Build a separate scene for each segment in OBS Studio, then switch between them during the broadcast using OBS’s scene controls or hotkeys. YouTube Studio schedules and manages the live event; OBS creates and sends the program feed. YouTube Studio’s event scheduler is not the scene rotator.
How the rotation works
A scene is a prepared layout made from sources such as a camera, a captured window or display, images, and text. Create a Product Demo scene and a Customer Tutorial scene, each with the material viewers need for that segment. When you activate the other scene in OBS, the outgoing program changes; a Cut or Fade transition can make the switch immediate or gradual.
YouTube Studio handles the event itself: scheduling it, receiving the encoder feed, showing a preview, and starting the broadcast. OBS composes and sends that feed. The practical workflow is to prepare and switch scenes in OBS while managing the event in YouTube Live Control Room.
Set up the scenes in OBS
- Create a demo scene. In OBS, add a scene named Product Demo. Add a specific application window or display capture for a software demonstration, or a camera source for a physical product. Add labels or graphics only where they help explain what is on screen.
- Create a tutorial scene. Add a second scene named Customer Tutorial. Include the tutorial screen or other instructional material, plus a presenter camera or graphics if they help viewers follow along.
- Arrange and check each layout. Make the product or instruction prominent, and check that sources are visible and readable in the finished program. Confirm that the intended window or display is being captured before presenting private or unrelated material.
- Choose a transition. Use a Cut for a direct change or a Fade for a gradual one. To prepare the next scene before viewers see it, use OBS Studio Mode: select and inspect the next scene in preview, then send it live when ready.
- Choose how to trigger changes. A host or producer can select the next scene in OBS, or use configured scene hotkeys. Rehearse the controls so a key press or click changes the intended scene.
Schedule and connect the YouTube event
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified, must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check the channel’s current eligibility in YouTube Studio before you announce the event. YouTube: Get started with live streaming.
- Schedule the event. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, use the Manage tab to schedule the stream. The upcoming event page can be shared, and viewers can set reminders. Scheduling creates and manages the event; it does not switch OBS scenes.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS stream settings, select YouTube if that integration is available, or enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. The key authorizes the encoder to send the feed, so treat it like a password. YouTube documents the encoder connection and event workflow in its encoder live-streaming guide and live-stream settings guide.
- Start the encoder and check the preview. Start streaming from OBS and wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room. Confirm the correct scene, picture, and sound in the preview before starting the event.
- Start and monitor the live event. When the preview is ready, go live from Live Control Room. Check the broadcast’s audio and video quality and verify that viewers can reach the event from the channel and watch pages, including on mobile.
- End both parts cleanly. End the event in Live Control Room, then stop the encoder in OBS. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
Choose manual switching or automation
| Approach | How it works | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual scene changes | A host or producer selects a scene or uses an OBS hotkey; Cut, Fade, and Studio Mode support the change. | Live demos with questions, interruptions, or segments whose timing may change. | An attentive operator must decide when each segment is ready. |
| Timed or rule-based changes | An automation rule or external tool triggers scene changes. | A rehearsed sequence with fixed-duration segments. | The cited OBS and YouTube documentation does not establish a native YouTube Studio timed scene-rotation workflow. Verify any plugin or external automation’s compatibility and maintenance, and plan how to recover if it fails. |
For a host-led product demo and tutorial, manual switching is the straightforward documented option. YouTube’s scheduled start time is for the event, not a schedule for changing scenes inside the encoder.

Rehearse and prepare the show
YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Use that lead time to check both scenes, transitions, captured content, camera framing, and sound; then verify the Live Control Room preview and that the event is reachable. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Test every scene change and confirm that the right scene reaches the live preview.
- Check that narration is audible and that the product or tutorial material is legible.
- Verify that screen capture shows only what you intend viewers to see.
- Have the host or producer know who is responsible for each scene change.
- Use Studio Mode when you want to inspect a layout before putting it on air.
Equipment and cost considerations
Scene rotation is a production-software task; buying equipment does not provide the switching workflow. YouTube lists microphones, webcams, and headphones among typical equipment for casual streams, while more advanced setups may include multiple cameras and microphones, mixers, or hardware encoders. A USB microphone may be useful if the host needs a dedicated narration input, but it is optional and does not switch scenes. The cited guidance does not establish a specific camera, capture card, controller, lighting kit, or hardware encoder as necessary for this setup.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that stays live with uploaded videos, rather than a live host switching between camera and screen scenes, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. For the do-it-yourself scene rotation above, OBS remains the tool for switching live production scenes; StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and does not go live from a camera. Start a free StreamNeo day.
