A Proxmox home server may have the lower incremental cost if you already own the hardware and have reliable, inexpensive power and internet. A VPS makes the hosting charge more predictable, but its transfer allowance and compute capacity must fit your stream. To compare them fairly, use your actual encoder bitrate, measured home-server power draw, local electricity tariff, and the VPS plan’s current price and transfer terms.
What determines the real cost?
A continuous stream has two costs that are easy to underestimate: the power used to run the encoder and the data sent out continuously. At home, calculate the additional electricity and any broadband or equipment costs the stream causes. On a VPS, compare the monthly VM charge with the outbound transfer included in the plan and any overage charge.
Use the encoder’s outgoing bitrate for the transfer estimate, not the combined quality options viewers watch. YouTube receives one stream from your encoder and automatically transcodes it into formats for viewers. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264 at 10 Mbps for 1080p30 or 12 Mbps for 1080p60, with constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval. Those are recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular home connection or VPS can sustain the stream.
Estimate the monthly upload before choosing a host
For a 30-day month, approximate decimal gigabytes sent as: bitrate in Mbps × 324. The calculation assumes the encoder sends continuously for 30 days and excludes protocol overhead.

| Encoder bitrate | Approximate outbound data in 30 days | Approximate binary equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| 10 Mbps | 3,240 GB | About 3.0 TiB |
| 12 Mbps | 3,888 GB | About 3.6 TiB |
Providers may count GB or GiB, and some pool transfer across an account or team. Check the plan’s measurement and pooling rules before treating its advertised allowance as an individual VM limit. A plan that looks inexpensive by monthly price alone may cost more once continuous outbound traffic is included.
Compare the two hosting choices
Proxmox on a home server
If you already have a suitable host, Proxmox is not itself a per-stream hosting fee. Your incremental cash cost may chiefly be the electricity required to keep the host running and any additional internet expense. That is not the same as saying home hosting is free: include equipment depreciation if the machine was bought for this purpose, along with relevant storage replacement, cooling, UPS, or repair costs.

Ideal for complex multitasking—from managing large Excel sheets and Adobe creative apps to streaming high-definition content, ensuring a smooth and vibrant visual experience for professional workflows.
Measure the server at the wall while it runs the actual encoder workload. Do not use the processor’s rated TDP as a substitute for system power draw. Monthly energy is:
average watts × 24 hours × days ÷ 1,000 = kWh
Multiply the resulting kWh by your local electricity price per kWh. If your hardware and broadband are already paid for, separate the incremental cost of leaving the stream running from household costs you would pay anyway.

A VPS
A VPS replaces the physical host at home with a recurring provider charge. You still need to choose and manage the guest operating system and encoder, and confirm that the plan has enough CPU and memory for your particular source, codec, and output settings. The available plan prices and specifications do not establish that a small plan can encode a given stream.
As provider-listed examples on DigitalOcean’s 2026 pricing page, Basic Droplets include a $4/month plan with 1 vCPU, 512 MiB RAM, 10 GiB SSD, and 500 GiB transfer; a $6/month plan with 1 GiB RAM and 1,000 GiB transfer; and a $12/month plan with 2 GiB RAM and 2,000 GiB transfer. These are price and allowance examples, not an endorsement of a plan’s encoding capacity. DigitalOcean documents additional outbound Droplet transfer at $0.01/GiB; included outbound transfer depends on the plan and is pooled across a team. Check the current plan page and terms before ordering.

| Cost or operational factor | Proxmox at home | VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring host charge | No VPS bill, but account for equipment cost if purchased for streaming. | Monthly provider charge; published examples above are not proof of encoding fit. |
| Power | Measure average wall draw during the real workload and multiply by hours and local tariff. | The VM runs in the provider’s data center; the plan price is the visible hosting charge. |
| Internet and outbound traffic | Confirm the ISP permits and reliably sustains the required continuous upload. | Compare the encoder’s projected upload with the included allowance and overage policy. |
| Physical dependencies | Local power, router, host, and ISP are dependencies for the stream. | The provider operates the physical host and data-center network; you remain responsible for the guest OS and encoder. |
| Measured reliability comparison | No universal figure established. | No universal figure established. |
The operational difference is where the physical dependencies sit, not a quantified uptime advantage. The available figures do not establish a universal total-cost winner or a reliability comparison. Your answer depends on your measured home draw and tariff, internet costs, VPS location and plan, and chosen stream settings.
Check the stream settings and connection
- Choose the output format: use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for your target resolution and frame rate. Its recommendations include H.264 at 10 Mbps for 1080p30 or 12 Mbps for 1080p60, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval.
- Check continuous upload headroom: the encoder must keep sending the stream to YouTube without interruption. Test the upload bitrate and monitor YouTube’s stream health; a speed test or recommended bitrate alone cannot guarantee the ISP connection will remain reliable.
- Calculate transfer at that bitrate: use the 30-day estimate above, then compare it with the VPS plan’s outbound allowance and billing units.
- Verify compute fit: confirm that the selected host can sustain the source decoding and output encoding workload. The plan figures above do not benchmark OBS, FFmpeg, or a particular codec and resolution.
- Use a secure ingest connection if appropriate: Google for Developers describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through an SSL connection and specifies port 443. Confirm the endpoint and connection settings in the current YouTube workflow you use.
YouTube advises testing before going live. Keep the stream key private, and review YouTube’s copyright rules and reused-content policies for the material you intend to broadcast. A continuous loop does not grant rights to music or video, and meeting technical settings does not guarantee monetization eligibility.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your priority is keeping a pre-recorded YouTube stream running without maintaining Proxmox or a VPS, StreamNeo is a managed alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and has 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
