Choose how to establish the authenticated state
Authentication is specific to the application. A cookie copied from another browser or injected into WebDriver may not work: its domain and path must match, and the site’s session design determines whether it is sufficient.
Prefer a test setup mechanism for repeatable runs
For automated tests, use an approved application setup method when available, such as an API login that establishes the test account’s session. Selenium’s test-practices guidance recommends avoiding a browser login before every test, noting that it improves test speed and stability: Generating application state.
Add a cookie only in the right domain context
Selenium’s WebDriver cookie methods operate in the current browsing context. Navigate to a page on the cookie’s valid domain before calling add_cookie(); otherwise the browser may reject it. Use the cookie attributes required by the application and browser, including domain, path, expiry, secure, httpOnly, or sameSite settings where applicable. See Selenium’s cookie documentation.

Replace the example host, account path, and cookie value with an authorized test setup. Do not put a real session value in source control or logs.

Selenium documents save_screenshot(filename) as a current-window PNG capture; it returns False on an I/O error and otherwise True. Use an explicit path and ensure its parent directory exists. Current window or full document?
save_screenshot() captures the current window, not a universal full-document image. If content below the viewport must be included, verify the exact method supported by your installed browser and Selenium binding. The reviewed Firefox Python API separately documents full-document screenshot methods; that does not establish identical support across browsers or bindings. See the Firefox WebDriver API reference.
Troubleshoot failed or misleading captures
- Cookie rejected: Navigate to a page on the cookie’s valid domain before adding it. Check the cookie’s domain and path against the target site.
- Screenshot shows a sign-in page: A successful screenshot write only confirms the file was saved. Check that the authentication setup succeeded and verify a site-specific signed-in marker before capturing.
- Screenshot file is missing or empty: Confirm the destination directory exists, use an explicit path, and check the boolean returned by
save_screenshot(). - Lower-page content is absent: The standard method captures the current window. Confirm whether your browser and binding provide a full-document option before depending on one.
- Browser remains open after an error: Put
driver.quit()in afinallyblock so the WebDriver session is closed whether setup or capture succeeds.
Protect cookies and screenshots
Authenticated screenshots may reveal account information, while session cookies can grant access to an account. Treat both as sensitive: avoid printing cookie values, restrict access to output files, and remove or protect captures when they are no longer needed.

No. It reports whether the image file was written; verify the page’s authenticated state separately.
Can I use an existing session cookie with Selenium?
Only if it is valid for the site’s domain and path and the application accepts that session. Follow your application’s authorized test setup.
