There is no universal cookie-banner selector: the locator and whether to accept, reject, or close depend on the site and on what your test is meant to verify.
Dismiss the banner before taking the screenshot
For a predictable in-page banner, make dismissal an explicit part of the browser flow. Use a locator that matches the site’s real, visible control and wait for it before clicking. The Playwright Page API recommends waiting for predictable overlays and dismissing them in the normal test flow rather than relying on page.addLocatorHandler() (Playwright Page API).
Here is a runnable Node.js example using Playwright’s test runner. Replace the URL and the example button name with the target site’s actual values. The button-name locator is illustrative, not a standard cookie-banner locator.

});Install the test runner with npm init playwright@latest if the project does not already use it, then run the test with npx playwright test. The project setup and commands can vary if Playwright is already installed or configured differently.
Choose the consent action your test intends
A banner may offer accept, reject, or close controls. Click the one that corresponds to the scenario being tested; do not accept optional cookies merely as a shortcut to a clean image. A test of the consent flow should exercise the appropriate choice, while a screenshot-only task may have a different goal.
Handle banners that may not appear
If the site shows consent only in a fresh session, run the test with a clean browser context or clear the relevant site storage as part of setup. If the banner is conditional, decide whether its absence is acceptable or a test failure. Avoid swallowing every timeout: doing so can leave a banner covering the screenshot while the test appears to pass.
Dismissal versus hiding the banner in the image
These are different operations. Clicking the site’s consent control interacts with the page and may record a choice. A screenshot stylesheet or locator mask only changes or covers what appears in the captured image; it does not prove that consent was recorded or that the banner’s behavior was handled. Playwright documents screenshot stylesheets and masks in the Page screenshot API.
Use interaction when the test concerns the real page state. Use visual masking or screenshot-only CSS only when the goal is an image without an element and it is acceptable for the underlying consent flow to remain untouched.

Choose viewport or full-page capture
page.screenshot() captures the current viewport by default. Set fullPage: true when content below the fold should be included. The API also supports options such as output type, scaling, animation handling, and a stylesheet applied during capture; consult the Page API for the current option names and details.

Use screenshot assertions for visual regression tests
For a one-off image, save the result with page.screenshot(). For visual regression testing with Playwright Test, use toHaveScreenshot(). Playwright documents that the assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to be the same before comparing the last screenshot with the reference (PageAssertions API).

Do not confuse an HTML banner with a browser dialog
A cookie banner is usually an element within the page. JavaScript alert, confirm, and prompt are browser dialogs, which Playwright handles separately. Dialogs are auto-dismissed by default; if you register a page.on('dialog') handler, that handler must accept or dismiss the dialog or the page can stall. See Playwright’s dialog documentation. Do not add dialog handling just to deal with an ordinary HTML consent banner.
Troubleshoot a banner that remains or a screenshot that differs
- The locator times out: Check the page’s actual accessible role and control name, whether the banner appears in this session, and whether it is inside a frame. Replace the illustrative locator with one that matches the target page.
- The click does not remove the banner: Verify that the chosen control is enabled and that it is the intended consent action. Wait for the banner or its control to become hidden before capturing, rather than assuming the click succeeded.
- The screenshot still shows the banner: Confirm the capture occurs after the dismissal and visibility check. If using a mask or stylesheet instead, remember that it affects the image, not the site’s recorded consent state.
- The page stalls after a dialog handler is added: Ensure the handler explicitly accepts or dismisses the browser dialog. This applies to JavaScript dialogs, not in-page banners.
- Visual comparisons are inconsistent: Keep the browser version and execution environment consistent between baseline generation and comparison; rendering can vary across machines and modes.
