There is no universal concurrent-viewer target. A 24/7 YouTube stream’s ad break-even point depends on its monthly operating cost, its ad revenue per 1,000 total live-stream views, and how long viewers stay. Estimate the average concurrent audience—not the peak—and use the channel’s own figures in the model below.
Calculate the average audience needed to break even
For a 30-day month, a stream runs 720 hours. Use this estimate:
Average concurrent viewers to break even = C × 1,000 × L ÷ (720 × R)
- C is total monthly running cost, in the same currency as the revenue figure.
- R is ad-only revenue per 1,000 total live-stream views.
- L is average viewer session length, in hours.
Round the result up to the next whole viewer. The model assumes a fairly steady stream and audience, and that the session length and ad yield you use represent the period being forecast. It is a scenario estimate, not a promise of earnings.

Worked example with hypothetical inputs
If monthly costs are $300, ad-only revenue is $2 per 1,000 total views, and average session length is two hours, the calculation is 300 × 1,000 × 2 ÷ (720 × 2) = 208.34. That means approximately 209 average concurrent viewers under those assumptions. The costs, revenue rate, and session length in this example are illustrative, not published benchmarks; replace them with the channel’s own records.
Choose the right revenue figure
For an ad-only break-even calculation, use the channel’s ad revenue divided by total live-stream views, multiplied by 1,000, for a consistent historical period. Do not silently substitute CPM or standard RPM.
- RPM is creator revenue per 1,000 views after YouTube’s share, but it can combine ads, YouTube Premium, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers. It also includes views that were not monetized. If you use blended RPM because ad-only figures are unavailable, label the result a blended-revenue approximation—not an ad-only estimate.
- CPM is an advertiser-side cost per 1,000 ad impressions before YouTube’s revenue share. It is not creator revenue per 1,000 total stream views.
YouTube states that eligible creators receive 55% of net revenue from Watch Page ads on public videos; that share does not establish a fixed CPM, RPM, or payout for a channel. See YouTube’s partner earnings overview.
Check whether live-stream ads can earn for the channel
To earn Watch Page ad revenue on live streams, a creator needs to be in the YouTube Partner Program and accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. YouTube’s listed ad-revenue eligibility tier is 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified long-form watch hours over 365 days or 10 million qualified Shorts views over 90 days. YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled when live monetization is turned on; mid-roll ads can be automatic or manual. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. A viewer count—or a count of possible ad breaks—therefore cannot be treated as a count of monetized impressions. See YouTube’s live-stream ad guidance.
Build a realistic monthly cost figure
Decide what “running costs” means for this calculation, then include the costs the stream needs to cover. Depending on your setup, that may include:
- Electricity for the computer or encoder, network equipment, and other gear.
- Internet or connectivity charges attributable to the stream.
- Equipment depreciation or financing, if you count those costs.
- Paid streaming services and labor, if applicable.
Estimate electricity from measured use
Electricity cost is based on energy used, not audience size. Convert watts to kilowatts, multiply by operating hours to get kilowatt-hours (kWh), then multiply by your applicable price per kWh. For example, a continuously running stream uses 720 operating hours in a 30-day month. Utilities generally measure electricity usage in kWh; see the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s explanation of electricity measurement and Hawaiian Electric’s appliance-cost calculation.
When practical, measure the actual draw of the computer, encoder, networking gear, and other equipment while operating. A device’s maximum rated wattage may not reflect its real consumption. A plug-in electricity monitor can help with compatible loads; some equipment, including certain 240-volt or hard-wired loads, needs another measurement method. Interpret the result without confusing average and peak viewers
The formula estimates a steady average concurrent audience over the month. A brief peak does not mean the channel sustained that audience or generated the same opportunities for ads. Viewer duration matters: for the same number of concurrent viewers, longer sessions imply fewer distinct total views over the month; the model accounts for this by including average session length.
There is no independently established market-wide figure for how many concurrent viewers a 24/7 stream needs to break even. Costs and realized ad yield vary by channel, and YouTube says it does not guarantee how much a creator will earn or whether they will be paid. Treat the output as a planning estimate and revise it with actual cost and analytics data.
