Choose OBS if your product showcase needs scenes, overlays, and an operator-friendly visual interface. Choose FFmpeg if you have prepared media and want to run a repeatable, script-driven pipeline. Neither choice is proven inherently more reliable for 24/7 operation; continuous streaming also needs monitoring, a recovery plan, and an archive strategy.

For either encoder, follow YouTube’s current ingest recommendations, test with representative audio and motion, and monitor stream health. If you want to avoid keeping a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option for looping uploaded videos to YouTube.

OBS or FFmpeg: which fits your showcase?

Need Better fit Why
Arrange camera or capture sources, product shots, titles, and other visual layers in scenes OBS Its GUI is suited to scene composition and operator controls.
Loop prepared media or run a known feed through a repeatable script FFmpeg Its command-line workflow can suit automation when you are comfortable supervising scripts and logs.
Make visual changes while the stream is running OBS A GUI production workflow is generally more approachable for live scene and overlay edits.
Automate a fixed pipeline with minimal live production changes FFmpeg A scripted process can be repeatable, but exact commands and flags must be checked against current FFmpeg documentation and YouTube’s ingest requirements.

This is a workflow distinction, not a reliability ranking. The available official guidance does not establish that OBS or FFmpeg has better 24/7 uptime.

Codec and computer load

OBS’s format guide describes H.264 as its default codec and notes its broad compatibility. It also says software AV1 encoding requires high-end CPUs for real-time compression, while recent hardware encoders can encode AV1. That is a codec trade-off, not a published minimum computer specification for a continuous stream. The load depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, scene complexity, and whether you are also recording.

Set YouTube Live encoder settings

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported because it encrypts the stream through SSL. YouTube’s live encoder settings are the reference for the current platform recommendations.

Practical 1080p SDR H.264 starting points

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees for every connection or scene. The same YouTube table lists 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 or 60 fps, 15 Mbps for 1440p30, and 24 Mbps for 1440p60. Pick an output your sustained upload connection can support and test it before the showcase; fast motion and detailed product footage can make inadequate bandwidth or encoding capacity more apparent.

Other SDR values

For SDR, YouTube’s recommended advanced values include Rec. 709 color, 8-bit depth, square pixels, progressive scan, stereo audio at 44.1 kHz, and 128 kbps audio. Set compatible values in the encoder where those controls are available, and confirm the resulting stream in YouTube Live Control Room.

These are YouTube’s current platform recommendations, with the guidance checked in 2026; the exact controls and labels available depend on your encoder and version. Consult the current YouTube settings page rather than copying an old profile.

Set up and test the broadcast

  1. Enable the YouTube live stream and prepare the event. Open YouTube Live Control Room and configure the broadcast details. Use the current YouTube interface and account requirements; older OBS walkthroughs may show outdated verification or menu steps.
  2. Choose an encoder workflow. In OBS, build and preview the scenes you need, then open its current streaming settings and select the YouTube service and stream key. With FFmpeg, validate the command and input/output options against current FFmpeg documentation and YouTube ingest requirements; do not rely on an unverified command copied from an old tutorial.
  3. Use the correct stream key. Copy the key for the intended YouTube broadcast into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat it as a credential: do not publish it, share it in a screenshot, or include it in a public script or log.
  4. Configure the output. Set the chosen resolution and frame rate, CBR, the recommended two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds), and the compatible codec and SDR values described above.
  5. Run a representative test. Test the same kind of product footage, motion, and audio expected in the showcase. Check picture, sound, and YouTube’s stream-health messages before committing to a continuous broadcast.
  6. Start and supervise the stream. Watch YouTube Live Control Room for stream health and configuration warnings. Decide who will notice a dropped connection and what they will do before the stream begins.

Plan for 24/7 operation, recovery, and archives

A 24/7 stream is an operational system, not just an encoder setting. Keep the source media available if it is prerecorded, supervise the process, and decide how to respond if the connection or encoder stops. The reviewed guidance does not verify a particular automatic restart method or promise seamless reconnection, so test the recovery procedure you choose.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API exposes stream status and health data. Its documented health labels include good, ok, bad, and noData; configuration issues can also be reported. This can help an operator or monitoring integration identify trouble, but it does not replace a response plan. See the Live Streaming API stream resource documentation.

Do not rely on one uninterrupted YouTube archive

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; if a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. For a 24/7 channel, do not promise viewers that one continuous replay will be preserved. If an archive matters, make a local recording and/or plan shorter broadcasts, weighing archive needs against audience continuity. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.

Costs and hosting choices

Running OBS or FFmpeg yourself means providing and supervising a suitable host: an existing computer, a dedicated machine, or a remote server may work depending on the workload. A dedicated mini PC is one possible option, not a requirement or a guaranteed fit. Decide based on codec, resolution, frame rate, source type, and whether you will record locally; no specific model or minimum specification is established here.

A remote server can move the encoder away from your desk, but you still need to configure, monitor, and recover the process. With a local computer, include the cost and practical burden of keeping the machine and reliable internet available. No single cost comparison applies to every setup.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the showcase uses uploaded product videos rather than a live camera, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live by looping uploaded videos or a playlist from the cloud:

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card (one free day per account). Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera. Start your free StreamNeo day.

Common problems and what to check

  • YouTube reports poor or unstable stream health: Check that the sustained upload connection can handle the selected bitrate, verify the encoder’s output settings, and test again with representative footage. Lower the output quality if the connection cannot sustain the chosen recommendation.
  • The stream looks choppy or the encoder struggles: Review the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, scene complexity, and other work on the host. Software AV1 encoding can be demanding; consider a compatible hardware encoder or a less demanding output after testing.
  • YouTube reports a configuration issue: Compare the encoder settings with YouTube’s current recommendations, especially codec, CBR, keyframe interval, and audio/video format.
  • The broadcast stops unexpectedly: Check the encoder, host, network, source availability, and YouTube status. Follow the recovery procedure assigned to the operator; do not assume a dropped connection will restart seamlessly.
  • No replay appears for a long stream: A broadcast exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Use local recording or plan shorter broadcasts if preserving an archive is essential.
