Report new joins and cancellations separately: a growing total membership can hide losses among existing members. The comparison describes what happened; by itself, it cannot show that the stream caused the change.
Define member retention before comparing periods
Member retention is the proportion of a defined group of channel members who remain active at a later point. It is not the same as video audience retention, which describes whether viewers continue watching a video, or livestream concurrency, which counts viewers watching at the same time.
Choose a baseline cohort
Set the stream’s actual launch date and identify the members who were active at a specific baseline point before launch. Decide in advance what counts as active membership and apply that definition consistently. Track this same cohort through both observation windows; do not replace it with whichever members happen to be active at the end of each period.
Where accessible and appropriate, break results out by member tenure or membership tier. Keep the aggregate result visible, and do not assume it describes every subgroup.

Calculate the retention rate
For each period, divide the number of baseline-cohort members still active at the period’s end by the number in the cohort at baseline, then multiply by 100. Use the same baseline denominator and membership definition for both periods. For example, if 80 of 100 baseline members remain active at one endpoint, the cohort retention rate there is 80%. This illustrates the calculation, not an expected result or benchmark.
Choose comparable pre- and post-launch windows
Compare windows of equal length, with their boundaries recorded. A weekly series can reveal whether a change began before launch or emerged afterward more clearly than one pair of totals. Choose a duration suitable for the channel’s membership volume and renewal cadence; YouTube’s reviewed documentation does not prescribe a universal number of weeks or months.
Check the pre-launch trend
Look at retention before launch, not just the final pre-launch point. If the rate was already declining, a low post-launch result may continue that trend rather than reflect the stream. Seasonality can also affect a simple before-and-after comparison.

Log changes that could affect membership
Record changes around launch to membership prices, perks, publishing cadence, promotion, major events, and membership operations. These may offer plausible alternative explanations for a change in retention, joins, or cancellations. Preserve the date boundaries, cohort rule, filters, and data extraction date so the comparison can be reproduced.

Present the baseline-cohort retention rate as the primary outcome. Show new joins and cancellations alongside it, rather than treating the total member count at the end of a period as a retention measure. New memberships can offset departures in the total and conceal churn from the original cohort.
If member-level longitudinal data is unavailable and you can access only aggregate counts, label the result an aggregate proxy. Aggregate counts cannot establish what proportion of a fixed baseline cohort stayed active.

Use YouTube stream metrics as context, not as a retention substitute
YouTube reports livestream measures such as views, total watch time, average view duration, peak and average concurrent viewers, and video-level audience-retention information. The Analytics API can return concurrent viewers by position in a livestream and audience-retention measures for an individual video. These help describe whether and how people watched; they do not tell you whether existing channel members stayed members. Keep similarly named metrics distinct
- Member retention: the share of the defined member cohort that remains active.
- Audience retention: YouTube’s video-viewing measures. In the API,
audienceWatchRatiocompares viewings of a portion of a video with total video views; because a portion can be replayed, the ratio can exceed 1.relativeRetentionPerformancecompares a video with videos of similar length. - Concurrent viewers: viewers watching at the same time. The API’s
averageConcurrentViewersapplies to a video or stream segment, not to member retention.
Do not relabel any of the video or stream measures as channel-member retention.

YouTube says Analytics data is processed and despammed and measures different information from Live Control Room data. YouTube Studio’s updated experience began rolling out gradually in July 2026, so report locations may differ by account. Where available, use Advanced Mode to compare reports and export data, retaining the selected dates and filters. Data availability can vary. The official guidance describes live-stream and channel-level reporting, including concurrent viewers and hours streamed; it does not establish that every channel can export member-level longitudinal cohorts or use a ready-made retention rate. Google for Developers documented that new YouTube Analytics channel reports including concurrent viewers and member cancellations were available starting May 6, 2024. Availability of those reports does not itself establish access to a fixed-cohort retention calculation for every channel. See the Analytics API revision history.
Interpret cancellation survey responses cautiously
YouTube’s Analytics API documentation includes cancellation-survey reasons such as financial reasons, loss of interest, dissatisfaction with perks, and inability to access or receive perks. These responses can provide context when interpreting membership changes, but they do not establish why members who did not answer cancelled, nor do they prove the stream caused a change. - Equal-length pre- and post-launch windows and the actual stream launch date.
- Baseline-cohort retention rate at each endpoint, with joins and cancellations shown separately.
- Tenure- or tier-level results only where the data supports them.
- Relevant livestream usage measures, clearly labeled as secondary context.
- Pre-launch trend, concurrent channel changes, selected report filters, and extraction date.
Unless you have a credible comparison group or another design that addresses what would have happened without the stream, write that retention “changed after launch,” not that the stream caused the change. If you compare another channel or period, explain how comparable it is and whether its pre-launch trend was similar. The reviewed official sources provide metric definitions and reporting details, not a published estimate of the effect of adding a 24/7 stream on channel-member retention; there is no supported lift or decline to use as a benchmark.
Keep the 24/7 stream running without changing the measurement plan
