Use two clearly labeled captures from the same page: first, open it in a fresh browser context and screenshot the visible consent banner before touching it; then make one specific choice—accept, reject, or customize—and capture the settled page again. Keeping the browser, viewport, and route consistent makes the difference easier to interpret.
Prepare a clean first-visit browser state
A prior visit may have saved a consent choice, hiding the banner you want to document. Start in a new, non-persistent Playwright browser context so the first capture has an isolated browser session. Playwright documents browser contexts and cookie and storage-state APIs at its browser-context documentation. Sites choose how they store consent, so do not assume a particular cookie name or storage mechanism.
Use the same browser, viewport, page route, and relevant conditions for both images. Decide which outcome the second capture is meant to show, and label it specifically—for example, “after accept” or “after reject.” A screenshot labeled only “after consent” can obscure meaningful differences between choices.
Capture the page before and after a choice
The following Node.js example uses Playwright Test. Replace the example URL and the consent button’s accessible name with values verified on the site. It creates a fresh context for each run, takes the first screenshot before interaction, clicks the named control, and captures the resulting page.

test('capture before and after accepting cookies', async ({ browser }) => {
const context = await browser.newContext({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Accept all' }).waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'before-consent.png', fullPage: true });
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Accept all' }).click();
await page.getByRole('button', { name: 'Accept all' }).waitFor({ state: 'hidden' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'after-accept.png', fullPage: true });
await context.close();
});
Install Playwright Test in the project and run the test with the Playwright test runner. The example’s accessible name and banner-disappearance condition are site-specific: inspect the interface and adjust them. Some pages replace or update the banner without hiding that exact button, so use a meaningful condition for the resulting state, such as a verified confirmation or changed page element. Avoid treating a fixed short delay as proof that the page has settled.
Document rejection or custom settings
To capture rejection or a customized choice, target the corresponding visible control instead of “Accept all,” and name the output after that choice. For custom settings, include the relevant settings interaction before the final capture. The banner, page content, and saved preference after each choice depend on the site; record only what you observe.
Make visual comparisons less noisy
Asynchronous content, animations, and rotating or personalized elements can change between captures even when consent is the only deliberate interaction. Wait for a site-relevant condition, keep the viewport fixed, and consider Playwright’s screenshot comparison guidance for animation handling and screenshot styles that hide dynamic elements. Its screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to produce the same result before comparing them; that assertion is intended for test-runner visual comparisons. For direct captures, use the page screenshot API supported by your installed Playwright version. See Playwright’s visual comparisons documentation.
Inspect persistence only when it matters
If the goal includes documenting whether a choice persists, reload the page or open a separate fresh context and record the result as a separate observation. Playwright exposes APIs for inspecting and saving cookies and storage state, but the site determines which storage it uses. A new context gives you an isolated starting point; it does not establish how the site will behave for every visitor or session.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Be careful with saved state: authentication state can contain cookies and headers that could be used to impersonate an account. Playwright advises keeping such files out of source control. Do not put account cookies, authorization headers, or sensitive browser storage into screenshots or a public repository. See Playwright’s authentication guidance.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The banner is missing before the first screenshot: The browser may be reusing a context or saved state. Create a new non-persistent context and verify that the page has not already stored a preference through another mechanism.
- The button locator times out: Check the button’s actual accessible name and role on that page. The example locator is illustrative, not a universal consent-banner selector.
- The second screenshot still shows the banner: Confirm the intended choice was clicked and wait for the site’s actual post-choice condition. Some interfaces update in place rather than removing the control immediately.
- The images differ for unrelated reasons: Keep the route and viewport the same, wait for meaningful page readiness, and account for animation or dynamic elements. A screenshot alone does not establish why content changed.
- A reload produces a different result: Treat persistence as an observed site-specific outcome. Consent can be stored in different ways, and behavior in a fresh context may differ from behavior after reloading the existing one.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its cleanup accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers screenshot tools for AI agents, and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
This one-call example captures a page. To make before-and-after evidence, save the initial image, then make the intended consent choice in a browser and capture the resulting state separately. Review the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API details.
