For a practical starting point, YouTube recommends RTMPS and lists 5 Mbps for H.264 video at 1080p30, with a 2-second keyframe interval. Those settings are not a guarantee that a particular Mac mini or internet connection will sustain a nonstop broadcast: test your setup before relying on it.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel verified for live streaming, with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned launch. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the activation and setup process.
- A Mac mini running an encoder that can send a feed to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder documentation includes OBS, but it does not establish which Mac mini generation can sustain a specific resolution or codec.
- An internet connection with sufficient upload bandwidth for the total video and audio bitrate, plus headroom for other network use.
- A plan for monitoring and recovery. A nonstop broadcast can still be interrupted by power, network, or encoder problems; the computer-based workflow is not an unattended failover system.
Configure YouTube Live and the encoder
- Activate live streaming in advance. In YouTube Studio, start the live-stream setup and complete any channel verification or activation steps. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream, then locate its server URL and stream key.
- Enter the ingest details in your encoder. Copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into the corresponding encoder fields. Treat the key as a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement key.
- Choose a conservative output and transport. YouTube recommends RTMPS. For H.264 at 1080p30, its settings table recommends a video bitrate of 5 Mbps, a 2-second keyframe interval, and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube also says not to exceed a 4-second keyframe interval. For a mostly static showroom, 1080p30 is a reasonable test starting point, not a universal best setting; select a bitrate your connection and encoder can sustain.
- Check upload capacity and leave headroom. YouTube recommends available upload bandwidth 20% above your total stream bitrate. At the recommended 5 Mbps video bitrate, calculate headroom against the combined video and audio bitrate, not video alone. Check outbound upload performance rather than relying on download speed, and account for other devices using the connection. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. Read YouTube’s streaming tips.
The figures above are YouTube platform recommendations; they are not minimum requirements, observed reliability statistics, or a guarantee of picture quality. Other settings may be appropriate if your encoder, content, and upload connection support them.
Rehearse, launch, and monitor the showroom feed
- Test with representative content. Run a rehearsal using the motion, lighting, and audio that viewers will actually encounter. A static display and a busy showroom can behave differently, so check the real feed rather than relying only on encoder settings.
- Inspect YouTube’s preview and stream health. Before making the broadcast public, check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. Resolve warnings and confirm that both picture and sound are usable.
- Start the scheduled or created stream from the encoder. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and that the live broadcast is in the intended state in Live Control Room.
- Monitor during operation. Check audio and video quality and keep an operator plan for interruptions. A Mac mini encoder sends the stream, but it does not remove the need to respond to network, power, or software failures.
Plan around the archive limit
Keeping a broadcast live and retaining a complete recording are separate requirements. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance does not establish automatic archiving for streams lasting 12 hours or more. Do not assume a single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will produce a complete archive.
If you need a retained recording, arrange a separate recording workflow or consider shorter, segmented broadcasts, then verify current YouTube behavior for your channel before depending on an archive. Segments can make it easier to keep individual broadcasts within the documented under-12-hour archive guidance, but they introduce planned breaks and require a restart workflow.

Mac mini suitability and unattended operation
The official YouTube guidance supports sending a live feed from a computer encoder, but it does not prove that any particular Mac mini model can sustain your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. Test the actual machine and intended workload before committing it to a customer-facing stream. If you are deciding whether to buy or replace a Mac mini, do not infer a suitable generation from YouTube’s encoder settings alone.
This workflow also does not establish how to configure macOS sleep or power settings for unattended operation. Check current Apple guidance for your macOS version and verify the behavior on the specific Mac mini; do not assume the computer will remain awake or recover from every interruption without testing.

Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start the stream | Live streaming is not activated, channel verification is incomplete, or the channel has a live-streaming restriction. | Check the channel’s live-stream eligibility in YouTube Studio. Complete activation early; first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | The server URL or stream key is missing, incorrect, or out of date. | Compare the encoder’s ingest details with the current stream in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it there and replace the encoder’s saved key. |
| Stream health reports connection trouble or the feed breaks | Available upload bandwidth is insufficient or unstable, or other network activity is competing with the stream. | Measure outbound upload, compare it with total stream bitrate, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and reduce output bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. Test the connection under realistic network use. |
| Picture or sound is poor despite a successful connection | The selected output settings may not suit the content or encoder, or audio settings may be misconfigured. | Review the encoder output and YouTube stream-health messages. Use the 1080p30 H.264 recommendation as a starting point only, and rehearse with representative showroom content and audio. |
| The stream stops when nobody is watching the Mac | The computer, encoder, network, or power may have stopped or lost connectivity. | Inspect the Mac and encoder state, network, and power; verify sleep behavior for the installed macOS version using current Apple guidance. YouTube’s computer-encoder workflow does not itself provide unattended failover. |
| A long broadcast has no complete automatic archive | YouTube’s stated automatic-archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not broadcasts at or above that duration. | Use a separate recording method or plan segmented broadcasts if a retained recording is required, and verify current archive behavior before relying on it. |
Or let it run in the cloud
