To estimate how many monthly views your monetized 24/7 YouTube stream needs to cover its costs, divide those costs by your creator RPM per 1,000 views: break-even views = monthly operating costs × 1,000 ÷ creator RPM. The result is a planning estimate, not a promise of earnings. Use your own YouTube Analytics data and include the costs and revenue sources that actually apply to your stream.

Calculate the monthly view target

First choose one period—usually a month—and express both costs and revenue in that same period. Let C be the stream’s monthly operating cost and R be its creator RPM, in currency units per 1,000 views.

Break-even monthly views = C × 1,000 ÷ R

For example, if your monthly costs are 300 currency units and your creator RPM is 1.50 per 1,000 views, the estimate is 300 × 1,000 ÷ 1.50 = 200,000 views for the month. Replace both example inputs with your own figures; this arithmetic does not establish that a particular RPM or audience size is typical.

Estimate an hourly target

For an hourly estimate, divide monthly costs by the actual operating hours in that month, then divide that hourly cost by estimated creator revenue per hour. A 24/7 schedule runs about 24 hours a day, but months have different numbers of days. If revenue per hour is not available from your own data, do not infer it from monthly views without making the assumptions explicit.

Build a complete cost figure

Count costs attributable to operating the stream, not just the software bill. Separate recurring charges from costs that occur occasionally, then convert period-specific expenses into a monthly allocation where appropriate.

  • Internet service and electricity attributable to the stream.
  • Streaming software, hosting, or cloud service fees.
  • Paid labor, if anyone is responsible for setup, moderation, or maintenance.
  • Equipment purchase, maintenance, and replacement, allocated reasonably across the months you expect to use it.

These are inputs for your cost model, not a list of costs published by YouTube. If a cost is shared with other work, include only the portion you reasonably attribute to this stream. Keep fixed costs and costs that change with operating time or usage separate so you can see what drives the result.

Use creator RPM rather than CPM

YouTube defines RPM as creator revenue after revenue share per 1,000 views. It can include ads, YouTube Premium, channel memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers. CPM, by contrast, is what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions before YouTube’s revenue share; it is not the amount a creator receives per 1,000 video views. See YouTube’s definitions in Understand ad revenue analytics.

Use your channel’s own Analytics data for a period that reasonably represents the stream. A blended channel RPM may not predict this one stream precisely: it can reflect different videos, audiences, formats, revenue sources, and views that did not monetize. Where available, inspect live-stream and replay revenue in YouTube Analytics rather than assuming the channel-wide average transfers unchanged.

Include live revenue without double-counting

YouTube lists live-stream ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships among live monetization features. Premium can also contribute creator revenue when eligible Premium viewers watch content. Check the relevant feature and eligibility details in YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance and its YouTube Partner Program overview.

If you use RPM for the break-even calculation, do not add revenue sources already reflected in that RPM period a second time. If instead you build a revenue total from separate Analytics lines, include only the lines you intend to model and make sure their dates and scope match. For a more detailed forecast, calculate revenue by source and add the components once.

Model uncertainty, not a guaranteed outcome

A 24/7 schedule does not guarantee continuous viewership, a particular number of monetized playbacks, or a fixed RPM. YouTube explicitly says, “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads,” and ad delivery can vary. Its live-stream guidance describes automatic mid-roll choices with low, medium, and high ad-break frequency settings, and says creators can inspect live and replay ad revenue in Analytics: Manage live stream ads.

Build low, base, and high cases from your own revenue history and plausible RPM assumptions. Use the same month or other period for cost, RPM, and view assumptions in every case.

Case Inputs to use How to interpret it
Low Lower plausible RPM and conservative view or ad-delivery assumptions based on your history. Tests whether the stream can cover costs under weaker conditions.
Base Your best-supported estimate from the most relevant Analytics period and expected costs. Use as the central planning estimate, not a guarantee.
High Higher but supportable RPM and audience assumptions; do not treat a one-off strong period as typical without evidence. Shows potential upside while keeping the assumptions visible.

For each case, calculate break-even views as monthly cost × 1,000 ÷ that case’s RPM. If a case includes revenue streams outside RPM, calculate the remaining cost those sources must cover and document the underlying assumptions instead of quietly mixing incompatible figures.

Check monetization access before relying on the estimate

Watch Page ad and Premium revenue from live streams depends on applicable eligibility and acceptance of the Watch Page Monetization Module. Access to other features may also depend on location, thresholds, and other requirements. Confirm current access and terms in YouTube Studio and the official YouTube monetization policies before treating forecast revenue as available to your channel. These rules and controls can change.

What YouTube’s published ad comparison does—and does not—show

YouTube reports that creators who chose automatic live mid-roll ads saw an average uplift of over 20% in instream ad revenue per hour compared with channels without automatic mid-rolls, across 207 countries in January 2024. This is YouTube’s reported comparison, not a causal guarantee or an individual forecast. It does not establish a typical RPM for a channel or topic. The same guidance says ad delivery is not guaranteed, so use your Analytics history rather than applying that percentage mechanically to your own break-even estimate. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream ad guidance.

Turn the estimate into a decision

  1. Choose a period. Use a month or another clearly defined period, and align every cost and revenue input to it.
  2. Total attributable costs. Include recurring bills and reasonable monthly allocations for equipment and maintenance.
  3. Choose an appropriate RPM. Prefer the channel’s relevant live-stream Analytics period; record why it may differ from this stream.
  4. Calculate the view threshold. Multiply the period’s cost by 1,000 and divide by creator RPM.
  5. Run low, base, and high cases. Change the assumptions transparently rather than presenting one outcome as certain.
  6. Compare with observed performance. Check actual stream and replay views and revenue in Analytics, then update the inputs as the stream accumulates data.

The estimate answers a narrow question: how much measured creator revenue is needed to cover the costs you included? It does not determine whether the channel is profitable after excluded expenses, whether its content complies with YouTube policy, or whether the audience will continue watching.
