There is no native YouTube feature in this workflow that turns a Google Drive folder into a rotating live playlist. Instead, make the Drive videos available on the computer running OBS Studio, load them into an OBS VLC Video source, and send OBS’s program output to YouTube Live using an encoder stream URL and key.
How the Drive-to-YouTube workflow works
Google Drive stores or syncs the video files; OBS selects and plays them; YouTube Live receives the encoded output. These are separate services, so a Drive folder is not itself a YouTube live playlist. The setup below uses an encoder rather than YouTube’s webcam or mobile streaming paths.
A YouTube playlist is also different from the media queue used by OBS. A YouTube playlist groups videos already on YouTube, while an OBS VLC playlist feeds local media files into the live program. YouTube’s Data API manages YouTube playlist items by playlist and video ID, with OAuth authorization; it does not make Drive files play in a live encoder queue. Make the Drive videos available on the streaming computer
Install and configure Google Drive for desktop on the computer that will run OBS. Drive offers streaming and mirroring modes, which differ in where file contents are kept:

Mirroring or making streamed files available offline is a reliability precaution, not a guarantee against interruptions. Google documents the storage modes in Stream and mirror files with Drive for desktop.
Build the rotating playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed; if the source type is missing, check the OBS and VLC installations.
- Open or create a scene in OBS Studio. Use the scene that should provide the video for the live broadcast.
- Add the source. In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video. Give the source a recognizable name.
- Add the videos. In the source properties, add the Drive video files available on the computer to the playlist. OBS describes this source as supporting a playlist “similar to an Image Slideshow”; see OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.
- Choose the playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist to restart at the end. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want randomized order rather than a predictable sequence.
- Check the scene. Confirm the VLC source is visible in the OBS preview and that the intended video and audio play. If the source is obscured, adjust its position in the Sources list or scene layout.
Do not assume OBS watches the Drive folder and updates its queue automatically. After adding, removing, or replacing files, revisit the VLC source and refresh its playlist as needed. A synced folder and an OBS playlist are separate things.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Prepare a broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream and choose the encoder workflow. YouTube explains this in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select the appropriate YouTube connection method or service, and enter the stream URL and key if prompted. The exact connection fields can depend on the service configuration.
- Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Check stream settings and preview. Review the stream configuration in YouTube and OBS, then start the encoder output and check YouTube’s preview before relying on the broadcast. YouTube’s guidance on settings is at Manage live stream settings.
- Monitor playback. Confirm the picture and audio reach the YouTube preview or watch page, and verify the playlist loops or shuffles as intended. YouTube recommends preparing encoder streams in advance and monitoring live audio and video; see YouTube live streaming tips – Computer.
Try the complete path as a test stream before depending on it. YouTube notes that expensive equipment is not necessary to start: “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.”
What this setup does—and does not—automate
Once OBS is running, its VLC source can play through a local media queue and loop or shuffle that queue. This is not the same as an unattended folder-to-broadcast scheduler. The official guidance cited here does not establish that YouTube will automatically start a new broadcast whenever a Drive folder changes, or that OBS will automatically detect every folder addition or removal.

YouTube supports scheduling a stream and reusing stream settings, which can reduce repeated setup. Fully unattended scheduling across changing Drive contents is a separate automation problem; verify the encoder and API workflow you intend to use before depending on it. Troubleshooting
- VLC Video is not available in OBS: Install VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source menu again.
- A video will not open or plays inconsistently: Confirm the file is accessible on the streaming computer. For Drive streaming mode, make it available offline or use a mirrored local copy; then test the file directly and in OBS.
- The playlist ends instead of restarting: Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
- Videos play in an unexpected order: Check whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled. Turn it off for a predictable sequence.
- New folder files do not appear in the broadcast: Update or refresh the VLC source playlist in OBS. Folder synchronization does not establish that OBS’s list updates automatically.
- OBS shows video but YouTube does not: Check that the encoder stream is started, the correct YouTube stream URL and key are configured, and the broadcast is prepared in Live Control Room. Check YouTube’s preview rather than assuming the local OBS preview means the stream reached YouTube.
- YouTube receives video but not the intended audio: Check the clip’s audio, the OBS source and scene audio settings, and the YouTube preview during a test.
- The broadcast stops when the computer or its connection stops: This method depends on the computer running OBS and the files being accessible there. YouTube’s encoder workflow receives output from that running encoder; it does not turn the Drive folder into a cloud-hosted player.
Copyright and channel considerations
Only stream videos you have the rights or permissions to use. Uploading a file to Drive or adding it to an OBS queue does not grant live-streaming rights. Check the relevant music, video, and other content permissions, and review YouTube’s policies and the stream settings for your channel before broadcasting. A playlist workflow does not guarantee monetization or policy eligibility.
