Decide the resolution and frame rate, then set the encoder’s bitrate using YouTube’s live guidance for the chosen codec. The target in the table is for available upload, not a setting to enter as the stream bitrate.
- Test the actual upload path. Run a speed test at the location and on the connection the encoder will use. Test when household or workplace network activity is typical, and account for other uploads or users. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate before streaming.
- Run a representative test stream. Include the sound and movement present in the prerecorded program, rather than testing only a static screen. Watch the stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room and look for bitrate drops or connection problems. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing and monitoring stream health.
- Adjust if the test is unstable. Reduce the output resolution, frame rate, or encoder bitrate if the available upload cannot sustain the selected settings with headroom. Retest under realistic network use before relying on the setup.
A speed test is a snapshot, not a promise that upload capacity will stay constant. The connection can be shared, congested, or interrupted. A wired connection may be a practical way to avoid some local wireless variability, but it does not increase the upload capacity supplied by the internet connection.
Does a prerecorded 24/7 stream need less internet speed?
No—not while it is being broadcast live. The encoder still sends a continuous live feed to YouTube, so its chosen bitrate sets the network requirement whether the pictures came from a camera or a prerecorded file. Running for 24 hours does not multiply the required Mbps: bitrate is a rate. A continuous schedule does, however, make stability, power, encoder uptime, monitoring, and recovery planning important.

Keep live streaming separate from uploading a video file. YouTube publishes distinct recommendations for video-file upload encoding; for example, its file-upload table includes an 8 Mbps recommendation for 1080p standard-frame-rate SDR uploads. That figure is not the broadband upload requirement for a 1080p live stream.
Children’s content does not change the bandwidth calculation
The cited YouTube guidance does not set a different upload target for a stream because it is intended for children. Plan from the live output settings and connection conditions. Separately, make sure the material and its use comply with YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream rules; being prerecorded or made for children does not itself establish permission to broadcast it. YouTube’s live stream settings guide covers stream setup and settings.
